Philly (Eagles, Flyers, Sixers)
#1 (Gold Coast) – David Swallow (WA)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 83kg, DOB: 19/11/1992
Recruited from: East Fremantle
Range: 1
Why: Already trained (and played with) with the Suns VFL team, and has been confirmed as the #1. Very good to elite player. Should contribute right away.

#2 (Gold Coast) – Harley Bennell (WA)
Height: 180cm, Weight: 70kg, DOB: 2.10.1992
Recruited from: Pinjarra JFC
Range: 2
Why: Again, trained with the Suns and reportedly impressed them tremendously. He’ll go here and like Swallow, will start contributing.

#3 (Gold Coast) – Sam Day (SA)
Height: 195cm, Weight: 90kg, DOB: 6.09.1992
Recruited from: East Fremantle
Range: 3
Why: Reports are that GC will take Day here. Not hard to see why.

#4 (West Coast) – Dyson Heppell (VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 9/01/1992
Recruited from: Sandringham Dragons
Range: 4-13
Why: This will shock a few who expected Atley/Gaff but let me break it down. West Coast have two good targets up forward in LeCras/Kennedy. Their midfield is young but shows a lot of promise. With Heppell, the Eagles can work on the backline which is going to be Darren Glass-less before too long. They can stop the bleeding of points and possibly get a nice midfielder with their other 1st round pick.

#5 (Gold Coast) – Daniel Gorringe (SA)
Height: 198cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 02/06/1992
Recruited from: Norwood
Range: 4-11
Why: another slightly controversial pick, but one that works when thought through. The suns will need a better ruckmen and Gorringe presents tremendous value. Furthermore, Suns will get him here, because Richmond will jump at the chance if he’s still there at 6.

#6 (Richmond) – Tom Lynch (VIC)
Height: 196cm, Weight: 86kg, DOB: 31/10/1992
Recruited from: Dandenong
Range: 5-25
Why: Richmond need 3 things going into this draft. A 1st tier ruckman, a quality tall defender so Deledio can go back to the mids, or a tall defender so Jack Riewoldt doesn’t get double teamed all day. Well Gorringe has just gone and Watson, McCarthy and Lycett are all pretty big reaches. Richmond grab Lynch here to complement Riewoldt, and he should after riding out a massive TAC finals campaign.

#7 (Gold Coast) – Billie Smedts (VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 08/06/1992
Recruited from: Geelong
Range: 7-25
Why: With the spine beginning to be in place, it now seems as if GC can start fleshing out the ribs. Smedts is a fantastic utility here and can play forward or back, making him of some use for the GC, who are trying to find ideal positions for their players at an AFL level.

#8 (Essendon) – Brodie Smith (SA)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 14/01/1992
Recruited from: Woodville West Torrens
Range: 4-16
Why: Last year Essendon took Jake Melsham at 10. Now, I could be wrong, but Jake looks more like an outside mid the more I look at him. What Eseendon needs is a pack crasher to feed the ball out. Smith is ideal for this job and provides good value.

#9 (Gold Coast) – Patrick McCarthy (SA)
Height: 194cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 11/03/1992
Recruited from: Glenelg
Range: 7-20
Why: Finishes the spine for the GC

#10 (Brisbane) – Andrew Gaff (VIC)
Height: 183cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 16/06/1992
Recruited from: Oakleigh Chargers
Style: Bryce Gibbs/ Luke Power/ Ben Cousins
Range: 4-13
Why: Brisbane will easily fall in love with Luke power’s lovechild, and his value is just too good to pass up.

#11 (Gold Coast) – Matt Watson (VIC)
Height: 194cm, Weight: 99kg, DOB: 16/07/1992
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
Likely destinations: 7-20
Why: Bock kind of makes Watson redundant, but he ain’t going to be around forever. Watson will be brought along slowly and for depth/rotational basis with Bock. Expect Watson/McCarthy to be a powerful KPD tandem within a few years.

