Setanta to GWS

The guy has a new club and a new career.

I think he can have his own thread.

Setanta, thanks for some Herculean efforts in tough times. Between his successful stints in the backline and as a forward, his efforts and passion for the contest can not be denied.

I hope he creates waves in GWS and finishes his career with class.

Great news for Irish...and I hope he finds a great new home at GWS!

Always liked the bloke and loved the way he preformed for us while at the club...would honestly still like him here.

Go get em Irish!

Very happy for the big Tant. Think he has a lot to offer, not least of which showing his young team mates how to knock out a 6'6" bloke with one punch.

Bit bummed we got nothing for him given all the compo picks flying around for the other GWS recruits. Such is life.

Wonderful news for Setanta, and not a surprise to me at all, to be honest.

I understand we had to do it in the end, but I'm still disappointed we got rid of him. Far from our worst performed player & was still able to contribute significantly.

I've had the pleasure of meeting the big Irishman and he is a great guy - very passionate about what he does, and that is clear for all to see. He's not done by a long shot and whilst he's nowhere near a star, he's a solid footballer who is a great option for GWS.

Should play plenty of senior games for them next season. Will probably lead their goalkicking, too.

Excellent. That's the best news to come out of this trade/draft period so far. Setanta has a lot to offer and it was a very line ball decision for us to let him go. Have massive respect for his attitude, especially since leaving. No dummy spitting, just copped the blow on the chin and got on with it. That was noticed.

In a way GWS could be excellent for him. Despite his age, he's still quite underdeveloped as a footballer because of his late start. So a Club in the early stage of it's development would be a better match. At Carlton the competition for spots is just too fierce for a player of his age and level of development.

I'm surprised that other teams didn't pick him up, especially Richmond and Essendon. Setanta would be a much better option that Maric or Brad Miller. And Setanta would definitely help Essendon lack of KP forward depth. Well done GWS. They made several other clubs look a bit silly.

:)

Good luck to him and I am sure he will play some good footy for GWS.

Lets hope he doesn't use his Irish influence on Zac Touhy try to get him to GWS ala the swans, tadgh kennelly and Tommy Walsh.

Would it really be silly for The Bulldogs to take him at #57, or even Sydney at #61?
Still think he'd be a better fit for either of those teams than he'd be at GWS.

GWS are obviously short on talls and he's a good one to protect the younger players.

He will offer a little support without stifling the development of their prime prospects.

It's a good fit IMO.

I'm amazed that other teams are letting him slip to GWS. There's heaps of teams where he'd be very useful as a 2nd tall forward. He's actually a hard forward to combat because of his height, athleticism and ground level ability. 10x better than someone like Brad Miller for example. He's not going to last until the PSD. Wouldn't be surprised if another Club makes a bid tonight.

:)

Good on him- impossible not to love the big guy. You know Setantrum's well regarded when even Carlton supporters are supportive of him going to another club (and no, it doesnt make a difference that he was cut- we seem to attack any former players who go on to do well at other clubs after being pushed out)

Almost got us over the line against West Coast and will divert attention away from Patton when they line up next to one another next year. Sheeds loves a goer, and he's certainly that.

Will be playing AFL well after Bower has been delisted.

Fantastic news for the big bloke. I won't even begrudge him kicking a few goals against us. Will follow GWS with more interest than I otherwise would have as long as he is in the team.

Good on Tants... he didnt deserve to be cut by us. He is a much better forward than a lot of people suspect and had his development stifled by his trying being to be turned into a defender.

If he had been allowed to develop naturally as a forward then I suspect that he would have been at the club still.
