I thought it was quite interesting how much this season has similar to our premiership year in 1998.

Both years had the same
13 wins
Finished 5th after minor round
must play every final
lost our leading goal kicker (Modra - Burton)
If Dogs win friday night would play them in a prelim at the G if we advanced that far
Would go in complete underdogs in a Grand Final
Had key small forwards carrying injuries while playing (Vardy - Porps)
Won only one Showdown

Thats about where it ends though. The reality of 98 is that we were much better than a 5th placed side. We had clearly the best % in the comp.

It is hard to believe that before round 22 we were no certainties to even make the 8, then we could have gone out the first week of the finals had all the results not fallen our way.

We got flogged in our first finals match in 98.

There are so many of these threads here again, just like last year.

The path to the Grand Final is pretty simple it seems.

It's not about being negative, it's being realistic. It will be a tough game this week, then next week we play a team which smashed us a fortnight ago. It ain't gonna be easy kiddo.

I dont recall saying we will win the flag.
I did say must play all finals, if we advance that far etc. Pal

On a wider view - last player to kick 100 goals occurred in 1998.

Lloyd x2 and Gehrig have both done this since then.

I only mentioned our club

But you forgot that we lost the first final, it was under a different system and we could afford to lose the first final even though we were 5th, once certain results went our way. It's possibly why the finals system got changed after that year. ;)

agreed I get sick of reading the crap about making the GF being easy.

The fact that nearly every year two of the top 4 sides makes the GF shows that the odds are hugely against a side from outside making it.

The honest truth is the saints took whatever slim chance we had away. Thats why most of us that are realistic were totally gutted about the St Kilda Essendon game.

We will be lucky to win this week let alone winning the following week in melbourne to make it to a prelim final.

Yeah I understand this. Thats why I said similarities, not exactly the same :thumbsu:. I thought all these were quite interesting.

Agreed. Things like omens and fate denigrate the hard work that your team will have to put in to even make the preliminary final, let alone the grand final. Do you think the players would appreciate being told that all their effort to get there was for nothing because it was just 'fate' that they succeeded?

Just be thankful your team has a shot at it.

In sport, funny things can happen. I think we got lucky in 1998 as other results seemed to save us. 5th placed Adelaide got thrashed against 4th placed Melbourne and the rest was history. This year the finals system is different. If you put the 1998 ladder and used today's finals format Adelaide would face Essendon at home in week one. In week 2 they would have played Melbourne at the MCG. Week 3 would have been against the Bulldogs then North Melbourne in the Final.

Where on this thread has anyone made mention about getting to a GF being easy:confused:

Once again this proves people don't read things before typing. No one has said its our fate or its a omen. I have simply said there are a few interesting similarities between both years

Scary stuff.....i'm leaving for the Philippines :o

I can see dejavu.

I think the Crows are the only squad to challenge Geelong. Please prove me wrong.

The Crows will deal with Collingwood, then put aside St Kilda ( as they do in finals ) that will be a semi, no fears on the G or the Dome for the Crows.

No West Coast. Maybe the Bulldogs. Bunny's in a Prelim.

Go into a GrandFinal against Geelong as underdogs, and thrash the favorites. Porps does a Jarman.

I feel sick.

Maybe not in this thread as such, but other threads were people, that dont understand the finals system, were trying to say that if we win this week it wont matter than we didnt finish fourth.

Would you really rather go out in straight sets?

Differences from 1998

The finals system
We don't have a team chock full of premiership players
We have over-achieved in reaching 5th rather than being a sleeping giant
We haven't actually beaten anyone this season
The top team is far, far better than us, rather than slightly better than us
There is another team who is significantly better than us
We are no better than any of the other 5 teams in the 8
We don't have a mastermind coach

Look, I'm all for optimism, and we are a good show to win this week. If we do so, we are a reasonable chance to win the following week. If we do that, we are very unlikely (but some chance) to win a prelim. And if we win that then, we are in a GF and who knows. I'm not saying we are categorically no chance, but it's no better than 1%. Tops.

Let's be optimistic and get behind the boys, but don't go around trying to say that it's written in the stars that this will be a repeat of 98. The two teams and seasons are totally different to one another, and we have already over achieved this season. We were always a premiership threat in 98.

Also, we didn't lose our leading goalscorer in 98 - that was Jarman. Modra got dropped, so it was obviously a decision that it was in the best interests of the team that he didn't play. Unlucky lad, to miss 2 premierships.
