Why don't we play the big Irishman at CHF this year? I personally prefer Waite at CHB and, given the loss of Kennedy, I think we should give Setanta the keys to the forward line.

Earl Spalding was very important part of our forward structure when he played, and one of my favorite players. He was a huge man of 198cm and something like 110kg. Setanta might be a newer version for the modern game: 10kg+ lighter, a better athlete, super quick, more agile etc etc. They kick about the same!!

I know it's supposed to be the hardest position on the ground but Setanta has developed to such an extent that I can't imagine him letting us down. Play the boy at CHF!!!!!:thumbsu::thumbsu:

...

He does remind me of Earl. It took Earl a long time to become the great CHF he eventually was though.

I think Setanta's biggest problem is that CHF is more than about getting the ball and kicking goals. It's about bringing others around you into the game and setting plays up. Lance was great at this, but Setanta is still figuring out the game and it's too soon to expect that kind of generalship from him. I'd prefer to see him settle in at FB for a year.

No, the backline is a must for Setanta, and for the CFC imo.

Would be much more effective to us as a backman. We need a strong backman and he will learn his trade there this year

He just doesn't fit in our forwardline for mine, others may see it differently.

Setanta will be rotated to CHF on occasions, but I think he'll mostly be at FB or CHB in 2008. Kruezer, Hartlett and Edwards will be used as CHF options. Setanta does however have huge potential as a KP forward. The guy has serious leg speed, and a massive leap, and is virtually impossible to stop on the lead. His reading of the play in the defensive half is much more advanced than in the forward 50 at this stage. But that will change with experience. Hampson can also be used as a fast, tall leading forward. The Blues forward setup is not only extremely talented, but it has incredibility versatility. Ratten can basically adjust his forward setup to exploit the weakness of the opposition defence. For example V the Pies short non-talent defence, we'd rotate a few 200cm fast forwards through the forward line (e.g. Hampson, Kruezer), to counteract the Pies 4 V Fev blocking tactics, which should cause absolute havoc. :)

I've never really thought too much about the possibility of Setanta lining up at centre half forward.
He would be extremely difficult to man up on, considering that he is 2 metres tall and incredible agile. He seems to have taken a few decent grabs down at CHF.
I think that we should definetly give him a shot down at CHF, especially if we are going to be playing Waite at CHB, and Fisher won't be played at CHF either.
Could also be good for his development.

There's our fat- bottomed baby! Still singin' loud and proud I hope!

What's up love, been a bit quiet of late?

Hiding on the Carlton board now, because the others have grown bored of your yawnfest crappola?

Your'e beautiful on the inside Parrot, don't let them judge you! :thumbsu:

Mate, he's been swapped around from position to position over the past 3-4 years. It's about time he was given a position and allowed to stay there. Enough is enough.

Setanta started in the forward line and didn't exactly set the world on fire (yes i know he was just beginning but still...he was eventually moved to the back half). At times last year he looked lost up forward imo.

The backline has to be the place for him. We NEED a backman, especially one as strong as him.

But he's only been playing the game for 3-4 years.
Playing in the forward could help him read the play and that is a major part of playing in the forward line-getting into the right positions, which would be very hard to do when you barely know the game of AFL.
Believe me, the kid is developing, and i think that he is one of those guys who will be moved around from week to week, whether that's up forward, down back or possibly even in the ruck.

He's already had that opportunity. He's played in the forward line before. It's time for him to be allowed to knuckle down a position.

If he's used as a swing man that i honestly think it's a waste. He has way too much talent and potential to just be thrown around here there and everywhere just because we need to fill holes.

Yeah, I tend to agree. He should settle on a position in 2008. Thought he was awesome in 2007. Was played all over the place and did well. He has huge versatility, which will always be his asset. Should be used at FB or CHB mostly in 2008 while his game develops. No other team in the AFL has KP defender of his size and athleticism. :)

No LonelyGirl15, but they have KP Defenders who can actually defend. :)

I prefer Setanta as a key defender. CHF is a difficult position to play, and requires a lot of footy smarts, which isn't exactly Setanta's strong point. If he were to play forward, I'd like him deeper but I don't really see a spot for him up forward and feel that he's better suited to defense. I agree with BD - keep him down back and let him grow into that role. Looking at our list, we've got most of the holes plugged up and hopefully we'll be able to leave guys like Waite, Setanta and Walker in the one position and let them settle, without having to throw them all over the ground.

Who let the filth in?

Discussion of any player with talent like Setanta, tends to pang Pies supporters list insecurity nerve. They have been, and always will be a one-flag-per-50-year success-less mess of a Club. Deep down they know it. Collingwood's failures and trademark excuses are just good for football. And good for a laugh. :)

It's a good point you make about CHF's needing to bring others into the game and Setanta probably lacks the game-reading ability and poise to do this at present.

I'm glad he reminds someone else of Earl though, I thought it was just me...