#12 (Melbourne) – Shaun Atley (VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 13/09/1992
Recruited from: Murray
Style: 4-12
Why: More midfield depth. Also he’s the best currently available and while they would be screaming out for a tall option like Cook, would be kicking themselves if they didn’t grab a guy that could have quite easily gone 5+ picks earlier. They can and will get a Tall in the next round, for now they get an elite player that can contribute immediately.

#13 (Gold Coast) – Jarrad Polec (SA)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 12/10/1992
Recruited from: Woodville West Torrens
Range: 4-16
Why: BPA

#14 (Adelaide) – Ben Jacobs (VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 9/01/1992
Recruited from: Sandringham Dragons
Range: 10-23
Why: With the departure of Andrew McLeod, Adelaide are searching for a rebounding Half back flanker. Enter Jacobs, who has a booming left foot.

#15 (Gold Coast) – Joel Wilkinson (QLD)
Height: 183cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 29/11/1991
Recruited from: Broadbeach
Range: 10-43
Why: Gold Coast don’t have many needs now and will probably get the local kid. Doesn’t hurt that he can also play football.

#16 (Port Adelaide) – Scott Lycett (SA)
Height: 202cm, Weight: 95kg, DOB: 26/09/1992
Recruited from: Port Adelaide
Range: 6-19
Why: Port turned it around at the end of the year, but need help in the rucks department. Dean brogan is old and worn down. I’d imagine that Port have done quite a bit of extensive scouting on Lycett, and would be quite happy to pick him here.

#17 (North Melbourne) – Jack Darling (WA)
Height: 190cm, Weight: 86kg, DOB: 16.6.1992
Recruited from: Sacred Heart College
Range: 4-31
Why: The real gamble of this draft. I can imagine North Melbourne taking a gamble on Darling here and possibly playing him as a utility over the next couple years until he finds a true position. Also, North don’t have any big problems position wise as there are good young players in good position around the ground.

#18 (Carlton) – Mitch Hallahan (VIC)
Height: 182cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 23/08/1992
Recruited from: Dandenong
Range: 8-36
Why: No brainer pick that Carlton fans have told me they would love were it to happen. A hardnosed, bullish inside mid to take the workload off Judd’s shoulders (no pun intended).

#19 (Hawthorn) –– Jayden Pitt (VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 70kg, DOB: 07/10/1992
Recruited from: Geelong
Range: 5-25
Why: Adds to their already extensive elite outside midfield crop, but provides great value. Would be a perfect complement for Cyril Rioli.

#20 (Fremantle) – Lucas Cook (VIC)
Height: 194cm, Weight: 82kg, DOB: 03/03/1992
Recruited from: Nth Ballarat
Range: 12-24
Why: Ideal full forward. Frees up Keplar Bradley.

#21 (Sydney) – Reece Conca (WA)
Height: 182cm, Weight: 75kg, DOB: 12.8.1992
Recruited from: Victoria Park JFC
Range: 14-38
Why: Surprising, especially given that the Swans probably need a Tall forward more than anything. However, Paul Roos has had trouble with the work ethic of some of his younger players (Pat Veszpremi being one). The Solution? Draft young guys who want to play for the swans. Reece Conca is talented and grew up idolising Paul Kelly and the swans. He’s also a class bloke.

#22 (Western Bulldogs) – Mitch Wallis (F/S) (VIC)
Height: 185cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 24/10/1992
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
Range: 22/40
Why: Father/Son pick. Yawn.

#23 (Geelong) – Josh Green (TAS)
Height: 179cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 24/08/1992
Recruited from: Clarence
Range: 17-41
Why: If Ablett goes, then Varcoe goes to the midfield. Green replaces Varcoe in the forward line. If Ablett stays, Geelong are still going to need a new redhead for when Ling leaves.

