St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

I’d be more than happy for other AFL clubs to have academies if they’re so good. Why do clubs like St Kilda go straight to abolishing rather than asking for their own academy in Qld or NSW?

You can fund an academy with your own resources in the same way the Lions do.
Yeah you fund your own. Please.

StKilda (and north/doggies/Carlton/ess) paid off the AFL asset which underwrites your dynasty (post-covid).

Enjoy it, we just celebrated the 80th anniversary of your last legitimate Flag.

You do come across as a bloke who would have celebrated 1944 with gusto, given there's probably no way we could determine that as a legit either given we were at war.

North are only permitted to survive due to clubs like Brisbane entering the competition and boosting the tv rights deal. The vfl would otherwise be broke. North would have been the first cab off the rank to go bye bye. It’s why at the 100th pre match a few weeks ago the only compliment of north - which was said over and over - ‘we survived’.

But thank you for contributing to our three-peat, we really appreciate it! Now back in your box.

Permitted to survive, like Fitzroy? You're only in business to support the VFL. Wonderful fraudulent existence, but thanks.

You think trading out pick 20 and others for Levi at 5 and Marshall at 25 is a sacrifice. ANY club would gladly draft out of every pick if it meant securing 1 or 2 extra high end kids, just because clubs trade for the pick (20). Is because they always want to trade up, not down like the academy/fs/nga rort.

Making stuff up? Here’s fact. I know you’ll argue semantics but it doesn’t change fact, a bundle of pick 40’s will NEVER equal to top 5 pick. Even on the curve to be implemented this year, no club in the comp will ever trade out of a 1st round pick for a bundle of 2nd, 3rd rounders, NONE.

2025 point explained

PICK 5 - So the issue that had fans fuming last night, was that Melbourne made a bid for Ashcroft with their Pick 5, and Brisbane was able to match the bid with picks 40, 42, 43 and 46.
PICK 4 -Father–son selection (son of Peter Daicos), matched bid by Gold Coast, used picks 38, 40, 42, 44
PICK 2 - Father–son selection (son of Luke Darcy), matched bid by Greater Western Sydney, used picks 34, 42, 43, 44, 45

PICK 2 - To match the bid for Will Ashcroft, Brisbane used picks 34, 35, 38, 40 and 41, getting back 41, 82, 84 and 86.
Id be happy to give father/son the ass OR make it so if it's a first round bid you have give up a first round pick plus equal points on a bid . None of this accumulation of later picks crap. This means the Lions s would have had to pay at least pick 18 for Ashcroft x 2.

Also saints have been terribly unlucky with father sons while the Lions have been terribly lucky getting 3 guns all at the same time and age .

Joel Jeffrey
Jake Bowey
Hugo Ralphsmith
Noah Anderson

But northern academies can't be abolished because unless the AFL finds more new players in QLD and NSW then the whole comp collapses. You can't argue against the demographics on this .

I don’t think you’ve been listening, they’re done meekly accepting this rubbish!

You’re most welcome.
Unlike most Queenslanders, you obviously went to school. Well done you, I'm proud of you.

My little Brothers raging ex boyfriend is a mad Lion now Melb based, so I have a soft spot for the Lions. Let's hope they win a few legitimate flags before my time is up. They deserve it.

Hard to say because we don't know how Fincher is going to be viewed in October. If he becomes a top 10 prospect, then a team like Melbourne with pick 4 likely will bid on him. If he is valued around pick 20 then the Dees likely won't bother.

Dees also don’t have their FRP as they traded it to Essendon.

After what St Kilda pulled with Kako last year and potentially 3 FRPs in front of the saints you’d say Essendon is in prime position for some quid pro quo.

Academies and NGA is the same rort. Skim off the top echelon of player. GCS has the eligibility criteria on their site. Rep team is the minimum qualification, not really any different.
anybody who posts this take should be immediately banned from sharing their opinion on the northern academies on this website.

