Well, i've just finished watching the Hotter than Hell video of our 1998 season run to the finals, after finishing bottom in 1997. It got me thinking could the same thing happen next year, and how many similarites we have between then and now.

Some of the catalysts in 1998 (and some of the potential similar ones in 2009)

A new captain, who is strong bustling midfielder - Todd Viney (Brock Mclean?)
The return of a strong bustling injury prone midfielder - Stephen Tingay (Brett Moloney/Colin Syvia??)
The recruit of a young Fremantle ruckman - Jeff White (Robert Warnock?)
A new president - Joseph Gutnick (Jim Stynes)
The return of an injury prone star - David Schwarz (Jared Rivers?)
The brilliance of a young Aboriginal forward - Jeff Farmer (Aaron Davey/Austin Wonaemirri)
The sublime skills of young midfielder with an oddly spelt common first name - Adem Yze (Addam Maric)
A veteran running half back flanker - Steven Febey (Matthew Whelan/Brad Green?)
The coming of age of an enigmatic young spring heeled forward - Russell Robertson (Michael Newton)
A strong leading forward and a leader - Garry Lyon (Brad Miller)
Another strong leading forward - David Neitz (Matthew Bate)
A dashing young left foot half backflanker - Shane Woewodin (Chris Johnson)
A young extremely talented and skilled #1 pick - Travis Johnstone (Daniel Rich/Jack Watts?)

Just something to think about and shows that anything can happen...

Everything looked kind of the same until you got to the forward line :D

Agreed, the main reason we wre good in 98 was our potent forward line. Both Nieta would of been 23 in 98 perfect age to start tearing games apart. Gaz was a legendand altho not in the best nick was still a smart player. Nor miller or bate have the runs on the board like lyon and nieta did in 98.

Altho there are few simlarities you mention, i like your optism but isuspect gettin out of the bottom 4 would be a good acheivement next year.

Great post, its nice to see some optimism.

I think we are starting to build a foundation for the future, but we still need a few more players in certain positions, as well as the continued development of our list.

Good work!

I remember saying at the end of 97 that we will be up there for the flag in 1998 & we were.

Except some how The crows get a double chance (Even though they finished 5th from memory because all the top 4 teams won they had to stay as the highest loser) after a 10 goal demolition by us & we went close to the final day in September.

Dare I say it?

Melbourne for premiers 2009.

I must say I'm not quite as confident as I was then.
