Can someone explain the difference between a priority pick which apparently hasn't been given out since Brisbane got pick 19 in 2016 and an assistance package that got Gold Coast pick 1 or North Melbourne's draft concessions which got them picks (at the time) 22 in 2023 and picks 19, 22 in 2024.

If we want extra picks or list spots we can't call it priority picks we need to rebrand it. Call it Draft Aid or Draft Allowance.

That flogger Bartel claimed that the Eagles shouldn't get a priority draft pick because we got pick 1 in the 2023 draft
and Jack Hutchinson at pick 3 overall in last years draft. We got Jack at pick 3 in the mid season draft.
Typical comments from an ignorant Pricktorian who cant help himself with the bullshit he spreads.

James Hird is also on the bandwagon with Bartel and he is just as bad, he doesn't understand the laws of the game as they stand now. His comments re Harley getting a suspension for tripping against Port prove he knows jackshit. Maybe the Peptides have affected him .
Does anyone know if James criticized the heavily front ended deal Essendon constructed to get Norf a first round FA compo pick for that SuperSpud Mackay.

I think Twomey was saying that the last time a single priority pick was handed out was 2016. Since then, the picks have come as part of packages that included multiple picks and/or concessions (Suns in 2019 and North in 2022).

Welp, Swann, first day on the job and says nope basically.

"AFL footy boss Greg Swann wants West Coast to copy other re-building teams as priority pick calls fall flat"

We should still put the application in though, make them say no.

Sure give us discounted guaranteed access to Ashcroft x2 and Fletcher, and we'll give up calls for a priority pick

Helps when you have top-quality father-sons coming in (Ashcroft x2 plus Fletcher) and complete access to your northern academy (Hipwood, Harris-Andrews, Jack Payne, Keidean Coleman).

Swann and Brisbane put its hand out for assistance AND got it in the form of an end of first round draft pick

Not to mention the leg up of being able to add any player, not just indigenous that they wanted to their academies when other clubs couldn’t and still can’t.

He’s the last person who should be giving lectures on this stuff as he had his hands out whilst at the helm of the Lions the whole damn time.

Talk about double standards.

Close the thread, pretty clear with the speed they got this out in the media today that they are not going to help us.

Yep, we should copy North Melbourne and how much assistance they received.

Shhhhhhh, you'll summon him

Perhaps a line has been put through further draft complications (picks) but instead of that mechanism they'll allow us to boost our list size and access our NGAs without competition? Concessions instead of Priority Picks...

They're not going to go all in straight away. If we're this shit a few years down the road after the above then maybe PPs come into play.

if the club and Pyke had any balls start having this convo through the media. If the AFL think it’s fair enough to do so then let’s do it.

Schedule an interview between Pyke and Rhino where Pyke is asked will we ask for assistance and why do we think we deserve it.

Point out our recent history and how it compares to recent clubs who have been helped. Also point out how compromised the draft is due to the AFL propping up the northern state clubs with the added benefit of adding whoever they like to their academies (not just indigenous) and then also point out Swann and the Lions received an assistance package and that maybe Swann forgot about that when commenting.

Finish off by saying if we don’t receive assistance with our recent record over the past 4 years then it’s hard to see how any club in the future, financially stable or not can ask for assistance due to the fact that financial stability offers no advantage when you can’t pay players more, the soft cap is reduced to help poor clubs and the main mechanism to rebuild (the draft) is a joke,

See if they have the balls to reply publicly to that.

Priority Pick is not equal to assistance package though right?

I have not read the article, won’t actually, but does it explicitly quote him as ruling out any form of assistance to speed up our rebuild?

They are basically getting on the front foot after a bad loss and the realization we will finish the season with one win by planting a story in the west Australian newspaper with the bloke who just took over the role TODAY.

It’s pretty ****ing clear what they are trying to say. don’t ask, we don’t care…. So let’s call them out on it publicly.

We should also point out we've had 3 retirements due to concussion 2 of those were 1st round pics and the other a 5 time all Australian.

different conversation about list size NGA and rookie spots, this as a equalisation measure for the MOUNTAINS of travel we do should be a minimum, 2-3 rookie/NGA spots imo.

Onya Swannie, make the lazy sods work to pull us out of this mess, who knows maybe the development coaches might have to develop more and improve their methods, maybe we need to get better recruiters, maybe we need to go over the soft cap… maybe the players might have to do some skills work on their day off to come upto the level…or better fitness staff and the players might have to do extra on their fitness.

Nah just blame everything and everyone else.

In 2016 Brisbane got pick 19 as a priority pick. They traded that to Port for their 2017 first. This was used to trade for Charlie Cameron...

We just need to take that to Greg Swann and off we go it seems

Call me crazy, but I reckon you actually enjoy us being terrible.
Most if not all of us hate the position we're currently in.
Not you.

If you weren't complaining or putting the boot in, your posting output would drop by around 99% I reckon.

To combat creep face Swann, You need to do what the AFL and their VFl clubs do, that is use mouthpieces/puppets like they have on their payroll.

Below is a wall of text, genAI view, of how a organisation like the AFL would manage the removal of assistance packages for THE west coast eagles. See if any of it relates.

I’ll just add, that is important the eagles need to hustle their playbook for a plan to obtain a suitable assistance package.

Common Strategies Used:

1. Narrative Control
  • Frame it as "modernization" or "progress" rather than abandonment
  • Emphasize financial sustainability and long-term viability
  • Highlight successful clubs that "stood on their own feet"
  • Shift blame to external factors (economic conditions, changing market)

2. Historical Revision
  • Downplay the extent of previous assistance
  • Suggest past support was "exceptional" or "temporary"
  • Emphasize that times have changed
  • Frame previous support as unsustainable

3. Division Tactics
  • Create divisions between "progressive" and "traditional" clubs
  • Build coalitions with stronger clubs
  • Isolate struggling clubs as "outliers"
  • Use media allies to push the narrative
