Making excuses about "outs" is selling your team short.

Claiming that the Hawks were "flat" is as well.:thumbsd:

The Hawks were on tonight and we were beaten by a better team. But after watching that game I feel very good about the remainder of the season. We mixed it with one of the best and had a few things been a little different we might have won.

We didnt get smashed in the middle - We had 9 more clearances,3 less hitouts and 8 more tackles than the Hawks. The game was lost at converting for goal which what matters in the end.

I agree. YOU guys smashed US out of the middle up until the second half of the 3rd and whole of the 4th quarter.

The reason you got so many points was three fold -

-Reids inexperience and kicking for goal (particularly the shot from the pocket when he had fraser open at the 50m mark)

-Blasing away in front of goal, because of hawk pressure on the loose ball.

-Rushed behinds.

I thought collingwood were good tonight and dominated the ruck and centre clearances for most of the game. It was a cracker.

yea so why are some hawk fans thinking that williams would make more of a impact than those players

Hawk fans? YOU brought those players up. I was making the point to those pies fans cryin about Rocca being the difference that you werent the only team playing tonight that was missing a key forward.

how accurate were the hawks tho, excluding roughhead and rushed behinds they scored 1 behind for the night

An immensely frustrating game, first and foremost because even with all the players we had out, we probably should have won.

The Good
Martin Clarke - leading the team goalkicking in his second game, this kid is a gem.

Shannon Cox - very impressed with his game tonight, looked composed, good disposal, good body strength for a kid of such few games.

Tyson Goldsack - did a good job on Buddy despite conceding a few inches. It was a tough matchup for him and he made a decent fist of it.

Dane Swan - BOG in my book.

Tarkyn Lockyer - still AA IMHO. Another great game.

Ben Reid - showed enough for Pies fans to be excited about. Has a bit to learn, and obviously a bit nervous with his kicking, but has a great presence and he's the youngest player in the AFL.

The Bad
Kicking for goal - was again terrible. Without having the final stats, we had about 6 more scoring shots and lost. Hawthorn were far more accurate and made the most of their opportunities.

Leon Davis - tried to do too much tonight. Snapped a shot out on the full, straight over the head of a wide-open Medhurst. Nothing went right for him.

The Ugly
Guy Richards - is a netball player. I commented to a friend that he should be there for the centre bounce and then benched immediately, because that's all he offers us. Is softer than Lonie. I cringe every time he goes near the ball.

Paul Medhurst - kicked the set shots beautifully, but had some abominable brain-fades. When he played on between two Hawks to kick a wobbly behind, instead of taking a shot from 45m, I wanted to slap him. Of course it resulted in yet another 11-point turnaround. Talented, but dumb.

Our tackling - took several steps backward tonight, to what it was two years ago. Nearly every Hawk that was tackled slipped it, or kept the arms free to fire off an effective handball. We had no offensive pressure aside from Dale Thomas' efforts, the Hawks streamed out of our forwardline with ease. The polar opposite of the pressure we applied for the Sydney game. Very disappointing.

Kicked straight we would have won tonight by 3-4 goals!!!

When i see how many young first year players out there doing well and considering these blokes where out.

_________
Rocca
Buckley
Clement
Shaw
Presti
Obrien
Lonie

We didnt do too bad.

Davis was good tonight. Yes he missed a few targets and snapped out on the full but he is one of our most skillful and creative players. He kicked a number of pinpoint passes that created opportunities that other, lesser players wouldn't have had the skills to pull off. I thought he was one of our best tonight.

Firstly don't blame the loss on your innacurate kicking. Part of being a good forward is having a good set shot, and Cloke doesn't have that so you have to expect him to miss his fair share each game. Whereas we have forwards like Boyle who take their chances.

Secondly we rushed at least four behinds from memory so that made your point tally look a little lopsided.

I was very impressed with Collingwood though having said that, they were a very difficult side to beat (all the more impressive given your exclusions)and set up in much the same way Hawthorn do.

Don't blame it, even though it was one reason we lost? I'm sorry, just because historically one or more players have kicked badly, doesn't mean you just accept that flaw in their makeup and ignore the difference it makes to the outcome of the game!:confused:

Were we watching the same game??

I thought Leon was very good, Medhurst did some good things, including an excellent tackle. Both sides ran hard, one kicked straighter.

I thought Reid did exactly what he would have done. Taken a couple of marks and sprayed the kicks. Hawthorn looked flat and stood up in the last quarter when needed. I was really impressed with Collingwood, a very disciplined and well coached side.

