Would people like to see Kevin Sheedy employed at Brisbane next year in some capacity? Voss or no Voss, could he be employed as director of coaching, Coach, assistant coach or another role, to help instill those bare minimums when it comes to effort and and being competitive?

anyone care to tell me why?, I'm not sitting here saying we should go and do it tomorrow, he obviously wouldn't take care of most of the on field stuff, but he is a good footy person, marketing, motivation, operation and setting bare minimums are his strength, something we have not managed to do for a decade now. I could picture him in a role similar to blight at goldcoast at a club next year, whether it's lions or not, his proven at GWS he can Still offer something. It would proberly only be possible post voss.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying I want this done or offering it as a solution, just crossed my mind today.

A no from me, Sheedy is a markerter now, not a coach, it's well and truly passed him by and his role is more ceremonial than operational. Dragging him up to Brisbane would just dilute his legacy further. I don't think it's what we need.

No. I'm not sure if he still has it as a coach because I doubt he does much coaching at GWS. He's a figurehead not a mentor

If we really wanted a Svengali type I think Malcolm Blight would be better.

yeah you wouldn't get him for his coaching or tactical genious, the chances of him becoming straight senior coach are zero. i just wondered what others thought about his potential influence on our club, his mentality seems to be what's missing. I just know demons supporters are crying out for him, was interested if our fans felt the same. I'm really keen on Paul Roos if things don't turn around for Voss.

Most of us are, but he's no certainty to ever get back into it and he may already be sounded out by the AFL to do a Leigh Matthews on the Demons from tonight onwards.

Adam Simpson has been mentioned in some circles as the new fanboy assistant and I'd be ok with that. We need an outsider if something happens to Voss.

Imagine the field day Hammo could have with some of the stuff Sheeds sprouts. Ugh!

That's a NO from me!

Sheeds would have Hammo chasing his own tail in no time. He has one quality I really would like, and that's the ability to take on the media, the afl, other clubs, and anyone else that has a go. He remembers the history of the comp well, and despite having been part of one of the clubs that screwed us in 2004, has been key in the argument for GWS & Sydney's CoLA. He'd be a great advocate for the game in QLD.

That said, I'd prefer him in the mentor to Voss type position. Harvey isn't the figure Sheedy is, and doesn't have the depth of experience Sheedy does. A wise old head would be valuable.

The idea isn't bad, using an elder statesman in some capacity, but we've got one of them handy already that we should draft in... Leigh Matthews to the board! :)

Yeh sheeds would be a solid replacement for poor old vossy or Blight. Leaning to Blight cause of the stronger club connection, good all round coaching expertise, and depth of experience

I think this is what I was getting at. Someone to sit behind Voss, get around to the younger Guys at the huddle and just remind them of the non negotiatables. A Wise head to provide council and to make sure the right decisions are being made in a club sense, not so much in a tactical sense. Someone to impliment a tough front and try to instil some characture and culture around the club. Whilst I would most likely grow tired of Sheedy's rants, sometimes media talk is what creates this for clubs. When is the last time there was interest in a Lions game for any reason? Fevs first game againts Carlton? its all part of building culture. I feel our club needs experience, with the lack of support from the AFL etc, I feel a younger untried coach will just fall helplessly into a rut post Voss (if indeed that is where our future is heading). We need someone with form that can motivate and lead, its been far to long between drinks.

Hopefully, if we can beat Carlton and a couple of others over the next few weeks, turn our season around, finish 10th or so - someone like this can be used in a senior assistant/ mentor to Voss type role, I agree, whilst I like him, Harvey is not the Guys for this.

I would love Leigh back in some capacity, but Would he get Lost just sitting on the board? what about president? any chance at all he could coach again?, haha - He has admitted he is a Lions man, he wont play any role while Voss is there.

Sheeds is a big name. Could generate significant interest in the club off the field and as a result help our financial woes at the very least. At the most, could assist in some way (a wise head as others have mentioned) to the performance on the field.

I'm honestly not sure why we are talking about Sheedy. I mean why on earth would he bail out on GWS, a club and a region he has personally developed and invested in, to suddenly get up and go to Brisbane.

It will just not happen.

Plus, if he was a long term option as a senior coach, you'd think that GWS would have kept him on in that role. They have seen Sheeds as a short term option from the very beginning. That tends to suggest the end of his shelf life is approaching or has past.

The reason I raised Sheedy is because he is finishing at GWS at the end of the year, and the discussion was had yesterday about his future. Roos sugested he might move to take over the GWS acadamy, others have sugested a role with Melbourne. The consensus is generally, he has proven he still has some net worth in the industry and he will most likely look for a role somewhere next year. Yes it may be with GWS but it would only be with the acadamy. With Brisbane currently in a degree of turmoil, it is a perfectly reasonable discussion in my opinion, whether its about Sheedy directly, or a similar figure head as others have raised, and the potential of them playing a role at our club next year with or without Voss still around.

I do not think we should employ him as our next stand alone senior coach.. however..

Marketing, operations at club level, interaction with fans, bare minimums, respect, motivating young players and generally being taken seriously are all things we lack and he is an expert in all areas.

I have stressed several times that I didn't intend the discussion to be focused on him purely being a candidate as a senior coach. In terms of the Lions that is not going to happen. The role may be Mentor, Senior assistant, director of coaching or maybe something else?.. maybe I should have specified, 'NOT AS SENIOR COACH'. He was always only doing 1-2 years at GWS, we are all aware of the diluted role he has played there as coach. IMO that does not mean he will not be employed elsewhere next year, infact his stock has risen in my view, and a role for him at Melbourne, Brisbane or another struggling club is well within the realms of possibility.
