Have you ever had a twist of fate that has prevented you from not being killed?

When I was 6 or 7 my neighbour across the street was going to drive down the road to pick up some supplies for his son's christening party and I was going along for the ride with him. Just as I was about to climb into the car my mum noticed that I didn't have anything on my feet and told me to run inside and put some shoes on. I was assured that my neighbour would wait for me to return before he took off. Needless to say we I did come back out of the house to get into the car he had gone.

Later that day came the news that he was involved in an accident with a semi-trailer and was critically injured and subsequently sadly passed away the next day. I know there are lots of ifs and buts that accompany a story like this but I guess sometimes there must be an all encompassing power and guide looking over all of us and obviously it wasn't time for me to go yet. Having said that I am not religious at all but you would imagine something like this would make me a believer.

Any similar happenings with you or a close friend or family member that spring to mind?

Nothing with fatal consequences, but if I hadn't have forgotten my walkman and not have had to go back and retrieve it from my seat, I would have missed Micky Conlan's glorious match-winning goal in the dying seconds of the '86 Elim.

Grrrr, thanks for reminding me of that!

Not quite in the same league, but Mum was engaged when she met Dad, so if he hadn't been able to turn her head I wouldn't be here (curses I hear you say ).

My mum was in a very bad accident as a teenager - well late teens - just before she turned 20.

She was in a minnie that was run over by a semi at a set of lights in a storm. Her best friend died in the accident and the other 2 ppl in the car were left in wheelchairs. Mum was in a coma for a while - and amongst various other after effects/injuries, she was told she could never have children.

So yeah - we (my sister and I) are pretty darn lucky to be here I think.

umm ok well i was about to drive out of the driveway (we live on a main road) and i dropped my wallet. so i reversed back down the drive way a bit to get my wallet off my mum, and as i did a car came smack back into our fence. If i hadnt of gone back to get my wallet my car would have been cleaned up as well.

God yeah.
My mum still freaks out when she talks about it.

When i was 4 in Melbourne, i was a real trouble maker apparently. Always exploring outdoors and getting into mischief. Anyway, one day we went to my friend's place. And i remember getting bored in the front yard, and the gate was swinging back and forth in the wind, I went outside onto the street. I remember seeing a brown dog, I decided to follow it. I don't remember much after that, until I remember being down on the train-tracks still following the dog!

Apparently I was down on the track for about 20 minutes, then, (i can still see it) my mum yelling out 'NICHOLAS!' about 100 metres from me also on the enclosed train-tracks running to get me to safety. (and it was bloody hard for her as she was pregnant at the time) anyway, she got me to safety.

My mum was sure that we were all going to die, me, her and my little brother who was pregnant in my mum's stomach. The only thing that saved my life was the fact that it was the one day that the traindrivers were on strike!!!! Freaky

God bless their bludgy hearts!

I nearly got run over by a semi in greece when I was 6

Lucky my extroadinary pace saved my life.

When I was 15 my dad tried to strangle me, but my sis was there and for some reason he turned to look at her and I got away.

Lucky me.

Hey ladies let me wreck your day.

TWICE for me

I was hit by a car in preston when i was younger and dragged underneath for a good distance.

Nearly drowned at seaford beach when i was a youngster , infact before i was dragged out i was having visions of family members but i remember feeling peaceful and i believe as a result of that, to this day i can feel the presence of lost and tormented spirits..

When i was 8 i missed a lift to a scouts/ cubs camp and couldnt go, the three people in that car were killed in a head on collision.

So now you can understand why i believe each day on this planet for me is a blessing.

joffa that is pretty similar to my experience. I guess there were numerous tales like that on Sept 11 of people changing their flights at the last minute or missing their plane or even people who worked at the WTC being sick that day or even just feeling lazy or tired and having a sickie.

I'm sure little things have prevented my death on occasions, but nothing as obvious as anyone else who's posted. I think that there are probably many times that one decision has stopped us from dying, but we'll only rarely know about that.

I guess... when I was 3, my mother took over the driving when we were going up to Jeparit. She must have lost concentration, because she didn't look at a level crossing, went straight through when there was a train coming, then straight through a t junction missing a car and the train by moment, and only scratching her car on the fence... that was pretty lucky I guess. I only vaguely remember it though.

