Just read through this, a lot of people calling for unionising. Clearly haven't watched The Irishman... Unions only lead to Italians and Irish whacking people. It's what it is.

Interesting - the only thing unions ever achieved eh?

I must have missed the bit where billionaires just decided to hand out 40 hour weeks and wage increases etc etc etc out of the kindness of their hearts.

Isnt it an amazing coincidence that since unionism has been demonised by the right and union membership has gone down that pay and conditions for workers has gone to s**t.

Make no mistake there have been some terrible corrupt unions - sda - blf etc - but as a collective they have done more for workers rights than just about anything else - look at where weve come from the industrial revolution level of workers rights to now.

None of that was just handed over - it was fought for by unions

Unions have done an awful lot of good for workers rights even if they have done things the wrong way. However they caused a lot of problems for consumer rights, consumer prices, start up companies, business investment, business efficiency and the unemployed.

Unfortunately employers dont appear to have learnt the lessons from the past and have fallen back into old manipulative ways as union power has been eroded. Now I fear unions will come back as a result and bring all their old problems back too.

Your a socialist sympathiszer. Fair enough.

Holy s**t, dude - are you actually looking at your replies? Genuinely seems like you have no idea how to have a conversation.

Wage rises have stagnated in Australia due to massive immigration - which has been supported by both major parties at Federal and State level.

It's not like there have just been a couple of rogue unions. While Bill Shorten was national secretary of the Australian Workers Union, union membership fees were being paid by companies such as Winslow Constructors and Austral Bricks in return for reduced workers' entitlements. It was described as a beauty contest, where lower wages would be accepted in order to maximise the AWU's membership and lock other unions out. This boosted the AWU's power at Labor conference and for election candidate preselection. As far as their union leaders are concerned the purpose of Australian trades unions is to provide them with a route into parliament.

Its a pity in this corrupt shithole of a country that people - on every side of the spectrum dont go to jail for corruption

We need a fully funded icac stat.

F#%^^ stat.

Shortly after arriving I had a dispute about some work a dodgy plumber did for me, and we were prwtty short of cash at the time it was a huge issue.
he since appeared in the media s ‘the plumber from hell’

the plumbers union/association censured him, made sure everything was pit right for us just for the price of the original quote.
they were wonderful to us as consumers.
i am not a union member

Young people fill the roles at these joints because we have a society that values their time less than an adult and legislated as such, as well as the expectation that young people working there are in the process of upskilling to move to a better position later in their lives.

It would be worse for people in their 30s or later who are unskilled and competing for working positions with children who can be paid less.

This is a phenomenon where the millenial style crowd demands justice and fairness but then financially support the mega social media and mega retail businesses that definently aren't the good guys

doesn't appear on the agenda for this group, just as oldies have been dropped from inclusiveness

The last few years there has been countless news stories about large companies and small underpaying their workers. Wage theft from deliv=berate underpaying, no penalty rates, illusory traineeships, employment contracts that disadvantage their staff.
Woolworths and Grill’d as two recent examples

https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6465506/woolworths-underpaid-staff-by-up-to-300m/

Woolworths is one of Australia’s Top 10 companies, ubiquitous in media and location, widely held in Superfunds and self managed retiree funds.
This is a company with 18 million visits per week

Griil’d is an overpriced burger joint that has done remarkably well. They have expanded to around 150 stores. Part of that success can be put down to ripping off workers and churning staff, while overworking the remaining staff

Is there any point for workers in service an retail to work hard and give a fu** about their hobs or emplyers? The reward for effort is to be underpaid and overworked.

If the companies and bosses don't give a s**t, why should the workers?

Because if you don't give a s**t, you can be unemployed.

What about finding other work, which pays better, while you are still employed. At least then, you have something to go to.

Being unemployed sucks, and Newstart doesn't pay much more than being underpaid on wages.

All that will happen at these restaurants and other places is, if they are forced to pay award wages, they will simply hire less staff.

That means more unemployed.

You are crazy if you think they will pay more in wages.

Usually when I'm underpaid I record all events and have a mental breakdown the following week. It's called workcover for a reason

I see it more as workers coming to Coles or Woolies and just doing the minimum they have to. No attempted customer interaction, not caring about freshness of product, not caring about whether the goods sell or not.
If the employer doesn't care about them why should they give a s**t about the employer's business?

An employer can give you less hours for not caring about the customers, or the goods they sell.

They have the whip hand. In all parts of society, there are those who direct, and those who have to follow.

If you don't like that arrangement, find someone who pays you better, or start your own business, and pay yourself what you think you deserve.
