Just wondering what songs people will still listen to 20 years after coming out. I have this belief that modern songs, post 2000 are becoming less and less likely to become songs played in the future. It seems to me that many songs will just fade away into non existence.

I reckon some of Coldplay's earlier stuff will, Bitter sweet Symphony, John Legend, Bruno Mars maybe.

What do you think.

Also as much as I despise it, Uptown Funk will probably be one that lasts a long time. Beyonce's Crazy in Love is another one that will still get played in years to come.

I'm thinking the songs with lyrics like

"I'm on top of the world"
"gonna be the best day of my life"

Happy, or songs that can be used in future commercials, broadcasts or whatever

All The Single Ladies has become an anthem too.

Too early to tell if Shake it Off and Blank Space will too, but they've got all the ingredients

Hey Ya still sounds like it could have come out yesterday, it's over a decade old.. So far ahead of its time it's mind boggling.

Somebody That I Used To Know will be an Aussie staple for a long time.

Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out is a classic and I can't see that changing

for more top 40 pop...

Britney Spears - Toxic, Daft Punk - Get Lucky and Coldplay - Viva la Vida

JEEEEEEEEEAAALOUSY TURNING SAINTS INTO THE SEA.

Nah, too many to count. There's plenty of awesome stuff being churned out now I tried making a list and ten songs later, I realised it was totally pointless.

OP makes good points though when I think about it. Everything recently it's extremely recycled and watered down. Some old beats with the same old lyrics. Sometimes the retro sound is lost even on the performers, and sans irony.

It's not just pop music though, classical music is so stale at the moment, jazz musicians still turn out Coltrane and Davis covers and that's about all. I'm trying to get into Eastern music, especially kind of ancient stuff that has a gong or something but whilst I love the traditional work, it's not doing much for me.

I think I'll give up music for a New Year's Eve resolution.

Honestly....

Blame video games....

People traded in their Telecasters/jags with stickers for a PlayStation, simple as that...

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but that is why music is in the state it's in.

That and all the A&R guys are only interested in marketing and not the music anymore..

Simple stuff..

Tragic, kind of, but at least video games are a newish kind of art and hobby...
