Phantom Draft Snoops Annual Mock Draft with explanations

Really happy with that draft until you got to Davies. If there's one thing on our list there's an abundance of it's running HB's, they've all got pretty good disposal too so that rules out Davies for me.

Swap him with Luff though and it'd be just about perfect for Freo. I'd be stoked to get Mora and Sheppard with our first two picks.

Fair call - but this one is really hard at it

top effort snoop, best crack at a draft yet!

i'd be stoked if the pies were able to snare beams with their last pick and even temel with their second last pick, he seems to have upside and he could be developed into a gun fwd if things fall his way. i really hope we get a good one at pick 30.

i think we will - its short odds a number that I have going between 1-29 will fall so they might the ones. Bartlett, Fitzpatrick, Hutchings, weedon, Bastinac, Crichton, Sheppard, Taylor, Griffiths are all ones I think are most likely to slip........but not past 45.

i really like your draft its great but wondering if essendon would really let cunnington slip or even lucas and tapscott.

also wondering why we would pass up on gysberts?

but apart from that well done

obviously it was close but I had Moore just in front. Nothing really seperates those two so it was just a personal view.

Hi Snoop

Another I rate very high is Anthony Delborello from West Perth
No one has even mentioned him. I expect his name to be called up. Again I hope its Brisbane. The Lions need to develop some strong clearance ball winners now and in preparation for the future. I see Delborello going very high in this draft. He reminds me of Jack Redden. It won't hurt to have two on our list. The closer it gets to ND day the higher his value will rise.

Do you have an oppinion on Delborello?

This is the write up I had done for him. I had him at #47 for you blokes actually but bc I just havent seen enough of him I didnt feel confident putting him in;

Anthony Delborello / West Perth / 181cm / 78kg
To be fair I have seen very little of this kid so its a bit speculative but have heard enough from those that have seen him to believe he has good potential. Skinny fella and only played 6 colts games I think but played for WA in the champs. Wasn’t a standout but what he did do was show an ability to be a good reader of the play, win the ball in a contest, make very good decisions and execute well. The knock is he needs to get more of it than he has to date. Another who excelled at the kicking test at camp. I think he is a wing / HB type but could also develop as Back pocket type where his kicking from defence would be very handy.

Do you think Gerrick Weedon is a genuine forward pocket? And do you think 22/23 would be too early for him? Would much rather take Melksham/Lucas at 7 and the forward pocket at 22/23.

I think he could def start as a fwd pkt and work his way up the flank. He was slotted at # 23 originally but I went a bit more needs based for WCE and hit Taylor. Ps Also had him at #30 for a while but he is better than that so yeah the 20-30 range if I had to pick it.

Good read and its nice to see some difference in opinion than the usual cookie cutter drafts you see painted over the place.

Personally i think from a power perspective we're more in need of fine tuning our midfield and passing up Lucas and Cunnington would be foolhearty. Especially as i see Panos at least definately still being available at 16. I'd be stoked with a Cunnington/Lucas/Panos trio :)

fair call

to be fair i had Talia at 8 always and then it was between Cunnington and Panos. Went with panos bc i dont think he will last to 16 (just my view) and hence their need for a kpf was to high to risk. at #16 quality mids will be there like Tapscott, Stevens etc.

I don't believe for an instance the bullshit about this draft being shallow. This is a very even and deep draft. Talent all the way into the mid fifties if you look hard enough, IMO. There are some hidden gems in this draft. Weedon, Delborello, Fyfe etc... IMO have the potential to make it.
I also like Fyfe for Brisbane. He is the perfect replacement for Hooper. Has that X factor that will excite if he develops his potential. I'm not sure if you had Fyfe in your mock?

#37 to North Melbourne. At times had him at #20 onwards. Massive x factor and SJ like in many ways. Needs to fill out but yep a heap of upside.

People say its shallow but it just tapers off in quality. As I said somewhere you could throw a blanket over the kids from 30-100. There will be a lot of gems in there.

Hi Snoop, interesting read. Do you think clubs will place less importance on athletic ability this year than they did last year?

I know i am Ranges bias, but I can't see Kennedy dropping that far. I did a bit of research and based on draft camp results from last year he should go higher. From last year there were 5 players that scored in the top 10 of 3 or more of the following tests, Agility, 20m Sprint, Verticle, Beep & 3km, Watts (#1), Hill (#3), Shuey (#18), Swift (#20) and Hannebery (#30). This year those that were in the top 10 for 3 or more are Lucas, Reid, Colyer, Hooper, Shaw & Kennedy.

Your thoughts?

fair call - was hard with Adelaide bc I thought your list was very good. Craig is certainly worth # 29

Don't sweat it man :p You're right, on exposed AFL form, we need some extra tall depth, which is why we recruited that last season. It's very easy to miss our first year talls since you basically wouldn't know of them unless you follow the Crows closely.

