Despite a rather stilted season, Nick Riewoldt is currently 4th in the League for marks, and his average marks per game is 1.5 higher than anybody else in the top 50 markers of the comp, at 9/7 marks per game as opposed to the overall leader Josh Gibson at 8.2 marks per game.

Jack Steven remains number three on the tackles stats, and is only one tackle behind second, Andrew Swalow. He's 8 tackles behind the leader, Matty Priddis. Jack is also third on fantasy points, only three points behind Dane Swan.

Despite not playing last week or for the rest of the year, Billy Longer is 6th on the hitouts, behind Goldstein, Sandy, Jacobs, Nic Nat, and Stefan Martin.

Josh Bruce is only 2 goals away from 50 for the season, and is 7th in the Coleman, equal with Jack Riewoldt, and ahead of Buddy. He's among a pack hovering around 50ish goals, with Kennedy way ahead at 71 goals.

I was looking at the Footy Live app and they have some stats listed in the preview against Sydney.

St Kilda has kicked 71% of its goals from within the corridor this season - ranked 15th.

Since Round 18, the Saints have kicked back-to-back goals 30% of the time - the lowest percentage of any side.

St Kilda has averaged six more effective kicks per game than its opposition this season - the fourth-best differential of any side.

The Saints won 10 more clearances than the Cats last week - their equal-best differential in any game this season.

St Kilda has retained possession from 43% of kicks into the forward 50 this season - the equal fourth-highest percentage of any side.

The Saints have laid seven more tackles per game than their opposition - the second-best differential of any side.

St Kilda have used the corrider 14% of the time when exiting from defensive 50 - the lowest percentage of any side.

The Saints have generated a goal from 23% of their inside 50s - the third-lowest percentage of any side.

Since Round 16, Sam Fisher has taken 39 uncontested marks - ranked 2nd at the club and 13th in the competition.

Over the past six weeks, Hugh Goddard has won 44 intercept possessions - ranked 1st at the club and 5th in the competition.

On the subject of goalkicking accuracy, you could make an argument that it has cost us dearly. See my post from the Sydney review thread below:

Put it this way - in 11 games this season we've had at least one quarter where we've kicked at least 3 more behinds than goals. We've lost every one of those games that has not been against Melbourne.

Round 1 4th Quarter 4.7 (lost by 9 points)
Round 5 1st Quarter 2.6 4th Quarter 1.4 (lost by 2 points)
Round 7 2nd Quarter 2.5 (lost by 46 points)
Round 11 4th Quarter 1.4 (won by 2 points)
Round 13 1st Quarter 1.5 4th Quarter 2.5 (lost by 6 points)
Round 15 1st Quarter 0.5 (lost by 35 points)
Round 16 1st Quarter 2.5 (lost by 16 points)
Round 17 2nd Quarter 0.3 (won by 37 points)
Round 18 1st Quarter 1.4 2nd Quarter 2.6 (lost by 63 points)
Round 19 2nd Quarter 0.4 (lost by 37 points)
Round 20 2nd Quarter 3.8 (lost by 37 points)
Round 22 1st Quarter 1.5 (lost by 97 points)

You could easily argue we threw away three wins with poor kicking.

Further to that we're the only team that has kicked more behinds than goals this season. Our cumulate accuracy, expressed as points per scoring shot, looks like this:

3-09-2015 9-35-25 AM.jpg

Overall, we've kicked 237.243. Overall league accuracy is 53.57%, which translates into 3.68 points per scoring shot. If we had gone at the league average, we'd have scored 20 more goals this season and 20 less behinds, which roughly translates into five points per game.

At the other end, we've been poor too. We've conceded 57% accuracy (301.231), which only Carlton matches. So we're league worst in both measures. If we had conceded at the league rate of accuracy, we'd have conceded 16 fewer goals, which roughly translates into four points per game.

We have lost games by 9 points, 2 points and 6 points this year, and played in a draw. All three of those losses came in games where we had at least one quarter where we have kicked three more behinds than goals, and we had more scoring shots in the drawn match.

Putting it plainly, we could have been 10-11 going into this last round (with a percentage of 90.2), rather than 6-1-14 with a percentage of 81.7.

Interesting stats. The stat re kicking back to back goals is interesting and sort of highlights what I have noticed about our poor midfield work and inability to defend very well in the midfield, usually resulting in answering opposition goals straight after we score one. We indeed should have won at least two more games and coughed up advantages through poor general team disposal rather than outright inexperience. This puts pressure back on the coach and his specialists as there have been too many foot and hand turnovers while under no pressure in games this season, and if we want to climb up that ladder, we are not going to do it with poor efficiency rates- so a bit of head scratching by Richardson and his mates over the long break.
