Shepherding the player on the mark

Some things never change. Carey brought this up on Talking Footy, and it was noticeable on the weekend. Hawthorn continuing to shepherd players on the mark. It is ridiculous that they are still able to do this.

Every team (even yours) does it. Once play on is called, it is simply a shepherd. Just remember, if there is one player shepherding, that means there’s an extra player elsewhere l.
It’s. A total non issue

It is a big issue. You can't be just shepherding the man on the mark, you should be no where near the guy. It is ridiculous. What I saw on the weekend was a joke, and I am glad Carey brought it up. He was clearly baffled why it still happens as well, but more to the point, why Hawthorn still continue to get away with this.

ummm because it's not against the rules??

Geelong showed how to counter this tactic perfectly a year or two back.

The player on the mark is protected - cannot be engaged or stood beside. A player can stand behind ready, and only engage once play on is called.

Geelong start on the mark, then back away, engaging the player getting ready to shepherd - umpire stops play and Cats get more time to setup defensively.

Carey bought it up because North is playing Hawthorn this week no more no less.
He was baffled until it was pointed out to him that when a player deviates of the mark its called play on and its legal to shepherd.

it's ridiculous that the commentators in the media still don't understand rules or basic tactics

If you mess with the player on the mark before play on is called then play is stopped and the defense has more time to flood back and setup

If you plan to shepherd after play on is called then you are committing two of your players to where the mark was taken, your opponent has an extra player elsewhere without an opponent to worry about, like where the ball is going to be kicked for example allowing the defense to outnumber the forwards.

The only reason this is seen as an issue is because instead of the commentators explaining the rules and the impact of the tactic on both teams they just go the lazy he's interfering with the man on the mark line. Once play on has been called there is no mark so there is no interference.
