Yes, we all descended from apes. Unfortunately, there is a very long and ugly history of people claiming that various ethnic groups (be it Africans, Asians, or whoever else) diverged from Europeans at some point in the distant past, and hence missed some vital evolutionary steps that render those certain ethnic groups subhuman by comparison. This has been used as justification for the systemic abuse, dispossession, and conquest of various ethnic groups throughout history, and still persists to this day as a way of demeaning or dehumanising people. If you've never heard of it, that's great, but I assure you it exists.

Yep that's what muddies the waters here.

With Tex's slur there was a bonafide victim who was the target and a hurt party.

The player Rankine said what he said to, was not offended. So with this instance, there is no tangible victim apart from 'the community', who would have never even been aware of this had it not been made public.

I do agree with this last part. I kind of wish the AFL had kept this in house. The community and fans are let down by knowing this. I understand there's punishment to acknowledge this sort of behaviour is unacceptable, but public prosecution and the toll that it will take on Rankine's mental health as well could've been avoided. I want him to understand it's wrong, it's hurtful and never do it again, not in public and not in private. I don't want him to be publicly shamed, booed, taunted, abused by the media, other fans or Crows fans. What would that resolve?

I know Crows fans that are part of the LGBTQ community are absolutely devastated, upset, angry and may not look at Rankine ever the same again. I wonder what they feel the appropriate punishment should be? I would want Rankine to go through more education on the use of these words and how hurtful they can be, because you never know who is listening. He could have a teammate with a sibling, family or friend that is part of the community. At least a quarter of the AFLW Crows team is part of that community. Chelsea Randall has done talks with the men's side. Every club should be having these education talks as it seems sledging is the norm in AFL games and some people grow up hearing/using these words without realising how hurtful the use is.

Anyway, I felt really demoralised when this came out. He's one of my favourite players to watch. He's let down his community, his fans, his club. He knows this too and I don't want him missing a huge chunk of games to prove that he understands what he said was wrong. I also understand the AFL think massive suspensions is the way to go and he will most likely cop 3-5 weeks as suggested by media.

I really hope the AFL review this line of punishment in the off-season. Even in the NBA, homophobic language incurs financial penalties, and this is a game where taunting is banned. Taunting and sledging is the norm in AFL.
