Agreed, no doubt injuries will provide the opportunity. Not all at ounce per say but wouldn't mind seeing CEY, Cameron, Lyons get a sniff also
So in 4 weeks we could have (obviously Hendo missing):
B: Hartigan, Rutten, Jaensch
HB: Brown, Talia, Smith
C: Mackay, Dangerfield, Sloane
HF: Lynch, Jenkins, Grigg
F: Betts, Walker, Laird
1R: Jacobs, Kerridge, Douglas
Int: B Crouch, Otten, 2 of S Thompson/M Crouch/Wright.

Pods out for Walker? Turn it up.
Walker coming back will finally see Pods playing his proper role.
For mine the following 11 players when fit are the only absolute automatic selections: Sloane, Talia, Walker, Betts, Jacobs, Douglas, Lynch, Dangerfield, Smith, Henderson, B Crouch.
We shall see.In what world is Henderson an automatic inclusion? He only played 14 games last year and played the easiest position on the ground. The same position that saw Brent Reilly included in the All Australian Squad and the resurgence of Matt Jaensch this season.
Credit where credit is due - the players need to perform, but the structure of Sando's gameplan is getting the loose man out of defence a big bonus every year.
I'm actually one who wouldn't mind this as i think we can make a taller forward structure work (especially with Betts and Laird down there).
However, the Crows have lately preferred a 2 tall structure. I assume this is partly due to personnel plus we've had Danger playing tall down there. So let's say when Lynch returns we go with a 3 tall forward line given he's pretty much a flanker.
That's 1) Lynch 2) Jenkins 3) Pods.
Now if we stay will 3 tall forwards who goes for Walker. If it's Jenkins who gives Jacobs a rest?
You play all four.
I don't mind that, but my 4 talls forward would include Otten (on bench initially).
Or Otten takes a defensive post instead of Rutten or Hartigan, but without Hendo in the team and Shaw being underwhelming, I'm looking forward to Otten's return for his flexibility. Flexibility is somewhat overrated but i reckon you do need 1-2 players in a 22 who can cover eventualities. Therefore, if it's a toss up i go Otten>Pods.
We don't have that many youngsters on our list right now. Have a look at the POTY thread and note how small the list of ROTY eligible players we have - then compare that list with a similar thread from last year or the year before. When I say reward sanfl form I think we need to start getting some games into our youngsters.
Lairdy is an automatic selection cmon manPorps won't come back. VB shouldn't be an automatic inclusion.
Petrenko, Martin, Reilly the first 3 to go after that.
Pods out for Walker.
Depending on match-ups down back, Rutten may miss some games. I'd like to see a harsher line on S Thompson if he regresses also.
Hartigan, Laird, Wright are playing well but are the types that may never be automatic inclusions.
M Crouch will be an auto one day but he will need a rest at some stage. B Crouch may have built up sufficient fitness by then, though may come in earlier.
For mine the following 11 players when fit are the only absolute automatic selections: Sloane, Talia, Walker, Betts, Jacobs, Douglas, Lynch, Dangerfield, Smith, Henderson, B Crouch.
There are many others close to it atm such as Otten, Kerridge, Grigg, Jaensch, Brown, Mackay, M Crouch, Jenkins.
You play all four.
Lynch - next week for MartinWas thinking this morning "if" we remain more or less injury free (touch wood) who comes out when our other guys return? Below is our current injury list. I can see maybe Pods for Tex, Lynch for maybe Martin, VB for say Reilly but who go's out for the rest, I understand that they all will not come in at ounce. Then if they come in how do we then get games into players like CEY, Cameron, Lyons etc?
Grigg
Porps
Lynch
Otten
Crouch Snr
Hendo
VB
Tex
Not only do we not have a lot of them, but even less of them are ready to play AFL at this point in time. CEY is probably the only one close to selection - and most people watching him in the SANFL think he's a fair way off too (at least according to the match reports here on BF). That's largely a result of our lack of high draft picks in recent years - Talia & Smith are the only top-20 selections we've had in the last 5 years and it's ages since either of those have spent any time in the SANFL. Most of the other draftees taken in that time were "project" players, who were either a long way off being ready physically, or had some fairly serious flaws in their game which needed addressing. In any case, none of them (other than CEY) are currently pressing for AFL selection.
I would be more than happy to see him given a taste - and 3 games sounds about right for the year. More to be expected from him in 2015.Went down and watched the 2's.
CEY is too athletically gifted for the SANFL. He gets plenty of the ball, but his disposal by foot is very sloppy and will be a massive liability at AFL level at this stage. I understand why we haven't brought him so far considering the amount of goals we leaked from direct turnovers in the first 3 rounds.
Still - vital we get at least 3 games into him at AFL level this year. Give him a taste. He is the ideal project player. He has improved remarkably in the last 12 months. Gone from struggling in the WWT seconds to being in our best over the first 2 SANFL games. Definitely positive signs, but we have to give him a taste.
The good news is that we have now (hopefully) already drawn a line through Martin & Porps.
Excluding VB & Hendo as long-term injuries ... & limited form so far (which can change things quickly):Our "fantasy world where everyone is fit and in form at the same time" team would look like this on paper IMO:
B: Otten Rutten Laird
HB: Smith Talia Brown
C: Mackay S Thompson Sloane
HF: Lynch Walker Douglas
F: Betts Jenkins Podsiadly
R: Jacobs Dangerfield B Crouch
Int (from): Grigg, Henderson, van Berlo, Wright, Kerridge, Jaensch, M Crouch, Reilly, Petrenko, CEY, Lyons, Shaw, Hartigan
"Best 22" is such an unusual term. It's highly subjective. Both Porps and Reilly are in our best 22 if playing to their potential. Neither are old enough to write off yet, but nor do either of them seem like they're about to recapture any form.
I'm not sure that I agree that Lynch is automatically in our best 22.
From our team on the weekend, I'd suggest that Hartigan, Jaensch, Martin, Pods, Patrenko and M. Crouch are not in our best 22 (though both Hartigan and Crouch are likely to be in the next 2-3 years).
Rutten - god this one pains me. I'm starting to see vulnerability creeping into our rock. Still has a massive role to play and his ability and leadership makes it crucial to play him alongside our developing KPD's as often as we can afford. I'm not sure we afford that game in game out however if everyone is fit and raring to go. Could come a time soon (probably when Otten returns) that we need to consider Kartidgan playing Key back and Truck to have a rest. If Kardigan performs... Truck may struggle to get back and hold his spot. Rest him up, get him sprinting the weeks he doesnt play.. and have him cherry ripe just in case we make finals...
Is there anyone else in the SANFL that we could also get games into this year? Do you think Kelly, Spina, Battersby, etc. could receive a call up for a couple of games to get the taste of AFL and know the speed they will have to play at?
Loved Kelly's game on Saturday... Great disposal. His biggest issue is that Jaensch, Laird, Brown are all ahead of him for that smaller defender role. Would need 2/3 to get injured to get a call up.
afc.com have him at 189cm. I know that can often mean nothing but when I seen him play the other week he did look to have a bit of size to him. Probably more the Otten, Reilly or Henderson type.
