Essendon Football Club today appointed former Adelaide Premiership player and captain Simon Goodwin as an assistant coach.

General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said Goodwin’s football knowledge and strong leadership skills will be of significant benefit to Essendon’s emerging playing group.

Why wouldn't you want someone of the calibre of Simon Goodwin on your coaching panel? A great leader, fantastic player who is straight out of the game, and a premiership player.

Playing for Essendon should have nothing to do with it.

I'd be pretty happy with this. Hird to learn the coaching craft as he goes and to take over as a full time senior coach in a few years.

Sorry to intrude. I think Goodwin will be a fantastic appointment for you guys. He has said openly for a long time that he has strong coaching aspirations, has a great understanding of the game and has spent a lot of time in the coaches box at Adelaide. Has been labelled the greatest Crows captain ever by Craig, a call most supporters found ridiculous considering Riccuito was our previous captain but his leadership abilities were most obvious when he was out of the side for the last quarter of the season and on field leadership fell away big time. Will be a very good pick up for Essendon - if you combine that with the possibility of having Williams, Hird and possibly Laidley and that is a very formidable looking coaches box.

I think you might find that a few of your maligned players under the ex coaching regime might have much better years. Not only is Goody an exceptional footy brain and a great leader, he is also from the coaches mouth (spoke directly to Craigy) an excellent manager of player welfare and concern. He was directly responsible for getting Bernie Vince to take his footy seriously and the evidence speaks for itself. (Had some injuries he carried this year).
