I wouldn't say I hate similar styles but it does depend on how I connect with the song. I really like progressive rock (Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus). Post-rock is also good.
As for Northlane, there's something about them. The lead singer Marcus Bridge had a tough childhood (both his parents did drugs and they moved around a lot). So a lot of what he sings is about his family and those struggles. The meaning in the lyrics gets me. I also like the balance, there's EDM beats alongside the metal and Marcus doesn't always growl/scream.
Older Northlane with the previous lead singer Adrian I don't like as much.

Slipknot has some very deep songs.
