SHEEDY: ROOKIE TO BE ELEVATED
Wednesday, 9 July 2003
Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy indicated at training this afternoon that the match committee would elevate one of the six rookies onto the senior list. "We have selection tonight - two things will happen. We need to bring a player off the rookie list, so we will bring up a couple of the rookie players into the meeting and ask why they think they should be elevated onto the senior list. Jordan Bannister is out for eight weeks with a busted collarbone, so there is a spot available. The other thing that will happen tonight is selection and we will probably make two changes - I doubt if it will be three," Sheedy said.
Sheedy didn't hint at the likely players to come into the side but did indicate that Jobe Watson is not in the mix. "Jobe won't play in the firsts this week. He got an injury in the game against Geelong - his groin got sore, so he has been a bit unlucky," Sheedy said. The Bomber coach also said that he was relieved the foot injury to mid-fielder Joe Misiti is not as bad as originally predicted. "Luckily for Joe he hasn't got a broken foot. At the time of the game it looked like he would be out for six to eight weeks. Luckily for him and the team he might only miss 1 -2 weeks - so that was good news."
Essendon haven't beaten the Crows in Adelaide since 1999 and Sheedy said he is expecting a tough encounter. "The Crows midfield has been probably in the best three in the AFL. They have been better than us in the mid-field over the past couple of years. We are rebuilding in that area of our team and we are trying to get our balance right." The Bombers will take winning form and confidence from its last two encounters. "We will play better than what we have over the past two weeks. The players have a few games under their belts together. By that I mean James Hird, Adam Ramanauskas and Dustin Fletcher and a couple of the younger players we have brought into the side. They have played a couple of games together since the break so it will be good for us," Sheedy said.
Sheedy again reinforced the match is like a mini final for the team and said if they can get the four points it gives the team a good opportunity to finish in the top eight. The last time Essendon played at AAMI Stadium was the 2002 first semi final against Port Adelaide. An injury depleted Bombers went down by 24-points and the loss ended the team’s season. "We played pretty well in the final at Adelaide last year and we are a better side now than what we were last year in the finals," the four time premiership coach said.
Wayne Carey has enjoyed a return to form in recent weeks for the Crows and Sheedy said the former Kangaroo's captain is still capable of winning the game off his own boot. "He (Carey) has just been such a superstar over the years and he adds that potential winning weapon for them. He is still a force. Having a year off he is probably just done his pre-season and he is going into a short season now - that is what I would be thinking if I was Wayne Carey."
He is a danger because he has capabilities of winning the game and bringing other players into the game, which is what he is doing over there. We have to be careful though because if you are worrying about Carey then you are not worrying about others and that is when others get you," Sheedy said.

So, any idea who it would be?
