Selection Mystery

Wellingham won't get dropped. He is needed as a defensive midfielder.
I agree. He is a certainty and one of the reasons that Collingwood got going in the third quarter.
MaCaffer is the best chance to get dropped if one of Beams or Pendles come in. Probably even Fraser too. Would love to see Clarke come in, but I just don't see it happening.
I doubt that Pendlebury will play, but I'm sure he will next week if we win. If there is doubt over Fraser, then I don't think he will play either. I would also love to see Marty Clarke included, and the selectors may be tossing up the possibility of an extra midfielder at the expense of Goldsack, even though he played quite well. If Beams comes back in to the team, then it would be at the expense of Macaffer, even though he played well too.

Possible inclusions: (from) Marty Clarke, Dayne Beams, Josh Fraser.
Possible exclusions: Tyson Goldsack, Brent Macaffer.

Maybe, but Clarke Cook Stanley and McCarthy (and to a lesser extent, Barham) will all come into contention for a similar role. Wellingham is not past the post. He is too flashy at this stage of his career and there are a number of defensive/inside mids in the VFL in exceptional form who can easily take his spot.

At the end of the day this spot will be decided by how MM perceives the matchups.

Wellingham has many skills being defensive is generally not one of them. Runs twice as fast with the ball as he does without it. Pays no attention to opposition players in his vicinity. Runs foward of the ball to be in space while there is a contest on meaning that his opponent is free if we don't win the ball.

Interesting that to a man (or poster or woman) on here we all agree that we should not play anyone who is carrying an injury, yet that is exactly what Geelong are going to do, play "suspect" players. -----------

Yep! Took the words right out of my mouth.

We have players in our twos in career-best form. If changes are needed for specific match-ups, make use of these guys. e.g. if we need an extra tall (forward or back), why not go with Reid - provided, of course, that he is dead-set fit? From the twos' reports over the last couple of months, seems he's been consistently very good.

just saw Pendles running and kicking on TEN news

Josh and Beams both were heavily strapped

**** the side looked like they had a big spring in their step
:D

Gee Pendles moved pretty well in the vision c10 had.

yer but with Stevie J, Max Rooke and Ottens going in a bit iffy, we MUST play 22 fit and firing players

be shattering if Pendles broke down again:eek:

Yeah I wouldn't play him.

With 18 possies, you can't drop Cafe - no way! Wellingham is first cab and I would look at Beams, and if not fit then Marty. I'd like Reid for Leroy but won't happen.

Not really.

Slow, short, weak in contests, lack of skill/class and was the no.1 turnover player in the AFL for something like 2 or 3 years straight (top 3 at least).

All he had was fitness. He could run all day/night. Outisde of that, probably the most overrated player in AFL history.

And when you DO say something negative about him, EVERYONE mentions the same final against Port Adelaide where he got 40 posessions. That's it. He has ONE game to hang his hat on in a 10 plus year career.

disagree with this. Licuria was a very good footballer not just because he played well against Port in a final but because for a good portion of his career he basically tagged the oppositions best mid whilst getting 25+ disposals himself. This why everone mentions not just that game v. Port (killed Franco btw) but the fact that he won two copelands ahead of buckley which is pretty telling imo.

I also disagree with your other post. Both Macaffer and Toovey must and will play. Dropping them does not make sense at all.

Personally I have no respect for supporters like yourself who advocate the axing of players who are not aesthetically pleasing enough. The fact is that through their performance on the weekend both are deserving of their spots in the prelim.

Looking from most of the posts a lot of people here people want Wellingham and Goldsack out this week. I thought Goldsack was good all night. People are criticising Wellinghams game for frontrunning. However i felt that his 3rd quarter was excellent and he was one of the players that got us back into the match through running hard forward.

Obviously if Pendlebury is right he has to play but if not then I would not be rushing in to make many changes. Many people here want Beams to come in however his form has tapered off in the last month. Fraser is also an option but by the sounds of things he'll probably be out for at least another week. Reid is the other option however although his forms been excellent in the VFL didnt he cramp in both legs at the startt of the 3rd quarter last week? If so it makes him a a bit of a liability. Is going to be very very good next year though imo.

I'm told Pendles is still a reasonably good chance for Saturday but much will depend upon how well he pulls up after each session. Like with race horses they have to check for heat at the site and obviously his pain levels.

I'm also told by insiders that this side has a very strong self belief and there is an inner confidence not so evident in past years. This lot do believe in each other.

Pendles and Fraser won't play is my bet. Neither will Rocca.

Beames MAY come in.

Personally, knowing who's fit and what not I'd go..

In: Beames, Dawes
Out: Macaffer, Toovey

But I know Malthouse would NEVER drop Toovey since he's the new Paul Licuria for Mick. Once Bucks takes over, Toovey won't get a game.

Toovey is getting a run because he deserves it. Generally among the best players every week.

just lik dual copeland winner Licuria

Why all the lica hate?

Agree. Not sure why people would be calling for him to be dropped at this stage.

Tough week at the selection table, my one wish is that MM doesn't go with anyone who is underdone.

What does he hang on his Copelands?
