I read Smarty's column in the paper this am. He seems pretty philsophical about his omission and obviously disappointed. I detected between the lines that he might be thinking his days are numbered even though he certainly does not appear to be giving up getting a recall. Maybe I read it wrong, what do others think?

I am begining to think at best it will be 50-50 if gets back in the next few weeks and then if he doesn't whether he will still be happy to be out getting a kick with the Panthers. I noticed he wasn't in the best players and didnt get a mention in the write up [apart from kicking 0-1] so I am thinking thats maybe not a good sign for him.

I certainly was hoping his career wouldnt end up like this, [I know its still early days] and still hold out some hope that he still might get through the season and be back in the side and can hold his place till the end.

He should have retired last year while he was still playing okay, even if that retirement was an "encouraged" one by the club.

That would have been better for both club (salary cap relief to draft Surjans and one other youngster) and the public perception of the player.

I'm sure he will play again at sometime this year, but it's more likely to be as a fill in role for injuries rather than as a core member of the side.

Definitely one year too long sadly.

From what Go South told me - it doesn't sound like Smarty is setting the world on fire down at Noarlunga. I would have thought the calibre of player that Smarty is and with the right attitude it wouldn't be long before he gets back into the Crows side.

I can't see any point in AFC playing Smart ahead of a younger player unless he playing awesome football for South. Could be a sad way of ending an illustrious career.

suprising though....without Benny Hart aswell, we have a pretty young and inexperienced backline - I would have thought Smarty could add something in Ben's abscence.

Thought there was good leadership today for Bassett & Massie. Kenny played well on Graham when moved back & Begley was OK (apart from that shocking kick-in). It was Edwards & Macca who were ordinary in the back-half.

Benny should be back next week.

As much a fan of Nigel's as i am he should have retired last year (in hindsight) might still have something to offer this year if by some stroke of luck/miracle we manage to make the finals.

I think i'll think twice about driving down the Geelong freeway again - wet, windy and demoralising.
Anyway, Kenny was very ordinary all day, Graham is able to play poorly or be held, without the need to have an opponent:p

It must be very hard to play well for South when your homeground is Pleurisy Park. Nobody can play good football there.

Even though it appeared as if he didn't have a man in the first half against Glenelg I thought he was amongst their best that day.

I would play Smart this week

Its the sort of game he will really fire up for.

It would be a real shame for him to finish his career in the SANFL. He has been a real champion of the AFC.

Plus I love the fact he gets up the noses of Port supporters in particular.

I think Port fans just think he's funny.

Mind you he doesn't need to play to achieve this! ;)

If he gets up my, or any other supporter's, nose is irrelevant, the fact remains that the Port Power players are accustomed to beating Smart, or any other Crow defender, of late, resulting in Port's string of wins.

THAT is all us supporters are ultimately concerned with, winning or losing, and winning craps all over losing.

You should go on Mastermind.

Just trying to help Jars, I was guessing that maybe the Crow people had developed the same malady as the Crow (non) performers, "unable to see the bleeding obvious".

Watching the Crows play, at the minute, may well be worse than attending the dentist, both alternate between hitting a nerve or being plain boring

Chris, shouldn't you be off watching a re-run of that Walter Matau (sp?) movie, as I'm sure that would be more interesting & less painful for you! ;) :p

Personally I dont think he should return both he and Burns should retire now, holding up the place of a couple of good kids...............Now say if one or both did retire can the AFC promote Parker off the rookie list?????

Yes. If both retired we could promote 2 rookies but the only question could be if we could afford it. If they retire prematurely we would still have to pay out their contracts.

Ohh yeah that woud be a problem, I really want to see Parker play and if Smart had a of retired like he should of last year he would be having a go it's a real disapointment for Aidan

Don't believe that is the case, Stiffy. As it is the player's decision to break the contract. That is why virtually no player will retire "voluntarily".

Most players that have retired mid-season have come to some financial arrangement with the club. (It is in the club's interest to at least pay some, it will be less than if the player doesn't retire) And as you stated, it frees up a spot for a rookie.

Parker is struggling to stay in the league team at South. Hazell will be the first one promoted, imo.

On current form it couldn't be Parker.

As you say, Hazell is the one that deserves to go onto the list on current form. A very neat player, that boy.

Andrews is developing nicely and barring any setbacks would be a certainty to go onto the main list at the end of the year.
