When writing about South Melbourne/Sydney from 1982 what are the naming conventions? I use Sydney from 1982 onwards but considering switching back to South Melbourne for that year based on news reports and Football Record that both call them South Melbourne.

At what point does Sydney become the official name, and was the name 'Swans' used at one point official or just for sake of convenience?

Gerard Sier had 3 daughters ( as per Herald Sun Tribute) no grandchildren named as such
*Just a minor correction Herald Sun Tribute has these dates ie DOD is 3 days out

SIER. - Gerard John. 4.6.1928 - 13.4.2006

Kenneth Sier also has a notice and again it seems he only had daughters.
Kenneths notice lists brother and sister as Gerard , John and Eileen and son of John and Norah.

Brother John does have sons according to his notice

Added: Kevin Sier is Father and Grandfather to Joseph and Brayden according to his notice

Ok

William Sayers married Catherine Ahern

1.Jonas Venes
1.1 John Jonas
1.2 Kenneth
1.3 Gerard

William Sayers Married Catherine Ahern

2.1 John
2.2 Daniel Joseph
2.3 Kevin Daniel
2.4 Joseph
2.5 Brayden

Does that make sense? ie they are cousins related through William and Catherine
Gerard Sier is my grandfather. He is listed at Richmond as Gerald which I have tried to rectify. No success.
Fitzroy were fantastic when I notified of his passing. Sent me the club song etc. Richmond couldn’t really care which was a shame.
Ken passed away in 2001 in Heidelberg.

I have Ken passing away on 23 Feb 2001 in Heidelberg.
Grandpa passed away 13 April 2006.
Jonas Venes Sier and Bridget McCristal had many children. John Jonus Sier was Ken, Gerard and John’s father. And Daniel Joseph Sier was his brother.

Hi Jake
I've updated my www.tigerlandarchive.org bios of Gerard and Ken to reflect that information.
I'll keep an eye out with Richmond and try to make sure they don't use Gerald in future.

Good to hear from you
Rhett

That is awesome!! Thanks so much.
I’m not sure if you know the history of him moving to Richmond.
He wanted to get married mid season. Norm Smith told him if he did he’d never play seniors again. He got married and was sent to the seconds. He got best on ground 3 matches in a row and Norm still refused to play him in the firsts. The boys grew up loving Fitzroy. It really hurt my grandfather to have to leave.
But Ken was at Richmond by then.
My grandpa played on his 21st Birthday for Fitzroy and against Richmond. He told me he was running down the flank and Dyer had him lined up. He bumped him but not enough to take him out. He mentioned it later at the party and Jack said he’d have felt terrible busting him up on his 21st.
Anyway I really appreciate your updates!

1981 was South Melbourne, 1982 was simply 'Swans', 1983 Sydney Swans.

It was absolutely official, check out some of the snipped articles I found on the newspapers.com BF account, as I too was recently searching for confirmation of this.

They wanted to remove the ambiguity of being called South Melbourne for Melbourne games and Sydney for Sydney games so they just decided to go with 'Swans' for a year. The Record and some TV games had the slightly different 'The Swans'

It feels like it was just up to publisher's discretion and they did whatever they wanted. For instance, the Record I listed above showed South Melbourne, this home record not surprisingly calls them the Sydney Swans and a Round 14 away game has 'Swans'

From 26 February - 12 May (pre-season through Round 7)
Still officially called South Melbourne, but leaning towards the use of simply nicknames

702268

From 13 May - 2 June (Round 8 through Round 11)
'Quietly educating the media' that the club should be known simply as the Swans (formally "Swans", akin to the Kangaroos '99-'07 being "Kangaroos"). This is to reduce confusion and ambiguity in the two markets they are based. This is not yet an official name change however.

702272

From 3 June onwards (Round 12 through Round 22/post-season)
South Melbourne Football Club officially renamed to the Swans.

702277

I would suggest given the they were Swans officially for half a season and unofficially for another quarter, then going with 'Swans' for 1982 is the best way to go. It might not mean much but Wikipedia adopted that convention a few years back too, and their reference was an old Full Points Footy article (John Devaney being very well-researched in that sort of stuff).

As an aside, the AGM where the club voted to change the business name from South Melbourne Club Limited (which itself was an amalgamation of the South Melbourne Football and Cricket clubs, that occurred on 4 February 1980) to Sydney Swans Limited was held on 15 September 1983.

Thanks for this, appreciate the deep dive. Am certainly going back to South for Round 1, 1982 and likely Swans for our second game against them that year and all of '83.

Norm Johnstone played with Dan Murray who fathered Kevin (Brownlow medalist) making him one of the few (I imagine) to play with a father and son.

Who else has achieved this?

I know that Dustin Fletcher played with Tim and Jobe Watson and that Peter Riccardi played alongside the Ablett’s.

Due to Ted Whitten having a 20 year career, players such as Laurie Sandilands, Gary Dempsey, Barry Round, Gordon Casey and Bernie Quinlan played with both Ted senior and Ted junior.

Of that group Dempsey, Round and Quinlan would have played with Ted Snr and against Ted Jnr (as well as with Jnr), which is probably even more exclusive.

Michael Tuck played with Peter and Paul Hudson. Bruce Doull would have played with both Serg and Steve Silvagni.

A bit more obscure from a wiki article - Tom Kavanagh, who played 2 games for Melbourne in 1988, is the son of Brent Croswell. That would put players such as Alan Johnson, Brian Wilson and Chris Connolly in the right time frame to have played with both.

what happened to Campbell's Creek FC last week?
have they finished?
https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.a...g-for-campbells-creek-up-for-the-fight/?cs=81 (July 24 2019)

"We have a proud history and it's just so worth fighting for" - Campbells Creek up for the fight

CAMPBELLS Creek president Scott Jones struggled to get the words out last Thursday night as he stood up in the clubrooms to deliver the Magpies' decision to forfeit their upcoming senior and reserves games.

The Magpies' lack of committed numbers finally reached its tipping point last weekend when the combination of 31 injuries and nine unavailabilities forced the club to make the tough call to withdraw its senior and reserves teams from its away games against Talbot in the Maryborough-Castlemaine District league.

"Last Thursday night, having to stand up in front of the whole club and say we wouldn't be going ahead with seniors and reserves was the toughest thing I've had to do," Jones said on Wednesday.

"Marg (Stevens, secretary) was in tears, so that's how much we're invested into the club... it has become personal.

"It's very tough, but we're busting our backsides behind the scenes."

There would be a few who played with Syd Barker Snr (Last Senior Game in 1927) and Syd Barker Jnr (First Game 1930)

How long has the ball been dead when it hit the post? I thought it was an ancient rule, but this from Round 6, 1966 suggests you used to be able to play on off the post.

I understand why your reading of that piece might hint at "play on" having occurred, but I think it was simply that Tuddy followed through with a natural reaction to the ball coming back to him.

The goals/behinds list from the match shows Tuddenham with 0.2, so the ball was declared "dead" at the time.
