Quick staw poll.

How many spoons will be brought to the MCG tonight.

My prediction: 28,562.

No, make that 28,563 - I found another one!:D

I think it is just begging for trouble to bring these spoons, I guarantee that if anyone waves anything in my face like a spoon at the game, I'll be waving a very fast moving fist into theirs.

At the pub beforehand, fair enough, it's a few laughs. But at the game. hanging sh#t on, you're looking for trouble believe me.

Yeah go on morons. One hundred and five years of resentment and hatred, get it out of your system. Go on, you'll feel so much better. Give it your best shot because Christ knows you won't get the chance again for a long, long time!

No offence, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Carlton finish last again next season either.

Bee, I'm not going to have a go at you here, because I honestly like what you bring to the boards here, and I enjoy reading your posts and respect what you oftentimes have to say.

However, I think you summed up why people despise Carlton. It's the whole "we're Carlton, we win premierships, not wooden spoons" type of arrogance that rubs people the wrong way.

They deserve their wooden spoon this season, and whether it happens again in the near future is completely open to debate. But I'm sure that even Blues fans will confess as to why it's happened this year-- for example, that the team hasn't changed its personnel at the same rate that their competition has...

Like you said, tough times never last all that long. But having said that, I'm sure a vast majority of non-Carlton fans are revelling in the Blues' misfortunes this season.

Cheers,
William

Collingwood are belting Carlton with a wooden spoon here.
Collingwood - 2.3.15 - 1.1.7 Carlton - Dunlop, Super-dealers scoreboard. 43,097 people through the turn-style.

Don't get me wrong I am a major footy fan but I can't understand why people would want to take wooden spoons to the game to try and get a bite out of us Carlton supporters.

Even if my most disliked team was on the bottom of the ladder I certainly wouldn't waste my time shoving a wooden spoon in their supporters face.

Really what does it even prove?!?!

We deserve it, do we?
Why is that, because we have avoided it for 105 years?
Because we have won 16 premierships?
Because we have a "winning culture"?
Because we are arrogant?

BTW I have seen many teams finish last through the years and not once have I taken a wooden spoon to the match to taunt the supporters with.

Actually, you deserve it because of your repeated failure to see the writing on the wall and recruit for the future.

Nice to be quoted out of context, Bee. ;)

Anyhoo...

If you take a look at the 2002 ladder, and see that Carlton are bottom of it, that is reason enough explaining why they "deserve" the wooden spoon.

An abstract reason, yes-- but that is it, plain and simple. Two wins in 17 games this season, and getting flogged badly by the club's most traditional rival... that just about sums it up. And I'm being 100% objective here (I support neither Carlton nor Collingwood).

Fans of my team and others will certainly cite the other reasons-- those of arrogance, tradition, whatever you want to call it. But let me say that every dog has its day. This just happens to belong to the Blues. It's not permanent, mind you, but that's just the way it goes.

Believe me, my brother-in-law (the lone member of Jennifer's side of a Geelong-supporting family that barracks for Carlton), Jen and I can't give him enough grief this season. And given the Blues' level of success over the years, we know that this might be our only chance to stick it to him and his team to the degree in which we're doing it. Tonight's game is a classic example-- and we're only at halftime here.

Having said all that, though, I think it's quite a bit over-the-top taking actual wooden spoons from Cole's, Safeway, or wherever, to the game itself. Not only does it smack of bush-league proportions of attitudes, but it poses obvious safety hazards as well.

Cheers,
William

Because your current team is crap.

Fair enough. Finishing last means you get the wooden spoon. And yes in that context Carlton certainly deserve it.

Okay. We are not used to being in this position and it is hard to take. In the last couple of days I have been told by a few people that I should stop sooking and finally realise what it feels like to be on the losing end. To realise what it feels like to be down. Not just for one season, but to be on the end of it for years.
Ummm, no thanks. This season is bad enough. It can't end soon enough as far as I am concerned. I don't think I can take much more.

Please don't remind me about tonight's game. I have sort solitude in here, because my "carlton hating" partner is giving me the absolute shi*s about the game.

Taking the spoons is right. You can bet if they are Collingwood supporters they left the store without paying for them. ;) :D

Bee, we do deserve it. Ever since we lost aginst the saints in Round 16, and the record belting we received from Collingwood further proves the point. Stuff this season... there is always next year.

And to the people who think we'll get the wooden spoon next year - why? What happens if we have all our top players fully fit and in form, with an injury free season? Do not forget draft picks and a better coach. Unless we get the same injury run and coach, you're delusional. CowBoyFromHell... I don't think this bad luck could drag into another year, seriously? Once we get Allan, Ratten, Hulme and Whitnall back, we'll actually put up a fight. Do not forget Kouta, the draft picks, and our current first year players, for they will be more bulked up and have a year of experience. Add that with MAYBE Pagan, you have a good team there. If we at least play with confidence, displince and motivation next year, it'll be alright. Those three words have been lacking this year. Oh yeah, and skill too.

Please let me think of postivies for next year. I'm sick and tired of the negatives right now. Next year, next year... we will return, as all good clubs do.

You'd be well qualified to talk about teams finishing last. No offence, of course!

Talk about taking this wooden spoon to heart. I was merely stating a fact which, to an extent, has been echoed around the boards by fellow Carlton supporters.

Wake up and smell the coffee Bee. Yes, Carlton are one of the all time great clubs, but right now, your the worst team in the league by a mile. Deal with it, and stop taking things so personally.
