I didn't even know he was out of contract; I thought there would have been a bit more noise around that. Anyway, great news. I think the vote into the leadership group probably helped to make his decision a bit easier.

Edit: Just realised he was contracted until the end of 2018. Anyway, one less free agent to not have to worry about next for a few years.

He wasn't out of contract.

He's signed a two year extension yet is signed until 2020. I'll let you work that out.

Touch surprised tbh. Not that he re-signed - that was almost a formality. More that I would've thought the club would be looking at re-signing a couple of OOC guys first. I'm not expecting to hear about Fyfe until mid season tbh but there's 4-5 others I really signed up including a few young Victorians.

I assume the vast majority of players on our list want to stay and sign new contracts.
In this context timing becomes far less significant than many,particularly media hyperventilators, want to make it.
Sonny signing a 2 year extension on top of his current 2018 contract is hardly the behaviour of someone willing to listen to other offers.

That's curious?

I would have thought he could get "better offers" if he put himself on the open market. Most good players can as clubs in different stages of development find money for A graders. Also don't see why someone who is open to leaving would resign when he is still contracted for the following season.

Anyway, I am sure there is a bubble of happiness over Cockburn this morning.

In reality though the trade was worth very different things for both teams.

For GWS they effectively got a top 3 pick for McCarthy. All other picks would've been used towards bidding towards their academy players who they would've got anyway. The extra picks were worth nothing for them.

For Freo it was pick 3 for five pick downgrade, potential 10 year KPF, late second rounder which eventually was used on a premiership KPD and a fourth rounder used on one of the best mature agers in the draft.

Genuine win-win trade IMO. In effect GWS actually got quite a bit for McCarthy even though the trade looked lopsided in our favour on paper.
