If the mods feel this should go somewhere else, feel free to move it. I'm not entirely sure where it would belong, though.

I was browsing the AFL team statistics and just thought some of St. Kilda's numbers were really interesting. There are definitely some encouraging numbers there that indicate the style of play we will see over the next few years. Things really aren't as doom and gloom as some would have you think. There are signs there.

Rebound 50s as a percentage of entries?

Centre clearances as a percentage of all centre clearances?

Contested possessions vs uncontested possessions? Contested possessions as a percentage of all contested possessions?

Hitouts as a percentage of all hitouts? Hitouts to advantage? Hitouts to advantage conceded?

Don't take this as a dig, Saint Luke, but I think these total numbers can be misleading.

Credit where it's due - that we're 6th-8th in clearances and hitouts is a great sign for Longer, given that he's doing the VAST majority of the ruck work for us at the moment.

Inside 50s conceded?

That's not a stat that the AFL has available.

Rebound 50s as a percentage of entries?

A whopping 91%. Doesn't really change the nature of things. Just means we need to be getting more of the ball in the centre, something we have known for a long time.

Centre clearances as a percentage of all centre clearances?

33%

Contested possessions vs uncontested possessions? Contested possessions as a percentage of all contested possessions?

41% of possessions are contested. Are you asking percentage of total contested possessions across the league? If so, our number is 14%.

Hitouts as a percentage of all hitouts? Hitouts to advantage? Hitouts to advantage conceded?

Advantage and conceded aren't available stats. We have 6% of all hitouts, but I really don't know what that number will do for you. It's not like there are other clubs with a dramatically different percentage.

Thanks for that.

So we rebound 91% of all times the ball comes inside our defensive 50? That sounds unbelievable good, and doesn't really correlate with what I have witnessed this season.

We only get 33% of the centre clearances in our games? That sounds poor.

The contested possessions was a question of "of all the contested possessions collected in St Kilda games, how many (and what percentage) are collected b St Kilda?"

The hit out stats sounds like it would involve a bit of manual labour. But in Round 1 we had 29 hitouts out of 72, which would be roughly 40% of all hitouts.

No, you just said percentage of inside 50's so I thought you were referring to our inside 50's and not the opposition.

That is an interesting statistic, though. 91% of all of our inside 50's have come as rebounds.

No, again, you asked percentage of centre clearances of total clearances. Of all the clearances we got, 33% of them were from the centre.

The contested possessions was a question of "of all the contested possessions collected in St Kilda games, how many (and what percentage) are collected b St Kilda?"

That will take math I don't have time to do at the moment but will get aroudn to at some point.

Credit where it's due - that we're 6th-8th in clearances and hitouts is a great sign for Longer, given that he's doing the VAST majority of the ruck work for us at the moment.

But if it's based on total numbers (which I am sure it is) rather than based on percentage won, then this is by-product of our style. Our games have been ones with the higher number of stoppages as our frantic tackling style causes there to be more ball-ups. And as we've kicked a good percentage of goals, and conceded more, there's been a lot of restarts to attend.

Also as Punter noted, we are winning 33% of centre clearances. And 16th in opposing team clearances (i.e. we've allowed the 3rd-worst against us). This tallies up with my view that Longer is doing really well for periods of games, but not maintaining it. Even against Carlton when he was facing quite a poor opponent, he was visibly shattered in the 4th.

Our two big issues as we develop aren't really recordable as a stat - skill under pressure and ability to run out games. As we get better at both, everything else should rise.

David Armitage is now 3rd in the AFL for disposals, only 1 disposal behind Hannebery and about 20 from Lewis.

Jack Steven is equal 1st with Priddis for tackles with 36, 2 tackles clear of Dahlhaus.

Billy Longer is 3rd for hitouts in the comp.

For Fantasy points, the Hawks have 3 players in the top 10, but we're the only other team with multiple players in there, with 2 (Armo and Steven).

Josh Bruce is second in the Coleman race, although he's now 5 goals away from Kennedy. Still, he's a goal ahead of Franklin and Schulz.

And Kennedy is now injured.... Josh 'the' Bruce for Coleman Medalist! :)

After 5 games, Bruce has 17 goals. Last year, our highest goal-kicker other than Roo was Stanley, with 18 goals for the entire season.
