St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

It's an interesting discussion.

no doubt the system has been gamed, but the premise remains that it's more than likely going to be a lower club that loses talent to a higher club.

There does need to be a mechanism that stops lower clubs from being pillaged of talent or as is, provides a path for those lower clubs to recoup some talent. last thing we need is clubs becoming feeders for those higher up.

The awarding of picks is not to different to the Academy f/s and nga's . Inventing a pick based on the accumulation of some random points that equals more than the sum of their worth
ie 3 picks in the 40's being worth a pick 4

maybe a discount on picks, on top of awarding picks outside the 1st round, maybe limited to bottom 8 teams only? not sure of what an equitable solution would be, but it's the smaller worry imo of all the issues surrounding the draft

If you could get 100% transparency, my sense is the impact of the academies is comparable to Victorian based draftees who refuse to be drafted outside of Victoria. It’s just no one cares about that.

0x Premiership Player, Nick Blakey has a love ring to it.

A genuinely disgraceful human being who got what he deserved.
Now, now. That is no way to talk about the son of a North Melbourne legend.

The original zone had him going to Brisbane

Don't think it did.

Original zone was within 50km of Brisbane CBD (from memory). Riewoldt was outside this. Ian Collins committed to expanding the zone to encompass all of the QAFL clubs, but never did:

The rest is history!

(P.S. - I saw him play what was to be his last reserves game, the week before he debuted, and even at 18, he was completely dominant. Blew me away live - he was the most dominant player I saw at that level, live, ever).

25 page thread for something that will never happen. The AFL can't run the academies because it's impossible for them. And the last thing they want to do is dilute the talent pool. Likewise, they're not going to let some minnow club who can't even look after themselves to tell them how they should run the game. Jog on and let's enjoy St Kilda fading into irrelevancy

Ross is still sooking about Daicos illegal tagging.

A deplorable, defensive coach and you can see where their loser mentality comes from, that has permeated through the club (again) - from this crusty old dud.

St Kilda - appoint Enright now. It will be the best thing you’ve done in 50 years.

you think it's just St Kilda wanting change?

he wasn't whinging about Daicos, he was making a point about Windhager being held away from Daicos by Pies players and not once paid a free for it. On occasions, there were 2 Pies players with arms around him, stopping him from getting to Daicos.

But I'd love to hear what Windhager did was illegal?? With McRae's mid-weak whinge, you think Windhager was going to hold him at gunpoint

Hasn’t McRae sooking it up to the afl and ask for special protection for him?

If what you're suggesting is true, then why do you think no other club is publicly backing up what St Kilda have been pushing?
I have no idea tbh
Clarkson and North were critical, but have since gone silent
Why WC aren't jumping in, considering how much they have been affected. Maybe self-interest keeps them from being vocal, they have a few kids in this year's draft, along with a few other Vic clubs. Similar to the Pies leading the charge against COLA. You didn't hear any other clubs publicly on that issue

But it's been said a few times that we have support from other clubs in our push for change. And the AFL has already mentioned that pathways are under review.

I don't think that we expect our call for priority access to be scrapped will be successful. It's a ploy, same as Matthews from GWS calling for the academy kids to be outside the draft, ask for more than you want.

It's an interesting study, when we had zones 5 teams dominated a 20 year period, since the uncompromised draft was introduced, nearly every team made a prelim in the next 20.

We're about to have our 2nd draft in the last 3 years go to ~30 picks in the 1st round, and the teams that need the talent the most, aren't the ones getting it.

North sooked it up and the afl
Gave the 5 first round draft picks to shut up. West coast will probably get pick two for Allen so they don’t want to rock the boat. The rest are cowards

Why do some St Kilda fans think the abolishment of the Victorian country zones in 1986 suddenly turned it into an "uncompromised draft" era for the following 20 years? You're not the first I've seen suggest this, but if you look into it then you'll find it's not true at all. The late 80s, 90s and early 2000s are probably the MOST compromised years in terms of drafting. West Coast were given exclusive/priority rights to all WAFL players for many years (even while winning flags), Brisbane were given exclusive/priority rights to SANFL, QAFL & NTFL players, Adelaide were later given exclusive rights to all SANFL players for several years, Fremantle were given 20+ pre-draft selections as well as zone access to WAFL players for several years, Port Adelaide were given zone access to SANFL players for several years.

It was also the era in which priority picks became really prominent and that obviously compromises the draft by pushing other picks back in the draft order. The priority picks allowed struggling clubs to speed up the rebuild process by acquiring multiple top end picks in the same year e.g. St Kilda finished dead last in 2000 and were able to get five top 5 picks in Riewoldt + Koschitzke in 2000, Ball + Clarke in 2001 and Goddard in 2002 over three drafts instead of just getting the standard three picks in those years. Two years later, the Saints find themselves in a prelim and lose by a single kick to the eventual premiers.

The truth is those years were anything but uncompromised. Just because it fits the narrative that the Saints are currently trying to push, doesn't mean it's true. In reality, what that era of drafting actually shows is the AFL is able to manufacture more equal on field outcomes by heavily compromising the draft.
