Not in a million years. AFL legends is for players and coaches who have made an outstanding contribution to the game.

Lou has not coached and as a player no one with half a brain would call his contribution outstanding, all things concidered.

If he is instated as a legend it would make the legends of the game idea a joke and would be a slap in the face at current legends.

i think he should because not only did he play 250 games and captained Collingwood, he also promoted the game in a time when the AFL did not particularly go out of its way to push the game. I'm a saints supporter but I do think Lou richards is a deadset legend.

Under the current criteria no.

If you were to include his media work and commentary work then there is an argument for it.

Its a shame the way this whole issue has been dealt with.

People shouldn't be inducted into the Hall of Fame purely on media work. To be an AFL Legend, you need to add a massive contribution to the game either on the field or in a coaches box. Lou Richards was not a talented play and as it's been said, wasn't in Collingwood's team of the century and he didn't even coach

Roy Cazaly was given legend status, but he wasn't in Souths or St Kildas team of the century, only won 2 best and fairest, never won a premiership, and only captained St Kilda for a season.

His coaching career only lasted 5 years, where he had a winning percentage of less than 30.

He got in because his name was a catch phase, Lou's 40 years of promoting the game doesn't compare to that does it?

Isn't this just the same old arguement about Ablett/Carey only reversed. When the media argue for them they say that stuff outside playing the game should be ignored. Now they're saying it should be considered!!

Lou's a top bloke and a legend in the media, but not in the Hall of Fame unfortunately.

So do you think he is a marketing legend or a football legend?

He was not good emough as a footy player to make it in Colligwoods team of the century.

The AFL want to bestow an award to Lou, but he dug his heels in and said 'no' he wanted the legend award.

Its not a media award....He is already in the Hall of Fame, but apparently thats not good enough for Louie..so he knocks back the award he was offered, (AFL lifetime award??)..

No humility or show of gratitude from him at all...he EXPECTS to be given it!......No, not legend material in my eyes..

p.s.....no-one comes close to Louie as far as media and promotion of the game in the last 50 years....but as I said, its not a media award..

Your a d***head.
Hes 86.
Hes in a nursing home.
His wife of 60 years died last year.
I don't think it is his highest priority atm.

He hasn't been pushing to be inducted, we have because we think that it would be a nice sentiment for him to enjoy while he is still alive. And he is well within his right to refuse some shitty made up award from the AFL.

Youve made a couple of valid points, Louie was good at promoting the game, but that isnt what the award is for.

As for the other point, he did in fact knock back AFL's proposal to give him a lifetime achievement Award.

Seems strange, I dont think anyone, no matter who, is in a position to demand what award is to be given to them.

Nice as the sentiment would certainly be, Lou just doesn't qualify for official Legend status as the criteria currently stands. He won't until media performance has it's own "Legend" Hall of Fame category.
The AFL thought it'd be nice to recognise him with a lifetime achievement award while he's still alive. I think that's pretty nice as well, as it's an honour he genuinely deserves.

Oh well.
If Lou doesn't want to be (further) recognized officially for his achievements while he's still alive, story settled! He doesn't have to be.:thumbsu:

I dont like it that people from colligwood have asked the afl to give him legend status. The be a legend is one of the highest awards in our game. You cant just request legends status and then complain when you dont receive it.
