Has Setanta got a big future at Carlton, could he be as good as kennelly if not better, like to hear everyones thoughts?

Has a good build and athleticism from what I've seen.

His game on Brown was a bit overrated though I have to say, he looked pretty good, but he had PLENTY of help from teammates.

Fair enough, but If thats all that Brown did every time we played Bribane then I would be more than happy. Doubtfull though.

Brown did not dominate the game to what he is capable of and Sentata made plenty of spoils, yes he did have alot of help as you would expect but there were a couple of one-on-ones where he was able to get the ball to ground or out of play. I think he will be one of the best back man in the league soon enough there ain't many backman with his height and athleticism

He could be an All-Australian.

How good is it when he spoils the ball 20 metres and then he celebrates?

I love his reactions, if there is a free kick given away he goes off, if he does something good he celebrates like he just kicked a goal.

Could be anything.

i like it better when he runs with the ball :D

I doubt I have seen a more determined player. Looks like anything less than perfect is not good enough for our Guinness Drinking Irish Freind....Prototype full back for 2007 and beyond

I dont think Setanta touches alcohol.

Aisake niether.

Anyway, just wanted to get across how bloody annoying it is when the commentators and co can't actually say his name. It's not that hard! Se-tan-ta O-hail-pin. Easy.

Honestly, they're meant to be professionals, you'd think they'd at least rehearse a guy's name before calling him all kinds of random stuff during the game.

Santanta, Oalpin, Setarrrnta... grrr

I was impressed with his game on Brown.

His courage impressed me most. When he was near the goal line with Brown running towards him he didn't flinch and kept his eye on the ball. Not an easy thing to do.

With the new in the back rules having a defender of his size will be invaluable. His combination of size, reach and athleticism will make him a great spoiling defender.

That is an excellent point. Most of his spoils were done with zero contact on Brown, because he just used his height and leap advantage to effect the spoil. Some of his punches were going 20-30m. It was spectacular stuff. How good would Setanta be in the ruck BTW. He's a lot taller than Ackland and Cloke and with his monster leap he could take on lumbering rucks like Cox and Sandilands.. Best keep him in defense at this stage though. while he learns the game, but this guy could play anywhere. :)

Yep, he's turning into a great FB. Things to like:
  1. His enthusiasm
  2. Backs himself with his pace and athleticism
  3. Has claimed some very prominent scalps: Hall, Lloyd, Grant, Brown (IMO), Roughead (O.k. Not really prominent), Thompson (with both knees working)
  4. Loads of upside as he is still learning the game
Once he learns the subtleties of body positioning he will rarely be beaten.

i think it takes a bit of courage to play that crazy game with sticks he use to play in ireland.

Just wanted to say I agree, the guy looks like a potentially great player. I think you may be underestimating Browns performance, although he wasn't as dominant as he will be with abit of match fitness. But as far as setanta goes I thought it was great to see how he celebrated after winning a contest, really shows raw effort rather than wanting the cool image. BTW well done on winning the cup.

He s a good bloke and if his development continues the way it has been there is no reason why he cant be a 10 yr player for us

yeah i'd loe it if he stayed on a few more years, but as enthusiastic as he is, it still feels like there's something missing from his game. i dunno if he's lacking confidence - he played a pretty good game against brown. i cant quite put my finger on it... maybe he still needs a bit more kicking practice or something?

 Get real. Setanta has played 13 games in his life and goes up against one of the best big forwards in the last 20 years. I don't care whether it was Brown's first game in months, he is still a very dangerous player and if not handled properly can tear a game apart. Setanta was very nervous in the first half and had a lot of help. After half time Brown started to move arround a bit and it became a lot more one on one. Setanta handled the situation very well. You will note that he did not give one free away for hands in the back and was very effective at spoiling very late. Give him another 20 games at full back and then watch a fit and inform Setanta and fit and inform J Brown go at each other. It will be a beauty.

Setanta will be a gun! If I were you I would be more worried about Merrit who, even with the help of other players was not able to contain Fev. You watch Carlton's back 6 grow together over this year and tell me who are going to achieve the same for Brisbane.:) :)

He's definitely got a future. His size and athleticism, as well as spoling ability allows him to match it against the bigger forwards, which is something we desperately needed given Thornton's relative lack of size. His attacking side is weak, but its improving and his main job is to defend, which he does well.

Too right. In the VFL semi last year he went into the ruck after half time and looked completely lost at center bounces in the beginning. By the end of the game he was doing very well though, IMO anyway. Got me thinking that at his height, with our lack of rucking options he should be tried out in that position at senior level.

But things change. So far our rucks haven't been pathetic like last year and he seems to have found a niche at FB. I'll stick with the saying, If it ain't broke.............

His brother is just that little bit taller, more athletic (if you can believe it) and learning the game faster, but is a year behind.
Leave Setanta where he is and let the opposition deal with two of them:thumbsu:

I was watching that as well. His leaps were completely mis-timed for about 10 minutes or so, then all of a sudden he got it right, and started jumping over the opposing ruck and thumping it 10-20m. Certainly has potential, but we have assigned Hampson, Jacobs and Aisake for that role I guess. :)

Setanta was never going to beat Brown one out, but then again, not too many can. Thought his spoling was a feature, and surely this game can not only give him a lot more confidence, but also what he would have learnt playing on Brown would have been invaluable.

I just like his attributes that is suited to Full Back...

line him up against any player in the AFL who is 102kgs and 199cms...and is quicker than him...

all he has to do is spoil, punch the thing and not get thrown around like poor T-Bird did...Thornton must be lovin it
