I've said it before, I'll say it again, SOS used his body and his arms in such ways that limited his opponents strengths, and playing in an era of monster forwards (Lockett, Dunstall, etc) he needed to. To say he got away with murder is just plain stupid, there were as many cameras back then as there are now, and if the umpires didnt say or pay anything, commentators didnt say anything, the AFL didnt say anything, its safe to say that SOS was just a brilliant full-back in an era of champions.

OK, you've got me there, I didn't realise the umpires never make any mistakes, or play favourites.

Lloyd loved him.

Even though they actually rarely played on each other (Manton did all the work), that's their business.

In fact, the supposed "Lloyd has the wood on SoS" is nothing but a myth. I'll see if I can dig up that post which mentions Carl/Ess games with them being on the same field.

As for the wrestling stuff, big deal. Every good full back does it, all of them scrag. Even last year the top FBs got away with it, but "scragging" certainly wasn't the only weapon in Silvagni's arsenal.

Lloyd loved him. Manton did very well on Lloyd however.

How could a proven cheat ever qualify as a "scrupulously fair player"?

Spot on JD... What really irks me is that this "proven" cheat has twice the premierships to his name than our entire and immensely proud football club does. It just isnt fair!

How he got fullback in the team of the century still has me baffled, because he was not even the best FB of his time.

Langford, Southby >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Silvagni.

Langford was regularly beaten by Kernahan, Ablett, Lockett etc. So how about you take your hand off it and give it a rest:cool:

Langford was a very good player, in a team that won several flags ; but as the guy who started this thread, I'd rate Silvagni ahead of him. (Likewise Martyn, Dunkley, Fletcher, Scarlett, etc).

My reservations are
(a) I don't rate him ahead of Dench & Southby (Dench in particular, who was a great attacking full-back).................I can't comment on Reagan, and for the same reason, I wonder if those who are adamant SOS is the best-ever had the chance to see Dench & Southby in action

and (b) I reckon he was a wrestler who would have struggled if the rules were applied sensibly.

Wrestling cheater.

Never watched a game of football have you?

Kernahan was owned by Langford. He was his bee-yach.

Ablett, Lockett? Had their days but Langers had more. Carey was the only player who got Langers more than Langers got him. That being said, even that was towards the end of Langford's career and when he had to play out at CHB becuase of no other options, rather in the fullback position.

If you're going to post, don't just make it up for god's sake.

Hey, numb nuts. I watched Kernahan beat Langford in the 80's and 90's from the Carlton Social Club. I didn't listen to the games on my clock radio in my bedroom like you did.

At times Langford had the better of Stick when the Hawks managed to shut down the supply to the forward line. At best it was a 50/50 split. Definately not Langford's bee-yach. You need to buy some videos of the 1980's and 1990's because your brain is warped.

Langers did own Sticks. This is fact Aussie Joe. Go out and buy Captain Kernahan (a great video by the way) and he will tell you this himself. Must have beasten him 90% of the time. Even great players have their nemisis. So the Miner has hit gold with this call!:D

Love how the Hawk fan nominates Langford, then the Kangas fan comes in and says Dench. The Blues fan sticks up for SOS. Can we see a pattern occuring here.

The beauty is that the Fullback of the Century has been awarded. And guess what....a legend from all of your clubs was probably on the panel choosing. The looked...they debated.....the threw up some names.

Stephen Silvagni!:thumbsu: :p :) :D  ;)

The only thing good about having to cop Dunne pa-trolling the Carlton topics are your great comebacks QC. You own him. No matter what, the premiership and spoon count hits home well. Keep up the good work.

Firstly Peckerhead, if you can't post without name calling don't bother. It only highlights that you were the little ********er listening to the game from your bedroom.

I was a Hawk member myself back in the 80s (as I still am) and watched the boys play on a weekly basis from the Heatley stand (if memory serves). Kernahan rarely got the better of Langord and you'll find Kernahan himself has admitted that Chris was his toughest opponent who most often did him in.

PS - own a lot of videos from the 80s. We had a rather successful era you know. In fact, I believe we were dominant - a bit like Chris Langford.

NUMB NUTS.

Nice post Moss Rocket. I can admitted Carey got Langers and I appreciate a Carlton fan who can admit Kernahan was done by Langers.

Of course every club nominates their own player, they see so much more of them for a start. In the end SOS got the TOTC position so good luck to him. I would never say he wasn't a champion player but I still disagree with the decision.

Although it was voted on by experts, they are still all opinions. A different panel, a different decision?? Maybe but perhaps not.

Thanks for the post though and nice chatting sensibly without vitriol.:D
