Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Which is correct gents?

Both are correct.

West Coast has never been 16th on the ladder at any stage.

However in 1989, West Coast were last on the ladder from Round 9 through to Round 16. There were only 14 teams in the competition at that stage.

Ah yeh of course. I had a feeling I'd get done on a technicality. Can't believe I didn't think of it.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1: Geelong hold the record for the greatest combined margin against a single opponent in one season. In 1899 the combined margin over St Kilda in 3 matches was 325 points.

Geelong 51.53-359
St Kilda 3.16- 34

2: The greatest combined margin from 2 matches is 283 points.

1991
Hawthorn 64.42-426
Fitzroy 21-17-143

3: The top 30 combined margins in a season range from 196 to 325 points.

4: Geelong has the most places in the above list: 9

5: St Kilda has the the most places in the list of top 30 combined margins against: 7

I can see you will be a great resource for us mate :thumbsu:

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Just 1 not so obscure statistic. Was having a look at Richmond's ladder position over the last 8 years, at Round 7, where we are now, and then at Round 22.

It doesn't paint a pretty picture. Even in 2003 and 2005 when they started well, look what happened after that.

Code:
[B][U]RICHMOND[/U][/B]

[B] 2009 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002[/B]

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1.
Jack Dyer's first two games of League football were against the same team.
Nth Melbourne (Rd 1/ Rd 11 1931)

2.
Kevin Bartlett holds the record for most League behinds in a career

3.
Blair Campbell of Richmond, in his first game of football, on his 20th birthday, kicked the winning goal after the siren.

4. Fred Swifts last game of league football was captain of Richmond in the 1967 Premiership

5. Brian Taylor was the first Richmond player to kick 10 goals at the MCG.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

I just have one, and it's more amusing than anything else... :p

-Melbourne didn't win a single match between July 1915 and May 1920. (yes i know there was was a war for part of this, it's still funny)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Nice one!

Can't say I knew that Melbourne sat out a 3rd year (then lost every game upon their return).

That would mean that while University went the longest number of games without a win, Melbourne went the longest time without a win.

In a similar vein, Port Adelaide's Chris Hall's only two games of AFL footy were against the same team in the same year, (vs. Hawthorn, R03 & R18 2003).

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Robert Scott did not touch the ball in his last three games of AFL football.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. The largest ladder slide from one year to the next was Adelaide in 1998 (1st) to 13th in 1999.
2. The largest ladder climb from one year to the next was Melbourne in 1999 (14th) to 2nd in 2000.
3. Of the teams with the most points scored against them in a season, the Kangaroos in 2000 sit 17th with their oppenents scoring an average of 110 points a game against them but they also had a winning percentage of 60% and made it through to the preliminary final.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

There's something about St Kilda.

1.
St Kilda's most common final position is last, 23.64% of seasons contested. Next most common is 12th, 12.73% of seasons contested.

2. St Kilda and Carlton’s 1,000th goal against each other was 25 years apart – Carlton's in 1944 and St Kilda's not until 1969.

3.
From 1937 to 1973 St Kilda only scored 1 century against Carlton, 15.17-107 in 1966.

4. To the end of 2008 St Kilda has scored 10 consecutive centuries against Carlton. Previously the best was 2 consecutive in 1935 (both losing scores) and 1991-1992 (a losing and a winning score.)

5. In 2005 St Kilda had a goals scored to scoring shots ratio of 61.8%. This is the best accuracy ever recorded in a single season by any team.

More about St Kilda.

Not forgetting that last and 12th overlapped for many seasons.

1. 2007 nab rising star j.selwood
2008 nab rising star Palmer
2009 nab rising star favourite rich

What is all common about these picks?? All lucky number 7 in their drafts.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Anyone have attendance stats for Monday night football? There couldn't have been that many over the years. If you can spend a couple minutes, could you add to the table I have started below:

Code:
R 4 Richmond v North Melbourne MCG 62,606 Mon 24-Apr-1995
...
R 8 Collingwood v St Kilda DCK Mon 11-May-2009

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Two missed including 1 'obscure'.

R8 Geelong v Essendon Brisbane Exhibition Ground 28,000 Mon 16/06/1952
R9 Collingwood v Geelong MCG 56,609 Mon 27/05/1996

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Night match?

As part of the so called 'National Day' round the Geelong v Essendon match was scheduled to be played on Saturday 14th June but due to heavy rain was postponed to the following Monday night under lights. (I believe the Brisbane exhibition ground had lighting for night trotting.)

ref: Every Game Ever Played 4th edition 1994. p 376.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Is that true? if so that is amazing, how do you go 106 games with only 6 tackles?????

I hate to be a spoilsport, but according to... http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pc-fremantle-dockers--clive-waterhouse ...Clive had 74 career tackles averaging 0.7 per game.

Fremantle have never played in a draw, the closest coming in the 'sirengate' match in which the result was overturned the following Wednesday from a draw to a one point win to the dockers, after a mishap in which the umpires failed to hear the siren and a point was kicked after the game had unofficially 'ended'.

Yeh that sounds more realistic, thats still an ordinary tackle count but 7 he would have been dodging tackles!

Which now leads me to thinking which players have a low tackles per game ratio (given some minimum game criteria)?

I can see there are a handful of players that played 20+ games last year and averaged < 1 per game.
