Unless I'm mistaken, we are on top of the ladder.
Not the Bulldogs.
This talk of bringing in a running player makes no sense whatsoever.
Why would we want to subscribe to playing the Dogs gameplan when we are the ladder leaders? They are the ones who should be trying to shut us down, not the other way around.
All year we have played the way we want to play, so there should be no change in approach from the match committee this week. We played very well last week, thus we should bring in a like for a like.
This means four changes:
Ins-
  • Gardiner
  • Ball
  • Maguire
  • Hudghton
Outs-
  • McEvoy
  • Eddy
  • Koschitzke
  • Dawson
There is nothing wrong with the way we play when we get the Sherrin in our hands. Handball, run hard, use the corridor and kick direct to our forwards if given the opportunity.
I'm sure everybody remembers how we have played when our forward structure is altered.
In times past when one of Riewoldt or Kosi has been out, it has looked very barren inside the arc and we rarely make the most of our inside 50 entries.
We need to continue to play the same game style that we have moulded over the past 16 rounds for the rest of the season.
Playing football any differently now that the team has changed slightly is fraught with danger.

Awesome thread ChrisL#12. Totally agree. Not sure if they will bring bally back in after only 1 game out, would prob give him a couple more weeks. Im down for the other 3 changes though.Love to see big goose kick a few goals in his 100th match.

Agree wazza. I can't see how Bally can come back in if he was "dropped", but didn't play in the 2's. The other 3 changes look almost automatic. Macca probably played his best game against the crows, but should have a spell at sandy (the game time he's got will be invaluable next season).

I think we'll be seeing Gwilt come in this week as a second tall rather than Goose. I could see bringing in Goose if we were playing a team like Melbourne, but this isn't a week to be trying new things as Goose has never played as a FF in the seniors. Didn't he only play forward for a couple of games at Sandy?

Why do you think Eddy will go out? For Ball?

Well the reason is because I think that Ball got "dropped" just like Dal and Milne got "dropped" last year. I think it may just be a rouse to keep everybody on their toes so to speak. So he doesn't have to play a game to get back in. That's just what I think on that matter anyway, could be wrong of course.

Assuming Ball got dropped, he hasn't had a game to show that he now knows whatever the coaches wanted him to work on has sunk in, so it's a different scenario to Dal and Milne last season

On that basis, I can't see him coming back in even though he is obviously in our best 22

If it was more for a rest up and to get his body right, then he could come back in, but only if fit (and in that case would most likely replace Eddy)

Don't reckon Ball will come back in, as others have noted, if he was legitimately dropped as it appears he was, they'd want to see some things in the magoos before he came back in. If he was 'rested' under the guise of a dropping then different story, but appears as though he was dropped. Not sure Max ready to come back in either on the face of different things heard and read.

Gwilt will come in for Kosi
Goose for Zac
Gardiner for McEvoy - only if Gardiner 100% fit - they won't be taking risks

I agree with your original post ChrisL#12.

We play a great brand of football and should not be forced to alter much against any team. If we apply plenty of pressure to their main ball users and 'outlet runners' like Griffin, Higgins & Cooney we should force them to turn the ball over and with no real tall timber up forward for them, except Minson who has spells at full forward, we should have the upper hand. As in most games of footy it is crucial for us to get our hands on the ball frist at the clearances and if we do this more often then not, we should be able to win.

Last time we played the Dogs Cooney was really underdone so with him in good form they will definitely recieve a significant boost around the stoppages. I really think it is a danger game for us this week but altering our gameplan by adding more running players probably isn't the right option. I believe it will be very interesting to see our matchups on their small forward line. Brad Johnson hit some great from last week, although he did get plenty of the ball away from the goals and i don't think his disposal going into the 50 was too great but he still found plenty of the ball, so i think Fisher is probably the option on him. As for the rest, i'm not too sure. Hudghton, assuming he is brought in for Dawson, could go onto Hahn/Minson and possibly even Johnson if he's played deep. As for Murphy and Welsch, i think Gilbert would be able to do a good job on both. I won't continue to speculate about the possible matchups but i think it will be very intriguing as i believe that the Dogs have the best small forward line in the league - better than Collingwood's.

As for the changes, i mainly agree with the first post but like others i doubt that Ball will come in.

What has Lyon and the coaching staff got wrong this year = Nothing.

Surely anthing that they do has a reason for it being done so keep the faith in the decisions being made ;)

This is all a bit logical and well written. Pretty much no speling errors either

I read an article on Rodney Eade. The topic was that he had developed the gameplan for the teams he was coaching based on a method to win games with the list he had , not based on an ideal theory. He felt that the flood was the right thing for Sydney at the time, and that the current gameplan was best for the dogs with their lack of talls.

At the start of the Bulldogs game last week, you could see them being easily outmarked in their forward 50. We don't need to negate this advantage by bringing in short defenders to defend against their short attackers.
If they beat us they will beat us in the midfield.

Pretty much, but it will be their delivery which is the most important. We force them to kick it in long as Collingwood did 2 weeks ago, our backs will have half the job done. No surprise to see the Dogs get back into the game against Collingwood 2 weeks ago by running in the footy.

Is anyone with me in wanting to have CJ run with Higgins?

I'm with you - Stuff the SC teams.

Higgins or the CoonDog

Higgins doesn't get the ball a hell of a lot from what I've seen of him this season, but is super damaging when he does get it

Cooney should be in much better shape this time around than last time

Neither are in my Dream Team so I don't mind

Speak for yourself, I've got both Cooney & Higgins in my team so I'd rather see him tag Cross, Griffin or some other Dogs player I don't have.:D

I can't see any reason to tag Griffin, DT or not!

Haha......if you may allow me to use a cliche, "I am still learning the caper" around here (I only just found the 'quote' button) so if i do anything untoward or out the ordinary feel free to pull me up for it.

Anyway, i'm really looking forward to this game. I feel that I savour the victory much more when it is against a quality opponent or when the game is in dispute until the final few minutes.

P.S - I laughed when you couldn't even spell spelling correctly, or was that a conscious error:p?
