We have had a shitload of missed opportunities.

1993 losing to bombers at home then getting knocked out by them in 2nd week of finals.
1995 losing to Carlton at home.
1996 10 in a row, robbed of final.
1999 we were pretty s**t to be fair, we won the Bulldogs final for Mick and were properly cooked imo, but still should have played Carlton at home. Probably would have been destroyed by Essendon Next week.
2007 how do you lose two consecutive finals giving up leads we had?
2012 should have finished top 4, should have put Collingwood away.
2019 Willie, Willie, Willie. I really thought we had cats on toast. They were so rattled in Q3.

2007 we had Cousins tear his hammy vs Port when we were leading. That was on top of Kerr being out for the year and Judd having his groin issue.

None of them faced Collingwood, and Hansen goes down early in that match with injury.

That year the wheels fell off spectacularly

2016 we were in phenomenal form heading into the finals before getting rolled by the bulldogs (eventual premiers)

however this is just part and parcel of a finals system, it takes a mixture of talent and the stars aligning

In the AFL era we’ve won more flags than any club bar Geelong (who we’re equal with) and Hawthorn. That’s despite the massive disadvantages of being an interstate team.

It amazes me that people want to dwell on the ones we didn’t win.

Was the 1995 Carlton game the rushed behind scam?
No WCE v Carlton at Subi. One of the best games of footy you will see. If you can watch it, the result isn't great, obviously, but the football was wonderful. Bloody brutal, but that's not why I think it was so good. 2 elite sides.
Carlton got real belief after that game, with one of the best sides you'll ever see. Coach Parkin.
Koutagod, terrific.
Edit Kouta being torched by young Gehrig early and moved off him.
IIRC Gehrig was the next big hope...expectations by fans back then was kinda ridiculous/entitled.
Happy the G train eventuated after that.
Became a monster FF, but was a Hercules/Kouta prototype early days.
Introverted bloke, glad he got to his potential, unfortunately not our club

Sure, buts it’s also true we have a history of getting knocked out in 2nd week of finals when we should have gone further.

25+ years of finals, only 9 prelims.

Once we get to a prelim we have a bloody strong record 7W 2L.

We’re lucky to have had the success we’ve had. Doesn’t mean there aren’t ones that got away.

Our second week record is skewed a bit by how often we've played away from home. Winning interstate finals is pretty damn hard. Only 3 of our 14 semi finals have been at home and we've won 2 of them, lost to the Pies in extra time 2007.

Overall our finals record is pretty good, it's not helped by playing 34 away finals to just 19 home finals.

Home
14 wins 5 losses

Away
11 wins 22 losses 1 draw

Neutral
1 win 1 loss

To get to a prelim we essentially need to finish top 4 as we’ve never got there from outside the top 4. That’s mainly because the semi-final is an away game and against a top 4 side

We’ve finished top 4 on 12 occasions and only 3 of those years we’ve not made the prelim -

• 1988 when is was a top 5 finals series in a 14 team comp and we lost the elimination final to Melbourne by two points when Wrensted’s last ditch shot at goal on the run was off target
• 1996 when it was the old final 8 system and we thrashed Carlton (5th) at home but then had to play Essendon at the MCG even though they’d finished 6th and lost to Brisbane in week 1
• 2007 when we were crippled come finals and went out in straight sets courtesy of an overtime loss to Collingwood. It was also the year that a 4th quarter blitz from ****ing Scott Lucas saw us finish 3rd on percentage instead of 2nd meaning we played Port away in week 1 instead of at home

Our only prelim losses were -
• 1990 to Essendon which was our 4th consecutive away final due to the draw against Collingwood in week 1. That was on top of road trips to Brisbane and Geelong in the last 2 of the H&A season
• 2011 when we lost to eventual premiers Geelong after finishing 4th

Yes, this is my point. We have had so many top 4 near misses.

If Richmond are ninth-mond we are the fifth coast eagles.

Missed out on top 4 by per cent age in 1997, 2012,2019,2020 and arguably 2016 when we finished 6th and another 5th place in 1999. I think 5th is our most common finishing position.

In saying that there are worst things in the world.

5th - 7 times
6th - 2 times
7th - 3 times
8th - 2 times

He reckons he'll be in wafl for a couple of weeks, so more likely the Roos match?

Might line up against Norf at home then. That would be handy. Quick tune up and a week off to recover before vengeance against the Bombers and a home game against the Hawks.

There's a streak of games coming up that we should be up to our necks in.
