I was having this discussion with a terrible one eyed saint :D

And i had little hope of convincing him that Heath Shaw is the better, more accomplished player.

I would rate Heath very high when he is playing to potential and handling the tag, not to mention the simple fact that Heater is also younger and will take his game to another level once he stops hitting the piss every weekend, he has now had a full preseason and has been playing finals since he was 18.

What has Goddard ever done other than show a small glimpse of being worthy of his high pick.

Heath has dominated games of football and been tagged from a backflank. Sure he has struggled to shake the tag but like i said he is 21-22 and has 2 more years to hit peak.

Why would anyone want Goddard over Shaw, the knee on Goddard makes it even more easy for me to conclude Heath Shaw as the far far superiour player now and into the future.

So i ask you, what player and why out of the 2 above.

Thanks :thumbsu:

Sorry, but Goddard kicks the shit out of Heath Shaw. Kicking skills are some of the best in the AFL, and he gets contested ball. Plus he can work in the midfield and HFF.

Heater is a very good player though.

Two excellent players, but I would take Goddard, his disposal skills are top 1% in the AFL and he's more versatile. This is taking nothing away from Heater, who is an excellent player.

Goddard, because he's a much better player, pure and simple.

Shaw provides a lot of drive, but he's a shithouse defender.

If i had a choice between the two at the Hawks, i would take Goddard.

And you provide the wrong reasons. Shaw's a better defender than Goddard.

Id go Goddard cos he can play midfield and has a more damaging kick.

Goddard is one of the few excellent long kicks in the league along with the likes of Dew, Hodge, Hurn & Gilbee - when these guys link up and kick 60m with precision it seriously hurts the opposition and they only need 6-10 kicks per game to really hurt the opposition. Look at Hurn, 5th or 6th in the rising star playing back pocket and getting 10 or 11 disposals a game in 2007.

Goddard is 6'3, versatile, footy smarts through the roof and is now starting to play occasional onball roles - Heater is a good back flanker that made rapid improvement early in his career but is hardly what I would call a quality player - could make a case for Goddard making the top 50 in the AFL, same IMO can't be said for Shaw.

I would put Shaw in the same category as Guerra or Birchall - nice kicks and important to team structure but hardly marquee players.

At this stage Goddard is the better player, but as you said he is still young and when he can nadle a tag he could be more damaging.

Goddard is a damaging, versatile player who is important to St Kilda

ATM i'd pick Goddard but in a few years possibly Shaw

I wrote this in another thread ranking the Saints for 2009

1 Riewoldt, Nick Best player, needs more goals
2 Goddard, Brendon Should challenge Riewoldt, versatility an asset and a hindrance

Fast, 190-191cm, and weighing around 90-92 kilos pretty much is my benchmark for the perfect utility AFL player.

Goddard has it all, an engine to play on ball, height, speed and an imposing physical presence.

Next best thing to a Pavlich or Brown playing an onball role.

Goddard is already a star...b4 he did his knee he was showing why he went #1...that knee injury was at the worst possible time in his development but he bounced back from it well last yr.

His boot is a weapon that still hasnt been used to full effect...and he can play virtually any position on the ground.

No contest.
