Lots of kids have them. Anybody got any special methods they use or know of to help get rid of them

Thanks in advance

I'm not a doctor, but I work in medical imaging, so I scan shin splints all the time.

Any one who tells you than shins splints can be "run through" is an idiot. The only result is a stress fracture.

Best medicine is rest.

Been there done that :(. Seriously listen to this Messenger.

And upon your resumption get an experts opinion on your feet and shoe style.

How early on? Constant pain = complete rest. Only pain after exercise, try this first:

Tennis Ball (or similar semi-soft covered ball). Roll up and down your leg as hard as you can without pain...build up resistance over time until your really putting a lot of effort into it.

Don't know why it works, but a friend recommended it, and helped me get over mine (after battling for close to 18 months). Also used round sticks to roll instead.

Another one i've used with great effect, is to buy foam cups, fill them with water and let them freeze over night.

When they're ready use the same technique as the fella with the tennis ball used.

No kidding... I've been plagued by shinnies on-and-off for several years.

When I'm playing footy/cricket/going for a job I have to tape my feet how the match physio's do. That usually works. But after the pre-season on the rock hard grounds the shinnies really flare up, I'm going to try that technique. Cheers. :thumbsu:

EDIT: I never realised rubbing the shinnies out was what you were meant to do, I thought that'd just make it worse. Bloody amature mistake.

Go see a specialist I compete in Athletics and could barley walk oct 2007 went to see my pyso who happens to be a aths coach who sent me to get shoe's with more support and swimming exercises was fine a month after initial consultation.
But it differs from person to person resting does nothing and running through it will cause more excruciating pain.
Go get treatment is my best advise for you

Only permanent solution is to get personaly-fitted orthotics to wear in all your shoes, particularly runners/footy boots.

Resting, running on soft surfaces, taping, icing, etc... are all fine temporarily, but if you are an athlete, then you can't keep going on like that.

Speak to a podiatrist (however it's spelt) and ask about orthotics. They are fairly expensive, but well worth it.

I struggle with them due to having flat feet but have just had my best pre-season ever...before breaking my collar bone last week in a scratchy

Anyways...
- Make sure you have inserts that support the bridge of your foot.
- Wear shoes/boots which have a stiff bridge for extra support...Aasics are highly recommended.
- Run on soft surfaces, always grass...not too hard. Never concrete.
- Have a thorough warm up and pay particular attention to stretching your calf. There are numerous stretches.
- If you feel pain, stop. Ice and consider skipping a session.
- Ice after activity.
- Strapping can be used, but personally, I'd keep it restricted to the foot. Strapping to above the ankle, despite being more supportive, merely restricts movement terribly. But really that depends on the quality of your trainer.
- Rub downs can be very effective but make sure your trainer isn't simply rubbing down your shin but rather massaging the sheath running parallel.
- If it is unbearable to walk on, rest and/or participate in low impact activity like swimming, cycling etc.

Ultimately, you will always have problems with them but it's a matter of managing it. It's an absolutely shithouse injury...hope this help you manage it

I disagree, it's a very good game, but i think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.

im a cricketer and currently battling my way through shin splints during my post season (yes!! post season) training.

im at the physio once a fortnight, i have my orthotics on order, and quite frankly they giving me the shits.

Tennis ball, frozen cup are good method. One that i find works best for short term pain relief, is getting a concentrated peice of ice (ice pack is what i use). Rubbing towards yourself/up your leg in the crevis of your two bones in your lower leg. Reduces short-term pain immensely.

the wikipedia page actually provides a bit of decent information on them.

Shin splints is an umbrella term used to describe a number of different conditions resulting in shin pain, including a stress fracture.. Generally it's caused by a biomechanical problem, which is made worse by hard grounds, extra training etc. Also common in people who have had previous ankle problems.
Depending on the individual (excessive pronation when running) orthotics might be the easiest and quickest way to fix it provided its not a stress fracture. Otherwise your probably looking at low-non impact exercises for a period while you correct the problems leading to the pain- probably need a physio or podiatrist to assess you.

Massage can provide symptomatic relief but wont cure the problem, same goes with anti- inflammatories.
