“Not trying to win against casual racism”

Then what’s the point? dealing with issues like racism requires pragmatic solutions that require interacting with reality. If you don’t want to try and reduce or solve racism then I’d refer back to my original point around grandstanding.

If Collingwood can help combat racism we absolutely should. Crazy to think that Collingwoods actions during Sir Doug Nicholls round shouldn’t be aimed at that considering how many aboriginal people and players have spoken about how much it affects them.
Already answered this, so not really a good faith reply.

I feel like you're spitting multiple flaming responses.

Its a tame thread about a single aspect of Sir Doug Nichols round and you're complaining it "isn't solving racism". Maybe calm down, it wasn't a ruckus until you threadbombed it.

You can’t run a footy club out of a pub when Collingwood was literally founded in one shows that I’m not talking to someone serious about the clubs history or its duties to include its members in decision making and consultation.
No sequitur. Debate politely or maybe head out?

I’m not complaining that we haven’t solved racism and asking someone to calm down in a message thread is so hilariously bad faith I think I’m done engaging with you. Others have more insightful opinions that I’ve gleaned from anyway.

To compromise and agree I will say you raise good points around the idea that Australians don’t like special privileges not necessarily reflecting the reality of how many we have.

To be more correct I should have said “Australians do not like perceiving others as getting special privileges over themselves” the battle is in winning the argument and convincing people that equality isn’t a special privilege. You don’t do that by giving people such a publicly perceived special privileges like a constitutionally enshrined voice.

This goes back to who should Collingwood listen to when it comes to decisions on political issues. I lean towards heavily consulting members and focusing on education instead of lecturing or clunky performative actions like name changes.

I think the club is striking the right balance and have consistently done so for the past few years.
I think that you can get to the heart of perception of privilege vs reality by propagating the voices of the marginalised, and showing through action that it isn't some zero-sum tension.

Egalitarianism in this country has definitely taken some weird steps (sideways at best for many years), but I don't think Collingwood's role is to focus on consultation. I would rather see the club take leadership through bold action, i.e. commissioning the Do Better report, which many barrackers would have reflexively opposed (and did so vocally throughout).

Collingwood is a member based, funded and founded organisation and would be doing itself a massive disservice to make a habit of ignoring its members in consultation processes around fundamental issues such as the name of the club itself.

Do better was a different story in my eyes.

I have no issue with it for two rounds. Just hoping it would be a name that works in football chants etc.
You know we can still do the Collingwood chant irrespective of what we call the club for those two rounds. The chant need not change at all.

Fantastic thing to do and Would be a great mark of respect to past and current indigenous players including our greats
Leon Bobby and the late Andrew

I think we're in a unique position where "Collingwood" is such a big name across all of Australia that there's far more unity, harmony and recognition along that one name than any other.

Is there actually any name that we could change to? I've never heard if there was an indigenous name for the geographic area of Victoria Park specifically.

Not Victoria Park specifically, but I found this for Collingwood:-

“The area now known as Collingwood is thought to have been named Yálla-birr-ang by the Wurundjeri people, the original Indigenous inhabitants of the area.[3]” (from Wikipedia).

No.
We are Collingwood.

But, I’d be pretty ok with the crowd chanting Yalla-birr-ang in Coll-ing-wood style.
Personally I would love it if we assumed the name for the two rounds.
Literally means the "Wood"en tip of a reed spear.
It's indigenous for Collingwood
As Aussie as it gets...

"Yalla-birr-ang!"
"Yalla-birr-ang!"

"Yalla-birr-ang!"

Indigenous round.
Use our indigenous name.
RESPECT our brothers.
Go back to Collingwood after the round has been completed. How ****ing hard is that?

Do the Crows use the Indigenous word for magpie? How strange.
Perhaps we could use the Indigenous word for Currawong.
According to google the Wurundjeri word for magpie is Barrawarn.

As someone living in Sydney, the indigenous name and jumper changes are an utter disaster for casual fans. They have no idea what’s going on and think it’s a reserves game and stop watching

It’s such obvious and embarrassing pandering that achieves nothing

This just screams of being completely untrue. Looking forward to hearing your proposals for achieving something

If u think a casual fan know who Euro-Yroke are you are very naive. If you think having casual fans not being able to identify which teams are playing isn’t a bad idea you’re also very naive.

That probably says more about Sydney people.

It depends if casual fans are watching the game though. I'm sure the pre game celebrations would give a good idea.

As gouki said, would love to hear your suggestions for changing something and addressing racism in society. You've always been very quick to tell us all on here what is performative and what is misguided when it comes to address racism, but have never seen you actually offer any alternatives?

This thread is about changing our name, not about how to fix indigenous issues. I have made multiple comments about how indigenous issues need to be tackled in more appropriate threads so you’re wrong about that.
