Background:
From being one time trade bait at the end of 2009 to consolidating his position as a strong midfielder in 2010, Wellingham has slowly but surely carved himself out a permanent niche in the Collingwood midfield. 2010 was a great foundation for his career. A pacy no frills mid, his looks belied his appetite for the footy and hardness around the contest. He was more than handy as a tagger and he possessed a definite "nose" for a goal. His consistency was rewarded with 24 games and a Premiership medal. Sharrod gave supporters much to enthuse about for 2011 and improvement was expected across the board.
2011
Sharrod was one who needed watching around goals as he had great ability to 'shark' the footy at great pace and convert. He could be a little "nervy" from the set shot but he had the ability to run all day and excelled in tackling which made him rarely beaten in one on one contests.
Unfortunately, Sharrod was not able to take 'the next step' in 2011. It is unclear whether it was the burden of expectation or a lack of opportunities but his year was frustratingly punctuated by periods of inconsistency, especially as the season wore on. Injury niggles (groin) late in the year saw him miss vital games leading into the finals; he was only able to play two of six games from Round 17 prior to the Eagles Final.
Notable Games in 2011:
This is not to say that Sharrod did not show the faithful what he was capable of in 2011. The game in Round 12 against Melbourne was one right out of the box. With the Pies missing such luminaries as Swan and Thomas, Sharrod was able to return career high numbers and a best on ground performance when he reaped in 20 kicks, 17 handballs, 9 clearances and 12 inside 50s.
Then in the first Qualifying Final against West Coast, Sharrod amassed a more than handy 21 touches. More importantly, he booted 3 majors playing a dominant role in the Pies win over the Eagles. The Eagles had taken control of the game early but in the second half Wellas was able to kick one of his trade mark goals (3 for the half) when sharking from a ruck contest on the run. This proved to be key in giving the boys impetus going into half time as Collingwood piled on 6 goals to 3 in the following quarter.
Sharrod also had very strong back to back games in Rounds 5 and 6 against Essendon and Western Bulldogs. Unfortunately, he was not able to carry on the momentum of his strong performance into the Qualifying Final against Hawthorn or into the Grand Final. Further improvement was needed by Sharrod in going forward.
2012
We are looking to a stronger return by 'Wellas' in 2012. We all know what he is capable of and hopefully an injury free year coupled with consistency of output will be achieved in season 2012. If this happens, Sharrod is capable of a Top 10 finish in the Copeland.
