Was just scrolling through some of the blogs on The Age's website after the socceroo game and found this interesting post. Had a bit of a giggle.

After the 2004 performance of too many top heavy/slow players a mate and I decided that we need to load the team up with fast running mobile types and we would knock off the irish.

I would assume everyone was thinking the same thing.

I was listening to David Schwarz the other night on SEN and they were responding to a caller who felt Sheedy had escaped a lot of crticism because of the World Cup hype- the Ox then mentioned Sheedy believed at the start of the year that this was the best depth he had seen at Essendon in 26 years. If this is true, goes some way to explaining our current predicament.
 
That isn't what Sheedy said at all. Ox might want to clear things up a little.

He said it was the first time since 2000/2001 we had some depth on our list and in particular in the midfield.

When you consider that with all hands on deck, blokes like Bolton, Peverill, Cole, Winderlich, Dyson, Ryder etc aren't in our best 22, he was right.

Mate, how about the rubbish that came out about our draw ?!? I started a thread on the main board about having this "magnificent draw" I was wondering where our magnificent team was that could take advantage of this magnificent draw. I had us down for 12th, which, while being wrong, has been much closer than some experts who had us top 4/final 8
How about the ridiculous "good bloke policy" I have never heard a bigger load of **** in my football following life. Then again, with sheedy, I have become immuned to ridiculous statements.

With all hands on deck minus Lloyd, we are a dismal 16; that's where the assessment of our list by the coaches, and how good it was going to perform in 2006 is unacceptable.

There is no doubt that we've been hit by a few injuries, however I think that the injuries have been overstated.

In terms of key players only the following have missed a substantial number of matches:

Campo, Hird, Rioli, Rama, Lloyd, and I guess Laycock...

Compare that to the 17 players currently missing from the lions, including:

Brown, Michael, Keating, McGrath, Drummund, Lappin, leppa, Johnson, Scott

or Bulldogs:

Darcy, Murphy, Hahn, Wash, Morgan,Gia, Birss

or even Adelaide:

Burton, Hart, Perrie, Hudson, Gibson, etc


Our real problem has been the lack of form on the part of MJ, JJ, McPhee, Solomon and to a degree Welsh, Lucas, Lovett.

Its worrying that the sides that were putting on the park this season aren't going to be a heap different to the side that runs on to the park next season (besides the in of Lloyd). I hope that putting some games into the young players this season is going to pay off, because if there isn't significant improvement, then we could be in trouble....

Well I hope they can get back their form. I guess when we were getting close at the start of the season, it wasn't because of the snr players, it was more because of the young players playing well.

Which is a good sign, perhaps these guys have lost confidence over the last few weeks leading to the big slump in form of late...

I guess its easy to forget the positives from the start of the season in the gloom of the last few weeks.... If the young guys could play like they did at the start of the season, the snr players regain their form and we get some luck with injuries, next season could be a good one.....

We've also had injuries to depth players.

No doubt our list isn't fantastic. It's better than 16th with all hands on deck, North have won one more game and haven't had an injury. Carlton have had a few, but have for the most part kept their best players on the paddock. Not that we should be comparing ourselves to those sides, that isn't where we want to be. We have a significant amount of work to do.

It's hard to have a deep list in terms of depth, because if you are doing that, you aren't developing enough kids. We could have kept Haynes, Alvey, Bullen and Thomas on the list, they would have been better depth players. However they weren't going to develop into quality footballers. So instead we drafted 9 kids.

That automatically weakens your depth. But when you work out your best 22, and you have Bolton, Peverill, Cole, Henneman, Heffernan, Winderlich, Nash and the like, you do have depth to cover 2-4 injuries somewhat (you can't ever cover Lloyd). And you then also have a host of kids developing underneath.

We had that in 2000. Robran, Denham, Prior and the like were outside our best 22 and none of those were fanastic AFL footballers at the time (Denham was past his best), but they did provide us with handy depth if 3 or 4 were out. And that is what Sheedy's comment was, we have some depth on our list for the first time since 2000.

But when you have 5-6 out of your best side, 5 or so more out of form, and then injuries to your developed depth players, it all compounds and you end up where we are now.

The positive in all of it is, kids are getting more games. Several of them are improving. We are going to get a look at Andrew Lee tomorrow night, possibly even Jolley as well. We'll see Longergan soon as well and hopefully they can become the depth players for 2007 that we need. And we might even get the best kid in Australia.

VERY GOOD POINT!! You only need to look at the DOGS 04/05 to see how this patient development has paid dividends. Some more quality draft picks this year will no doubt add to our nursery and fingers crossed by 09/10, we'll be challenging for a flag once again..(if our rate of every 7 years, give our take, we challenge for the flag is anything to go by...)
 
Faith , my good friends. Watch and you shall be rewarded. Of this I have no doubt. Silly bugger and always have been, but faith in the Red @ Black will remain.
 
Sheedy is getting serious now. He is putting senior players on notice! Havent we heard this before? No doubts Sheedy overestimated our list at the start of the year and I think erred with Campo and Cole. What really hurt us is our draft crops of 2000 - 2002 have mostly withered and died. Also besides Stanton we dont have a draftee who is anywhere near an A rated player and he wont be until he improves his kicking technique and hits targets consistently.