No he didn't. Did he take a contested mark? Because Rocca is the #1 contested mark in the lead by about 10 contested marks. And when he doesn't mark he does his best job to make sure the ball falls to our crumbers. You guys were very good at clogging up our space and pushing men behind the play, Rocca would've went for marks and taken some or at least made a contest when you wouldn't expect him too.

I know Reid is quick, but at this stage at least Rocca is also more effective at applying defensive pressure.

I thought the boys really fought it out well tonight and i think we finally have the depth to match it with everyone in the comp. Our running game is just as good as anyone's, however only queries i have is our inaccuracy and failure to put oppositions away AND 2 distinct efforts that i still cannot get over:

1. Heath Shaw not going hard enough at Luke Hodge in a 2 on 1 situation (our favour) allowing hodge to mark on the fwd 50 in last quarter. Although he didnt kick the goal it was unlike Heater to spectate.

2. (This one hurt most) shaw again, this time after we rallied and hit the lead he just sat back and watched osborne of all players take a mark he should not have taken to put them back in front. Heater relied on maxy running back with the flight of the ball to spoil for him, (maxy didnt even get there) whilst heater didnt even have body on body pressure on osborne. Had he made body positioning heater would have beaten him convinvingly, however it was strange to see Heater just sit back and not attack the ball or player. This incident right here was the knockout blow.

way too many handball turnovers.. demoralising stuff i reckon..

Yeah that really pissed me off. We are the #16 handballing team I think. How Hawthorn chip around and flood, we couldn't kick to contests. We kick it long and to a contest and back ourselves to win that contest. The way Hawthorn play we have to pretty much beat them at their own game and hanball way more than we were used to.

That's true not many of our misses were set shots or that easy.

15.5 is fantastic goal kicking though, and while we have had poorer displays of goalkicking, I think this is the game where can pretty much say it did cost us.

Hawk fans? YOU brought those players up. I was making the point to those pies fans cryin about Rocca being the difference that you werent the only team playing tonight that was missing a key forward.

Ok let me straighten this up.

We were the only team out there missing 3 defenders (2 mediums who can play on any size and one tall defender), 1 key forward who leads the league in contested marks, a quick wingman/back flanker and a brownlow medalist.

How do you like them apples? ;)

Agree to disagree. I thought Davis did some good things, but also butchered the ball. Medhurst was mostly terrible, but kicked some nice goals from set shots.

T.Cloke on S.Fisher.. then who do you have?? Attard will play on Didak.

Our midfield is much better than you.. and will be the difference

Our midfield is still very average and we matched it with Hawthorn tonight. We have beaten other teams in the midfield before, not much footy is played on paper.

Collingwood played very well tonight. You guys beat us in most areas and we were lucky to win the game. 27 scoring shots to 20 shows the opportunities were there.

I love the way your younger players are playing. A lot of depth in the Maggies side. I was very impressed with the tenacity and the players supporting each other. You will be a force in September action and I'm hoping we don't meet you guys in finals action.

Chances have to be taken! They didn't take them chances! Missing players or not, we should've won that without them had we kicked the damn thing striaght!

Well done Pies!! Super game under great pressure. We certainly deserved to win but our own errors cost us. I was just happy to see the young blokes contest so well. We will be re-thinking our best 22 in a few weeks time Clarke, Goldsack & Cox are all in our best 22, going to have to be a few hard decisions when Presti, Clemen, Harry & Shaw return. Not to mention Rocca. Can we even fit in Lonie now?

Thought Hawthorn would blow us out of the water but I think they look like they will be tested when under pressure against a side that could finish off. All the same they are are a very talented outfit. However I feel come finals time we will enjoy that finals pressure with a few handy blokes to come back & improve that finishing, they will crack in finals but experience is all they will be looking for going into 2008 looking good as will we.

Excellent game it was.

My aunty commented on how she has never seen a team rush so many behinds before.

The only thing that I thought was disgraceful was the non decision on the Mitchell out of bounds incident which resulted in the Osbourne goal and regaining the lead.

But we shouldnt base the loss on anything, it was just that Hawks knew how to convert, and we didnt. Boyle is stupendous at kicking for goal, he should give Trav a lesson (although I didnt think Trav kicked that badly tonight)

Is it me or are the younger players (Shaw, Clarke, Swan, Cox, Maxwell etc.) actually keeping us in the game?
Players like licca, holland and obree are holding us back, they have been great servants of the club but their time has sadly passed and as for Richards well I dont have anything polite to say so best say nought!!
