I begin mouthing off about his hacktastic kicking as soon as he marks the pill, just so I have enough time to fit in all the hatred.

Mentally cooking Duffield was a mistake Lyon should grow to regret. Pissing Duff off has left us with Ibbo as the only halfway decent kick in the backline (anyone who thinks Marblecalves Johnson is going to play all season should consider a job as an affirmation writer for Sunshine Rainbows and Lollipops Co) and Ibbo takes so long to make a decision, that he may as well not bother having a halfway decent kick.

Only 300 plus posts in 15 years . All the crap we've been through in those 15 yrs and you post this. You must be really pissed off.

There was a time when Bigger was the only thing standing between us and the trolls of Bigfooty - he didn't post often, but when he did it was quality.

And he knows his footy, trust me.

Harsh on Sheridan and that is the first time I have heard anything like that about Duff in his final years. I just thought he was cooked and youth was better.

But we are looking pretty thin from the backline. I think Tucker in for C Pearce might be a long term fix for that.
 
We need, every club needs, better use from the back line.
The best kicks in our team?
Bennell, Hill, Walters....Johnson, Mundy

For the most part, forward of centre.

I want to put a spreadsheet together for the squad listing their retained metres gained numbers, because the best one there is the guy we need at half back - and we need three of him. I just can't find it.
 
My thoughts on Spurr's performance the last 2 games.

Positive: one of our very few reliable marks. Took great marks that totally cut off the opponent's attack. We do need more of that.

Negative: Kicks it right back to the opponent's midfield :-(

Tough call. He wasn't performing well and does deserve criticism (especially on his disposal). Not one of the worst out there though. Don't deserve to suck on any private parts...yet.

Round 1 he had a some horrible turnovers by boot. One was a kick-in, one across the ground that went directly to opponents and from memory both went back through the goals, but I didn't see much wrong with his disposal on Saturday.

I've seen plenty of posts on here saying Spurr doesn't kick the ball well enough for a half back. Person who started the thread just has to look a bit harder.

His long kicking is a bit under rated. I've seen enough plays where I've had to stop rewind the video to see which of our defenders cleared the ball 50m with precision and realised its Spurr. A lot of mid defenders can all look the same in a passage of play, so if you've got a predisposition to look for player making mistakes, you'll find them with the skills being displayed across the board, but there's also a danger in crediting everyone elses mistakes with one player because you think it might of been him.

My thoughts are his marking is that good, that he could be tried up forward at times. They tried Ibbotson, why not try Spurr. He was recruited as a utility.

Reliable player. Best on ground against Geelong in the 2013 Qualifying final. Just look at the game he played on Martin in the return game against Richmond last year when Martin was best on ground against us at Subiaco in Round 10. (Spurr didn't play in Round 10)

I don't think anyone in the history of the game has played badly enough to warrant that punishment yoong...
 
Someone really needs to consolidate these player criticism threads. Don't need to start a new one everyone time someone has an opinion.
 
Spurr has had a bad start to the year, but Duff was weak as water when it came time to win a one on one contest, all Duff had was his kicking, very one dimensional.

I remember duff beating an opposition ruckman in a one-on-one marking contest before and going LOL. But yeah, generally was a poor one-on-one
 
Spurr has always been one of those players that can look first rate one week and just solid the next with the occasional but rare stinker thrown in from time to time. The difference is when the team's struggling, the down side of everybody gets highlighted usually out of proportion. This being another example.

Spurr never has been and never will be a super A grade player. He gives his all though and butters up no matter what the circumstance. We have missed Duffield's disposal from the back half for a while now. His ball use was MUCH underrated, but he was on the way out either way you look at it. OP has some merit, but I think part the problem is placing too high expectation on Spurr.

Also, FWIW, one of the big reason's Hill and Sherro are playing off the HB line is to do what Duffield could do only faster. You didn't include Hill in your calculations Bigger.
