Anyone get this? I've had it once or twice, just small. Opened my eyes and saw my girlfriend next to me and i couldn't move my arms or legs. nothing else happened until i woke up and my girlfriend wasn't really there.

another time i got it from lying on my back for too long, i was dreaming of this weird cube what was a dice but it spun like a rubix cube, i opened my eyes and it started floating around my room and the 'zing' sounds and 'clickity' sounds it made sounded like they were real, like not in my head like a dream, but i could actually hear it. woke up and rolled over and went back to sleep

you can force this weird paralysis in your semi-conscious state by lying on your back when you're very tired. turn off your body, but keep your mind switched on. think of things, anything, even count backwards from 500-0. here's the trick though. you know that MASSIVE urge you get to roll over when you're tired or half asleep? force yourself to ignore it and stay on your back. this is the best way to force sleep paralysis but i would never try it personally because i get scared easily.

oh and also, i have heard from others it isn't recommended you try to get sleep paralysis unless you're ballsy as hell. the part of your brain that senses strong evil and fear goes crazy during sleep paralysis so when you open you're eyes you're likely to lie there unable to move and have a freaky monster sit on your chest and try to kill you (srs)

but occasionally people just see weird trippy things like the ceiling is melting.

i know i haven't explained this well but i tried

anyone else get sleep paralysis?

I had it for the first time about a year ago not knowing what it was. I had been dreaming that there was an A-Bomb dropped on the city. When I woke up there was this piercing sound ringing in my ear, I couldn't move and I thought a)I wasn't dreaming or b)there was something seriously wrong and I was going into a coma or something.

It happened a few other times after that where I'd wake up not able to move and again the ringing sound in my ears. For the first second or so it happened after the first time I was still a little freaked out but I wasn't overwhelmed.

Hasn't happened for about 8 or 9 months now and I'd prefer not for it to happen again.

I don't know if this is the same thing but I have woken up on a couple of occasions CONVINCED that there is a snake in my bed. I want to kick my legs up and remove the blanket but I am frozen. It takes a good minute or so before I come to my senses and have a laugh about it

A couple of years ago my brother asked me if I've ever been paralysed while sleeping because it happens to him sometimes. I told him that I've never experienced it and that hes a weirdo and is probably imagining things.

Then a couple of days later I woke suddenly during the middle of the night and I was paralysed. I couldnt move any limbs and I couldnt move my eyes either. Was just trapped there for ages until I somehow went back to sleep.

This happened once or so every week for a few weeks and it was really annoying. Then for some reason for a few times instead of waking up being paralysed, I would wake up just before it and I could feel that my body was about to get paralysed and I would fight it until I was able to move my limbs.

Since then this has never happened to me again. Was only reminded of it through this topic. Was pretty weird but now Im thinking it might happen again because ive been reintroduced to the topic and that its all mental.

Maybe it was just your heart stopping?

Or cataplexy:
a sudden muscular weakness brought on by strong emotions (though many people experience cataplexy without having an emotional trigger). Often manifesting as muscular weaknesses ranging from a barely perceptible slackening of the facial muscles to the dropping of the jaw or head, weakness at the knees, or a total collapse

You're paralysed during REM sleep, which is when you dream and is also the lightest stage of sleep. Hence, you can quite easily be aware that you're paralysed.

Happens to me frequently. Happens to anyone who often remembers their dreams.

I use to get this every few weeks, eventually it became so regular i learnt what was happening straight away, and could snap myself out of it pretty quick.

The only word that can describe it is terrifying - i remember a few times, i experimented with it, trying to stay in that state for as long as possible, however it truly feels your about to be attacked by a demon or something ultra evil.. and the only way to rid of it, is to snap out of it.

Very, very weird

Yeah this. It's pretty ****ing terrifying sometimes.

Also some times it's harder to wake than from others. I feel the best way is to just try and turn over really fast, usually uses a lot of will power and energy and sometimes takes what feels like an eternity but it usually eventually works.

The worst sleep experiences you can have IMO are wher you dream that you have woken up, and you do everything that you would normally do when you wake up, then when you get to work or whatever, you wake up again, and it keeps happening over and over until by the time you actually do wake up, you're not really sure if you're awake or whether you're still dreaming. When this mixes with lucid dreaming and you start waking yourself up deliberately trying to pull yourself from this dream state, it can get really terrifying.