#24 (St. Kilda) – Kieran Harper (VIC)
Height: 187cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 5/06/1992
Recruited from: Eastern Ranges
Range: 9-35
Why: Best player Available

#25 (Collingwood) – Jed Lamb (VIC)
Height: 182cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 23/08/1992
Recruited from: Dandenong
Range: 10-31
Why: Best Player available

Round 2 to come within the next week or so. Questions, comments etc much appreciated

Can the GC take Wilkinson as a QLD zone selection? Or would he need to slip through the main draft for that to happen

As far as I'm aware, the Gold Coast have already used all of their QLD zone selections. They can, however, pre-select him in the rookie draft were he to slide that far. This has a buckley's chance of happening though

Not so concerned about the pick ( although it is paying slight overs for him ), but the logic is a bit questionable.

Ruckmen...I agree we need another 1 or 2 on the list, but the problem is that the ones we have are too young...Graham is the 'old man' at 23, which most would agree is underage for a ruckman...Recruiting another kid wont fix that, but time will help, whoever we recruit.

"... quality tall defender so Deledio ..." Lids is running half back, not 'tall defender', and We probably have 6 KPD currently, so if anything I'd say we're looking to offload, not recruit there.

Tall forward...Potentially, although Hardwick seems to think Griffith is the second coming, so while I can see us using a good pick for a KPF ( he still has injury concerns after all ), I don't think we'll stretch unduely to do so.

The club has been fairly clear for some time that it sees a need for skillfull outside mids, so I'd expect that all else being equal, we'll be going there first up.

#3 (Gold Coast) – Sam Day (SA)
Height: 195cm, Weight: 90kg, DOB: 6.09.1992
Recruited from: East Fremantle
Range: 3
Why: Reports are that GC will take Day here. Not hard to see why.

Where abouts is East Fremantle in SA - Sorry just picking up on the obvious

Good post. :thumbsu:

Agreed, Gorringe isn't going to help Vickery learn to ruck, we can get rucks later and Vickery and Graham should be cementing their spots next year. I'd be more than happy in using a second or third pick on a ruck but we don't need two top ten draft pick rucks in three years.

"... quality tall defender so Deledio ..." Lids is running half back, not 'tall defender', and We probably have 6 KPD currently, so if anything I'd say we're looking to offload, not recruit there.

And lids isn't playing the running half back position because we don't have enough defenders, he's playing running half back position because that's what he's most suited for. We can have all the KPD in the world and lids' best position wont change. As you say, we're well stacked with defenders. Astbury looks the goods. Offloading McGuane says something.

Tall forward...Potentially, although Hardwick seems to think Griffith is the second coming, so while I can see us using a good pick for a KPF ( he still has injury concerns after all ), I don't think we'll stretch unduely to do so.

Tall forwards are fine (I'd like us to see some small forwards and HFF to complement) but as you said, it shouldn't be a reach when we can draft mids.

The club has been fairly clear for some time that it sees a need for skillfull outside mids, so I'd expect that all else being equal, we'll be going there first up.

Agree, Tambling is not doing the job and a player like Pitt would complement nicely. Someone like Gaff or Atley would be nice, we need more bodies to rotate through the midfield, our midfield is not set. We're not overflowing with mids like Carlton is, we have a midfield group which needs improvement.

Be interesting to see though, given the evenness of this draft we may be able to pick up a Fyfe/Bastinac good smallish type in the second round. I'm not adverse to a KPF but not at a reach.

I dearly hope Griffiths goes bang. If he does, wow.

Rekon ( and praying Heppell) will go to the Tigers. The W-Eagles will go for proven ball winners in Gaff or Atley...... or a key forwards such as Lynch, Gorringe, Darling. Goals win you matches & each team needs at least 3 big goal kicking targets!

Heppell will be in yellow & black!!

Would love Brodie Smith...

Dodoro has said that the Bombers may take a ruckman at #8.... if that were to happen who would be the best bet??

The WCE have a plethora of inside midfielders, they don't need anymore ball winners. Silly reasonings and hope isn't going to give you a better chance of getting the player you desire.

You should listen to your coach.

Agree...The opinion hasn't really changed since last year though. Could be huge, *IF* his body holds up.

Recruiting a backup seems prudent, much as we might hope it isn't needed.

Thus I think a 2nd/3rd rounder will be a KPF, but not 1st up.
