Sheedy to meet with Demons

Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy will talk with Melbourne about the possibility of coaching them next season.

Sheedy said his discussion with Demons officials would be as much about determining whether he wanted to coach them, as to convince them that he was the best person for the job.

"I think the issue with a person like myself is to find out whether you want to coach other clubs,'' Sheedy, in the last of 27 seasons with the Bombers, said today.

"That's the decision I like to look at and if there's a club out there that I would really like to coach then I will go after that job."

He said it was impossible to say how interested he was in the Melbourne job before meeting the club's officials.

Sheedy also said he wants to be remembered for giving the club stability during his 27-year tenure at Windy Hill.

As the club was dealing with a potential backlash from members for its controversial decision not to offer the veteran coach a new contract, Sheedy again thanked the club for trusting him over close to three decades.

"All I know is that I don't think I've ever created instability to this club. I've tried to actually give it stability. Is that fair enough?" Sheedy said.

"For a club to trust you for 27 years, I'm very proud of that. I think it's very important that I say that to all the fans."

On the same day three-time premiership captain Michael Voss ruled out coaching an AFL club in 2008, Sheedy confirmed he would meet with the Demons.

Sheedy also confirmed Essendon president Ray Horsburgh had given him the freedom to be interviewed by other clubs before the end of the season. The Bombers remain in finals contention with a 9-8 record.

Yesterday, as a means of appeasing some of the anger among Essendon fans after Sheedy was sacked by the Bombers, Sheedy issued a statement on the club's website.

"I have heard some members suggest they want to cut up their membership and will stop supporting the club but I sincerely hope that is not the case," Sheedy said.

"I appreciate their support but together we have worked hard to make this a great club and I hope all Essendon fans remain faithful to the club."

I thought you'd be all over this. I reckon Sheeds would be awesome for Melbourne, but it would just kill me! Imagine if you guys played us in a GF again!!!

I would kill to have him at the club coaching.
It would be huge. Aside from a very good coach, he's a marketing machine.

Sheedy can put Melbourne back on the map. Let's face it, the Dees have not been a big club since the '60's. Sheedy could do it for you - but only if you win games with him as coach.

Just because he's a marketing machine won't mean anything if you don't win games. Essendon won many Flags.

Obviously the Melbourne supporters with half a brain (Me and the majority) wouldn't expect us to become a big club without winning flags, but winning flags + Kevin Sheedy = Melbourne becomes a power in the AFL again, on and off the field.

I'm rooting for Sheeds big time. He is a marketing machine, and can still coach - I don't care how old he is.

This would be ****ing awesome.

i would love a bit of sheedy at melbourne would be the one melbourne would exactly want

As soon as Sheedy became available, he was the one I wanted to coach us.

He knows exactly what it takes to win a premiership, no beating around the bush with Sheeds.

Plus his media conferences produce some great one liners :thumbsu::D

Apparently if Sheeds is coaching next year he'd LOVE to have Voss on board with him.

Hmmm....Is it possible we could acquire the two most popular candidates available? Things looking good kiddies...

Hope so. Heffernan actually looked like a footballer when sheeds coached him, you'd think he would be able to get the best out of Johnstone, bruce etc. Having him with Voss assistant would be awesome, but chances arent great

I had the same reaction. He is the perfect fit for Melbourne from every angle. He knows how to build a winning team and for a club that needs profile to attract the sponsors, there is no bigger profile than Kevin Sheedy in the AFL today. Back him up with Voss and McKenna and I'd be rapt.

It would be very interesting if Neale Daniher was the coach of the Bombers if that were too happen.

Trade teams and coach their old clubs for the game lol.:p

if the dees manage to get sheeds on board then im the 1st to line up 4 a new membership i think he will be the perfect fit 4 us

I was hesitant at first about Sheedy but after reading Mike Sheenan's article accusing Melbourne of being bland and boring ( a fair point this season), Sheedy would be the perfect fit.

If he was to coach

Davey=super star
McLean= the next hird lol

Slander, I've heard we willspend whatever is necessary to get the man we want.

I am all for Sheedy at Melbourne. I agree with the Bombers decision, as I genuinely think his time was up there, and looking at their list, I don't think there is a terrific future ahead. So it was definately time to bring in a new face who can rejuvinate their list.

As for Sheedy at Melbourne, I think it will be a great challenge for him personally as he is dealing with a list full of potential, but lacking leadership. He seems like the man who can turn that around. Off the field, we've also taken a beating with our crowd numbers and club profile, so who better to resurrect that than Sheedy.

I think the main thing is that Sheedy demands respect. From his players, his the club, from his assistants, from opposition clubs, from the league, from the fans, from the sponsors, etc... Melbourne definately needs to win respect back from the football community.

All this talk of Sheedy has me little concerned. Granted, off-field he will do wonders for the club, but on-field Im not so sure. We have spots to fill in our squad and Sheedys previous methods has been to trade, but if you look at the last few years his win/loss ratio in that field hasnt been that great. On one hand you have: Zantuck, Heffernan, Justin Murphy, Campo and on the other hand, well Michael and off the top of my head that seems to be about it for the positives. True, most of them were in the pre-seaon draft, but guys like this shouldnt be taking the spot of a kid you can develop for a third of the wage. He also has this rep for sticking with nothing players, Henneman, Bolton, Bradley, Johns all who have matured into nothing, we have enough Millers.

If that Australian article is anything to go by http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story...5012432,00.html, is it worth spending all that money on a coach only to suffer in other areas, i.e. medical, development, recruitment

Im still to be convinced he is the best choice to get us to a flag, but Im willing to be :)

Im all for Sheedy coaching another AFL club, just not at my club Collingwood. As a Collingwood supporter I think Sheeds work has been great in recent years. :)