You made the correct assumption, just one year late :p Just like last year when everyone ragged on the Crows for picking up talls when we desperately needed fast mids, not realising we almost solely recruited them the year prior.

A speedy small forward and a class ruck are still holes on our list though. We have both positions filled at the moment by workmanlike players.

Nice draft but it wouldn't surprise me if Melbourne took Tapscott and Carlislt at 11&18 and held out for Max Gawn or Fitzpatrick at 34

Great effort Snoop.I like the way your thinking in regards to Richmond.IMO we have Griffiths pencilled in @ 19.If he,s gone i think we will go small,as for another tall @ 19[Apart from maybe Fitzpatrick] we would be reaching to high on others.
Like you have done.We can load up later with Talls.
I doubt we,ll go for Christenson or Hooper as we have Farmer[ex port] aswell as looking at Tutt later on.

Great effort well done:thumbsu:

Another good effort Snoop-dog, what are your thoughts on Jay Shannon SA as i have been veiwing alot of the you tube videos and he still looks like a afl candidate, you were pretty keen on him last year, however he did not get picked up, watched him a couple of time this year playing league for port magpies, seem to go well, like what he does of the ball to protect his team mates, you see that in his 2008 National Championship video do you think hes gone under the radar or do you think he is just not afl material, - value your and anyone else's opinion.

Excellent work Snoop always look forward to it. Interesting you have a lot of talls going in the first round.

Just a heads up, the bulldogs said they will use pick 79 in the draft and I would love to nab Thompson at that pick.

yeah am goign to update it on final selection and when I know which AFL players have nominated.

Appreciate the comments to - thought you did a very good job yourself.

Fantastic effort Snoop. Must have taken you some serious hours to compile all of that. From a Carlton perspective, it's actually a good change that someone has a different player at #12 other than Talia.

HBF - good to hear from you. Always use to love reading yours. What are the hopes for Carlton.

Which of Black, Griffiths, Panos, Talia, Fitzpatrick .....if at all you hoping for at # 12

Good job Snoop. Not an easy thing to do.

I think you'll get some surprises come draft day, but thats the nature of this draft - it will prove to be very unpredictable from very early on.

Thank you - was difficult this year for exactly the reason you have outlined.

In past years I probably ave around 45 of the top 50 going....ie aint that hard to pick who will go just where.

This year it is really hard to think about even who will go from say 30 onwards. Guys like McAdam who I didnt end up placing could go very highly bc he could be just what a club is looking for.

The defensive talls were the same - v hard to split guys like Luff, Donaldson, Busher, Dare, Roberton, Thompson etc.

Tall fwds werent to hard until the back end eg Houghton, McDOnald, Archer, Daly, Bevan etc

Rucks were the same. Fitzy, Gawn and Vardy are standouts but the next few like Hannath, Milne, Hayward, Jones etc are all very close and i suspect different clubs will see them differently.

A heap of inside mids are in the draft so outside the top 10 of those hard to place and easy to see some slipping. Harwood, Hutchings, Crichton, McNeil all players that could slip.

Another group were the taller utility types Moore, Kennedy, Gysberts, Reid etc

Be interested in your rankings / views on some of the above and anybody you think might get taken.

Always the best mock draft for mine...and this years is no exception.

If anything, I enjoyed this one the most because it is such an even field with no standouts, so nobody is even going to get close to picking the right order.

But the good mock drafts have the best analysis and the best descriptions with good reasoning. It is an objective excercise, so you can never tell what a recruiter is going to think. But the name of the game is spreading the info in a rational and thought out method. And I know your drafts come with real observations and not internet observations.

Good to see someone still back in Butcher...although I do think you may have Cunnington a bit low. But thank god someone is mixing it up a bit.

Collingwood's picks are complete mysteries and I have no idea which way we'll go. I think your selection is reasonable.

Ripper work once again.
The Phantom Draft I most look forward to every year.

I think you have got us filling every hole that needs to be.
Would be over the moon with at least Morabito , who I think is a lock for us , with Sheppard & Houghton.
All others are a bonus though have heard big wraps on Fyfe so if we could manage to grab him as well the picture will be complete.

Cheers.

mate he is another that i just couldnt understand why they didnt get taken, Guys like Dean Kelly still burn in my memory (didnt even get rookied);

Shannon should have gone last year but it was a strong draft so he would be in the mix this year in a weaker one. I have him around the 75-115 player mark so was in the mix. The issue is going to be his pace and the fact there are a heap of inside mids in this years pool. I suspect he may get rookied.but The Sewell boys will be a terrific role model for inside mids insomuch as they will still be drafted as 21yos once they have filled out as they need to grow physically whereas the outside types like Hill can play an outside role straight away.

Hope that all makes sense........

Ps Matty Wright is in the mix for me as well!
