Should the AFL increase list spots by a couple?
I think it could be worthwhile, considering the AFL is looking at both a midseason draft and a AFL reserves comp.
Take away the rookie list and just add it to the main list, and then add a supplemental list of four from each teams State league. This should be used for turn key players, and not young kids. There should be some age requirement such as over 21 years of age or previously being on an AFL list.
This could allow each team to have a couple of spare rucks they can access should they need it, as ruckman injuries is what the midseason draft was centred around.

Increase the amount of kids drafted in my eyes will results in more Rory Lairds and Charlie Camerons getting found.

The quality of the bottom 4 or 5 players on each list is pretty ordinary. Adding more may find the odd gem that was overlooked. But by and large it will just be adding poor players to the AFL system. I prefer to keep the rookie system. If anything, I would increase the rookie system. This way we can clearly separate which players teams are genuinely attacking a premiership with and including that in the TPP. Then there is a secondary rookie list that allows clubs to develop speculative players. But these are not counted toward the TPP.

Given the number of poor players on AFL lists, its pretty clear that the number of teams is too many for the players that we have available. If we could get rid of say 2 teams and bring it back to a 16 team competition, then I think what your saying makes more sense.

When the AFL reserves happen (might not be this year, but there is an air of inevitability about it) then definitely should be increased to 50+

Yep I also agree, AFL lists should be larger and teams have 2 sides playing each week in the AFL, reserves and seniors. No random top-ups. All players who play in either side have to be listed. It would be great to go to games each week and watch the reserves play first, and then the seniors. The professionalism of junior football programs continue to progress rapidly each year, which would see the players who are considered at the bottom of each list not that far away from being capable of playing at AFL level. And with the amount of players these days who seem to be unlucky not to get drafted, I don't see there being a need to ravage state leagues for mature aged players for this to achieved.

I actually like watching the reserves when you have young kids to keep an eye on. As it stands, a couple of injuries and you end up watching blokes from some club like Gaza running around.
If there was an additional 2 kids drafted by each club in the ND it would be that a couple of them would make the grade which makes the first 22 stronger.

I feel lists should be increased when the afl cuts down the teams from 18 to a maximum of 16. 14 would be preferable by culling 3 in melb and merging gold coast and brisbane. Could have 13 rounds and then 6 games against surrounding teams based on ladder position followed by finals. Would make for a much better competition.

Afl reserves would be good seeing players of the future develop however it'd be ready hard on the state league and having such a list over 50 means more money..
But we'll see someone return to that #52 :)
