I want to buy it, but I have to wait for the full reviews. I just got a sneaky feeling that it might be another Assassin's Creed. - All graphics and boring as bat-droppings.

Wouldn't have thought so, having played the game I guess you know what it is like, but from me just having seen vids I see alot of Half Life about it, obviously mainly in the Havok physics, and the ability to lift and throw objects/people.

I'll get the game on day one, but I won't be having huge expectations for it.

Actually it looks a lot like the Jedi Knight series that was on PC (the last two on Xbox as well.) Using force throw and grip where major components of these 3rd persons and the last one. Jedi Academy (last one) came out nearly a year before Half Life 2, the idea many years before that (Dark Forces II I think, released 1997.) So if anything Valve stole the idea from LucasArts who owns the Jedi Knight and Force Unleashed rights.

What I've seen on the demo's this game looks like the next instalment of these older PC based ones. They were good in their own right, but nothing like your classic FPS.

IMHO Jedi Knight: Dark Forces and Jedi Outcast >>>>> HL2 as far as game play. But the last one Jedi Academy <<<<< HL2, that one was shite.

you're kidding right?

HL2 was visionary for its time. just like gta 4. there are some games that words cannot describe. the wii will make it look good, but star wars is a cliche franchise. we need something new.

you may be right.....

early review from EGM C- C- B

in the 1up yours podcast it was inferred that using your force powers to pull a star destroyer from the atmosphere isn't as cool as it sounds....

it begs the question....how the hell did lucasarts screw up a "pulling a star destroyer from the sky with your bare hands" game sequence :/

my moolah is on a shoddy quick time event

HL2 is easily one of the most highly regarded games of the last ten years. Continually ranks in the top 10 of numerous gaming publications Top 100 lists.

All the Katarn games suffered from shit level design, useless force powers and shonky lightsaber combat. As for Valve copying Lucasarts  The only objects you could interact with in any of them was push/pull a few crates, grip an enemy or 2 and possibly get lucky with a force push for the same result/animation every time. The only influence any of them had was being one of the first FPS with multi-tier leveling (Dark Forces).

If you'd bothered to read what I was quoting then you realise I was responding to someone who said that the force powers etc looked like a cheap rip off of HL2. I was simply letting him know that games existed before HL2 that had these attributes. One of them in fact was the predecessor to force unleashed which came out before HL2.

And as for HL2 being one of the most regarded games in the last 10 years, well I'm not surprised. That's because you get more votes from FPS console player n00bs in these polls than anyone else. I disregard any poll that has Halo in the top 10, which is all of them. You might as well say Britney Spears is a better musician than Janic Jopplin because she sold more singles and won a teen choice award.

That said I enjoyed HL2, and the Jedi Knight series, and I'll take back all the <<<<< because I probably enjoyed both about equal. But it still makes me laugh when n00bs get on here who can't be older than 14 screaming about how HL2 and GTA4 are visionary for it's time:eek:. GTA4 is simply an evolved form of GTA: Vice City (and Mafia which came out around the same time). And HL2 is simply an evolved form of the original HL. These were the ground breaking games.

HL2 was great, but TBH its godlyness is becoming exaggerated. I really only thought it got good towards the latter stages.
Overall the original Half Life was a far more revolutionary IMO. It was worth replaying many times over whereas I think I might have played HL2 once and then started again only to get bored.

Dark Forces Faked it like Duke Nukem did, it was still 2.5D, if memory serves me correctly though it was one the first engines to allow looking up and down. Or maybe that was Ultima Underworld...

Just on that, I just finished playing HL2 for the 3rd time, this is from someone who has pretty much never replayed a game once done, it's just so damn fun and varied, now I am going to go and finish off the 2 episodes.

Valve pretty much set the standard on what was expected from AI from that point on, that's why it was so good. Before that it was just enemies running to a pre determined point that you could line up perfectly, take your hand off the control and hit fire as they run and stand there. If you hid around a corner they’d forget where you where and walk along their pre determined path after 10 seconds. I remember hiding behind a corner thinking I'll pop my head out once he's forgotten and then blow them away on one HL mission to see a grenade land in front of me. I turned around to escape and noticed I was walled in. It was the first time I've ever seen that level of AI. Before that making games challenging was just adding more monsters with bigger weapons and higher hit points.

yeah, I actually really liked the episode packs...

Episode 1 isn't very good. I still haven't completed it.
But Episode 2 is just awesome.

I remember when HL1 first came out and it just blew me away, every FPS before it paled in comparison (single player wise anyway). I never had that feeling in a game again until HL2. But each to their own, I think the reason HL2 is rated so highly has a lot to do with the Source engine. The models, graphics, animations were great. Plus it was really the first game to properly utilize Havok physics. Max Payne 2 did to some extent but not on same scale.

Was leaning toward gaming publications more so then fans. IGN still has it in their top 10, and various gaming mags (including PC Gamer, PCPP) still do.

Agree about Halo in the top 10 though :o Apart from vehicular combat was a pretty average game. and had been done before.

The first reviews are coming in for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and it looks like I was right in my trepidation, from 4 reviews so far Star Wars is at a measily 68 on metacritic, with its highest score being a weak 7.5 from XBOX Mag, which usually gives generous reviews.

METACRITIC'S FIRST STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED REVIEWS: OUCH!
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and other platforms is LucasArts' most ambitious gaming project to-date. Taking over four years from concept to completion and enduring multiple delays, the long-awaited game is the first next-gen development effort by the small studio, and the first to utilize multiple new technologies and the direct input of Industrial Light and Magic.

Taking all this into consideration it comes as a bit of a surprise to see what print media is saying about the game. With four reviews in the can, Force Unleashed has only mustered a meta score of 6.8, with individual publication scores ranging from a mediocre 7.5 all the way down to a pathetic 56.

Official Xbox Magazine offers the highest score of 7.5 and has the following to offer.
With its non-branching storyline and no multiplayer, Force Unleashed is certainly less ambitious than the classic "Jedi Knight" games - and ultimately, its design makes it feel more videogame-y and less of an all-engrossing Star Wars experience than Xbox entries like "Jedi Knight II" or "Jedi Academy." But when the game is on, it's on.
Games and GamePro magazine each scored Force Unleashed a 70, citing hack-and-slash gameplay is redundant but there is fun to have.

At the bottom of the barrel is Electronic Gaming Monthly's 56 and one simple yet powerful quote, "An ambitious--yet ultimately dissatisfying--effort." For comparison, EGM is saying Force Unleashed is no better than The Incredible Hulk per Metacritic's scores. Ouch!

We've been playing the full retail version of The Force Unleashed for a few days now and will have our own review up once the embargo lifts on September 15. Until then, you may want to ratchet down those ultimate Star Wars game expectations a few notches.
I'll let you judge, but great games rarely get a 56 rating.

What the ****?!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??

Sweet - I've got a Wii too.

The graphics will be lame, but if I get to use the WiiRemote like a lightsabre, then I'd be happy.

I don't know how true the light sabre controls will be on the wiimote but there is another game that's only lightsabre duels coming out.