Yeah i get a bit when I'm having WILDs (Wake Induced Lucid Dreams) and it doesn't reall bother me. You just have to stay calm and you can turn it into a dream.

Yeah I heard about this shit. I read up on it, looked interesting, but it seemed to much effort. Like you can control your dreams and all that. I think theres a thread about it somewhere on BF.

-snip-

I've actually experienced something very similar to this.

I was 12 years old and I randomly woke up in the middle of the night to the sight of a large cloaked black figure with a messy red face standing over my bed with 1 claw-like hand over my chest and one over my throat.
It looked like the Grim Reaper, with the long black cloak and hood over its head, except its face looked like it had been blown apart, all bloody red and scabby.

Needless to say, I was absolutely terrified, but I couldn't move any part of my body or talk (scream), I could only blink.
I noticed it was standing completely still, and only moved whenever I blinked, when it would turn into itself. Eventually it turned 'into itself' and disappeared.
I never knew what it was, or how I ever fell asleep again after seeing it, but years later I heard about the symptoms of sleep paralysis and made the connection.

At least I hope it was sleep paralysis. :p

I've normally been able to easily distinguish in my sleep the fact that I am asleep. I remember when I was about 8, during a nightmare I would regularly say to whoever was in my dream "do this" where I would be using my fingers to physically open my eyes and end my nightmare. From that point on whenever I had a nightmare I was never scared and would always enjoy the excitement factor of it. I've always remembered my dreams when I woke up and I can remember them for years if they are in fact a memorable dream, so I am usually quite with it and can easily distinguish what is a dream and what is real.

However about a year ago, I remember this clear as day and until I read this I have no idea what the hell happened. I woke up in the middle of the night which was nothing unusual. My bedroom goes around a corner from my bed, and around the corner I could see a shadow approaching. Finally I saw a head pop around the corner, it was the face of a clown. Of course I couldn't move or scream and I lay helplessly as this clown cautiously approached my bed, as if it were a child or animal and was curious as to what I was. Suffice to say by this stage I was terrified and it slowly lent down, covered my mouth and bit a chunk out of my neck, at that stage I "woke-up" shaking my head and pressuring where I thought I had been bitten as if I was trying to stop the bleeding. Was honestly the most real thing I have ever felt and absolutely terrifying.

all my dreams are continuous, like i'll wake up for a minute or so, then go back to sleep and the dream continues as if it was still playing when i woke up and didn't pause.

what's this called?

I used to always get that. If you don't want it to happen, when you wake up firstly, make sure you properly wake up, e.g go get a drink of water or browse the net for a few mins

I some times have dreams where i know that i am dreaming so i start doing crazy things like having sex with girls in my dream or beating people up and stealing cars.

wow, i have heard of sleep paralysis but i never knew it was like what some of you guys have described. I'm to scared to go to sleep tonight after reading all this it's probably going to happen to me :(

I first experienced sleep paralysis about 8 or 9 years ago and have had it occur probably 3 or 4 times a year ever since. It is an absolutely terrifying ordeal. As others have described, it basically involves waking up and finding yourself unable to move at all. After it happened the first time, I assumed that it was all part of a bad dream/nightmare, but it's not. You are genuinely awake, but it feels like your body is dead.

When it happens, I always try my hardest to fight it. It takes so much energy to even move my little finger, let alone grab the sheets, or roll over. It really does feel like something is holding you down fast, that's when the mind begins to panic. Each time I have experienced this, I have felt something menacing was in the house, I've never seen monsters or anything, probably because my eyes are closed, but I always get a clear and distinct feeling of dread. I feel that my life is in danger unless I can move my body and clear my head.

At this point I focus on either waking up myself, or trying to wake up someone else. Imagine being completely trapped under a large boulder and that's what it's like, but worse because you cannot cry for help. I exert so much energy trying to yell, but the best I can do is emit a pitiful kind of yelp through closed lips, and it takes ages just to manage that. I'm not sure how long, it's probably only a minute or two, but when you're terrified it feels like an hour. Eventually I'll feel a toe or a finger or something move and usually the rest of my body will wake up shortly after. It's always a magnificent relief when I can sit up and look around me and know that I am ok. The fact that I am familiar with this already does not make it any easier when it next occurs.

I can totally understand why people think something is holding them down and covering their mouth (as in the picture) because that is exactly what it feels like. Needless to say, I am not looking forward to my next episode. Very interested in reading these other experiences though.

Freaky, I had exactly the same thing happen to me last week.