Chip mate its a great time to be a lions supporter, finals every year, father sons, grand finals, new stadium, new facility
2024 reigning premiers

Cheer up Chip your only recent premierships(last century) have a huge asterisk, must be real awkward to go to one of those reunions

Queensland (not Brisbane) is a wonderful place for a holiday. Couldn't live in Bronx Nation for all the money in Yatala.

The "legitimate flags" taunt is so childish.

I had the privilege of being at the 75 Grand Final to see North win its first ever (then) VFL flag. You could easily taint that flag as being "illegitimate" because of the short lived and much maligned ten year rule - and the experience, leadership and on-field quality that Rantall, Wade and Davis (RIP) brought to the club as a result - if you are that way inclined (I'm not).

Best just to acknowledge that flags are hard won and give credit to the winning GF side. Even if it is begrudging acknowledgement.

Took advantage of a rule which every team realistically could have. Not the same. But nice try.

If you must use the archaic VFL to further your argument, fine, Essington stole our entire recruiting zone - so would be like giving Baggers all of South East Queensland? I'm not sure what you're arguing.

I don't care about maturity, why should I? As long as I get to play golf when I want, go skiing in USA once a year - does it really matter? My name is hardly attached, it's anonymous forum unless I'm mistaken. Probably best to think before reacting to a nothing.

Exactly the same feeling on my part back at you.

I was just trying to impart a bit of wisdom and advice. As a favour.

However just like the proverbial horse - I led you to water, but I couldn't make you drink.

It will twig with you one day. :)

I remember the days when you were a great club. My grandpa was an 80 year member of the baggers, I'm a North fan with 'Baggers Mentality' - it must be tough wandering around in a recurring nightmare. I feel for you!

So because the AFL franchises get stupid draft concessions each year, other clubs that point out the handouts shouldn't benefit on the rare times they get a chance?

All for saints being vocal and also taking what little benefit they can get once the AFL have propped up the northern states.

The problem with the saints management “vocal” is that their oppinion is sooky and stupid.

The academy system as constructed is a rort.

The academy system greatly benefits the AFL by increasing the skill level and the player base of the comp.

Saints solutions scream sour grapes and dragging the system down vs bringing everyone up to a level playing feild.

The saints don’t offer a solution to the talent issues facing the league at all. Their opinion is that the academies should be abolished. No plan past that.

Just like when Eddie used to say it, I don’t take the Saints seriously at all. They don’t offer a plan or solution. Just toxicity.

Saints have Marshall then they have possibly the most promising Ruck prospect in the country (Alex Dodson) yet for some reason SoS has a big hard-on for TDK and so they are going to trash their salary cap and also save Carlton from their own mess and gift them a top ten draft pick.

He’s the one that’s bit. That’s all there is to it. They’ve offered big money deals to dozens of players. Rayner and Clug’s top offers both came from the saints at a touch over $1.3m pa. Rowell reported to have been offered similar money to TDK. No one wants to go to the Saints for whatever reason. They all choose to go to the other VFL clubs - which is the saints major issue.

Once they can sell a plan to players it’ll turn but if you’re a player would you want to go to a club which is publicly whinging and saying they can’t compete and that the whole system is against them? lol.

When we were down the bottom of the ladder and Fagan convinced the likes of Neale etc to come to the Lions - he had to sell them a vision based of the entire club on and off field and where we were going. Saints aren’t in a position to sell much of anything. They should be because they’re in an excellent location. But can’t.

Dodson will be an elite key forward/ruck not a ruckman first.

Which of the players StKilda offered big money too actually left?

It’s not as if they left their clubs and chose anyone but StKilda.

Put it before but my gut feel is St Kilda have a large part of salary cap space that they need to spend now or lose it for good.

They likely have millions upon millions free and have decided that instead of losing 2.5 mill in cap space by not using it they will give it to TDK and frontload a big contract for him. In your eyes you see 7 years 12 mill but from Saints perspective they are probably giving him 5 mill they would otherwise lose altogether which puts the deal down to more of a 7 year 7 mill type deal...