One of those "Sliding Door" type scenarios I guess is what you are saying. Go one way and your life is just another day in paradise but perhaps if you took the other fork in the road then......

Had several near misses:

When I was five, my mum and myself were running for the bus when I slipped and fell onto the road right next to the bus as it pulled out on to the road. The wheel was about 30cm from where I landed.

When I was six I accidently ran through a plate glass door. I managed to land on top of the glass and I was balancing on the jagged glass. I had a thick jumper on which acted as a cushion. Without the jumper I would have been sliced in half. I had wanted to take the jumper off beforehand but my mum had said it was too cold. My dad grabbed me and just as he did, the rest of the glass came falling down like a guilotine. I was taken to hospital as there was a lot of blood. All I had was a nose-bleed and a few scratches.

And here's the real wierd one. I used to live near City Oval in Box Hill. As a kid I regularly played in the park next to the Oval with all of the neighbourhood kids. After a while this bloke started hanging around with the kids. I would have been around eight at the time. This bloke used to tell us how he could kill people with his bare hands, he painted over all the graffiti around the place with para-military slogans, he told us about his crossbow collection etc. All the parents kept a close eye on him obviously. After a while he left the area and we didn't hear from him for a while UNTIL my mum was watching a show on TV about murderers and there he was..the guy that used to hang out with all of the neighbourhood kids. He had killed someone with an axe and was doing time in Boggo Rd Gaol.

Well, when I was born I was lucky it was when it was.......... I was born without a thyroid gland, and with severe lung deformities.... both have been fixed, but my parents said it was a close call.
Another time was when I was riding my bike in Leongatha and stupidly turned right in front of a car........ if that car had been going any faster i'd probably be dead.

not so much a twist of fate, but just luck.....

when i was driving on the inbound lane of the calder/tullmarine freeway just before the bell street exit in melbourne a driver in a ute swerved in front of me and chucked a glass bottle out of his window. it hit smack bang on my windscreen right in front of my face......boy did i **** myself.

While I was on a school camp, I was crossing a road with a group of friends. The road was a highway, and there was a car going probably about 80km/h. I was in the middle of the road, and if my friend hadn't called out to ask why I hadn't stopped, and if another friend hadn't grabbed me from behind, that car would have got me. For the next half hour my heart was racing....it was so bloody scary.

Got so many close calls, I would have to write a book. Most of them my fault. I was an adventurous sort before I grew wise. ;)

Let me tell you about "Sprague Curve" named after my friend....Sprague. He bought a new Mustang convertible. He wanted to show it off. He called everyone he knew to get someone to go for a spin. Every single one of us begged off for various reasons, so he went for a drive by himself.

He was doing in excess of 140kph (did the convert myself) when he rounded a corner to find the road completely blocked by a very large, stalled truck. He had no time to think (he only laid a couple of meters of skid). He had nowhere to go except to the grave yard.

Now out of respect, all of us he called that day, slow way down when we are negotiating Sprague Curve.

Peace, Mooster

Always wear a helmet . . .

When I was 16 I went off for a bike ride wearing a baseball cap instead of my helmet. I remember as I left home, I did a couple of double takes (ended up as a sort of premonition - which I naturally ignored!) I better put on my helmet, ah no stuff it! , eventually I decided to stuff it and just wear my cap! ;)
I was hooning on my bike down a steep hill on a busy street near where I live and my cap fell off, stupidly my reflex action was to slam on the brakes (both front and back). I came to a screaming halt and last remember flying over the handle bars, I semi-remember tumbling on the road several times too!

Five minutes later, a small crowd had surrounded me as I came back into the land of the living :D I had fallen head first at about 80km/h on a busy street, luckily up the road the traffic lights were red and there were no cars directly behind me.

I walked away (not really had to be driven home by a nice lady) with a broken arm and wrist, badly sprained other wrist and some scars on my face and back etc. People reckon I was lucky and must have a very hard head!

That's my closest near-death experience, apart from when I was a baby there were a couple of dodgy times they thought I wouldn't make it.

The moral of this story is always wear a helmet!!! ;) :D :D

Slipped halfway down a mountain side on a school excursion when I was about 14/5. I just reached out grabbing for anything I could, caught a shrub/bush that held. Was about five feet away from a fifty ft cliff drop onto rocks. Dont think that would have been much fun.
