Sherman leaves Brisbane

Aker just fed it to him on SEN, laughing at him and his positional demands and stating that even at his best he's only a B- player. He said that great players need to play various positions to learn the game. Also stated that the Dogs cut corners when it comes to $ in certain departments (diet etc) and this will bite them sooner rather than later. He said Sheman would notice the difference
as soon as he starts training.

I am not too sure what to make of the comments that Sherman has made. The thing that is conspicuously absent from any football article is any reference to the questions that the journos ask to garner the responses that they get (in any article, not just these ones). I was not there, but I can imagine this sort of thing:

Journo: How do you think your 2010 season went compared to your 2009 season?"
Shermo: I was played in many different positions blah blah hard to get consistency"

Journo: "Did the Fev situation unsettle the club"
Shermo: "Fev was a big distraction"

And then all that they do is print the responses in an order that suggests that all the comments were made in one continuous attack on the club. I am not saying he is totally innocent - I am just saying that journos are notorious for taking comments like that out of context and taking major poetic license when compared to the context in which the comments were made.

He was inconsistent and perhaps he needs to change environments to inject some freshness into his game. I wish him all the best and, before passing judgement on his comments, would love to see the total flow of questions asked to get the responses that he made.

seanc does make a valid point. We've banged on and on abou Lethal and Vossy being quoted out of context, but are prepared to cut them slack, but as soon as a player elects to leave we'll believe the worst. We know the journos are out to twist anything against us ATM

I'm not saying he didn't say those things. Some of trhe direct quotes are I agree pretty naive, but I'm not discounting for a minute that Voss' inexperience hasn't played a part. And if he did, then it's his problem, not ours and makes us look better for trading him out.

What we've seen is the more fragile personalities around the club leaving. It might make us a tougher unit, so perhaps going harder on the players this year has had a positive affect.

Serious question as my memory is hazy.

Our club came under a teensy weensy bit of criticism for picking up 5 players from other clubs in last year's trade week/draft - Fev, Amon, Stakes, Goose and Xav.

Did a single one of them bag the culture of their ex-club or quality of their ex-teamates?

Just asking as I can't recall.

Is it seriously the case that Fev > Sherman in terms of class and respect?

If so, freakin' WOW

I can cop the criticism of the club. Some of it is consistent with the general consensus around here.

But I've banged on about the accountability of the players for season 2010. For all the disasters that have occurred, I got the feeling that a few players (not all - probably not even the majority) used the crap off the field as an excuse for non-performance on the field. I was really reluctant to let the focus on Voss, Collins, Allan, Bowers allow the players to get away with their under-performance.

Sherman's comments are a pretty clear sign that, he at least, takes no accountability for his performances in 2010.

One of my favourite quotes is from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"When it is dark enough, you can see the stars."

Some clarification from the man himself. I was expecting this.

“I can understand how people have taken that view after what I said yesterday. I want to make it clear though that this is by no means a reflection of how I feel about my time at the Brisbane Lions. I will always be grateful to the Lions for giving me the opportunity to play AFL football and I left the club with many fond memories. I was really keen to express my excitement about joining the Bulldogs yesterday and that probably lead me to saying certain things that are not a true reflection of my thoughts. I apologise if I have caused any offence to anyone at my former club and want to make it clear that the last thing I wanted to do was criticise an organisation that has given me so much.

“It was wrong of me to use the term ‘culture’ because that is not what I meant to refer to. I was trying to say that certain off field distractions had been tough to deal with but these issues were not representative of the Lions as a whole. I have the highest respect for Michael Voss and everything he has achieved. I am only young and clearly still have a lot to learn both on and off the field, I just hope that this clears up the issue. I am very excited to start the pre season with the Bulldogs and I hope people will see that the impression I gave is not a true reflection of what I am about,” Sherman said

Credit to Shermo for the "clarification". I hope he lets his footy do his talking for him henceforth.

I believe the Dogs had a little word to Sherman and that clarification is the result.

Sounds like Shermo and the Dogs read the outcry on Big Footy yesterday, although today's comments sound very considered, staged and scripted, but nonetheless, at least his original comments were acknowledged as being thoughtless and he rescinded them as such.

That was my immediate interpretation too.

Nah, too touchy feely for me, this is tribal, we are in the trenches, surrounded and copping it from everybody.
No retreat, no surrender, no forgiving.
See you next year !

Aker predicted this on SEN this morning. Wondered whether he'd already received the call from Smorgon.

He predicted it, because the Dogs would've had similar conversations with him over the last four years. :)

Difference is, Sherman seems like a dumb kid who still has a chance to mature.
