Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. Collingwood have played on a Monday night 5 times, yet have lost each time.

2. Adelaide are the only other side to have played on a Monday night more than twice. While Collingwood are 0-5, Adelaide are 3-0.

3. Collingwood recorded their biggest ever loss to St Kilda last night (88pts), and their lowest score under Mick Malthouse (40pts), yet it isn't their lowest Monday night score, which is 39pts.

4. Somewhat surprisingly, the largest crowd for a Monday night game of 62,606 was for Richmond v North Melb, the first Monday night game of the modern era.

5. Round 8 is the most popular round for Monday night football (5 of the 14).

supplementary

6. Teams playing interstate on a Monday night have had moderate success, winning 4 of 9.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Not going to post 5 because I don't know 5, but I'll post my favourite one.

Damien Hardwick is probably the biggest choker in AFL history. In each of the last 6 years of his career, his team won the minor premiership (3 with Essendon and 3 with Port) but these teams only managed 2 premierships and only 3 grand finals between them in those years.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

As we all know, Geelong recently became the "winningest team" over 50 games:

Code:
[B][U]Team W L D 50-game span [/U][/B]
Geelong 47 3 0 2007-R 6 to 2009-R 5
Essendon 46 4 0 1999-R 9 to 2001-R 9
Collingwood 45 4 1 1927-R10 to 1929-R18
Geelong 45 4 1 1951-R 5 to 1953-R13
Carlton 44 6 0 1907-R10 to 1909-PF
Hawthorn 44 6 0 1988-R 4 to 1990-R5

When Geelong achieved that feat in Round 5, only Steve Johnson and Joel Corey had played each of those games. With Geelong winning in Round 6, Corey Enright and Cameron Mooney joined the list of players to have won 47 of 50.

However, with Geelong winning in Round 7, James Bartel became possibly the first player to win 48 from 50 games (he did not player in Rnds 21-22 2007, and missed one of Geelong's losses).

Two other players are close to equalling Bartel, Joel Selwood is 46/48 while Cameron Ling is 44/46, having missed a couple games this season. Together with Bartel, Selwood and Ling were absent from Geelong's Round 21 loss to Port Adelaide in 2007.

I'd be interested if Michael Rogers could confirm or refute these stats. Has any other player equalled or bettered Bartel's 48 from 50?

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

something I extrapolated from Michael Roger's Ladder page:

Carlton have never finished a season in 12th, 13th or 14th place. Their final finishing position, from 9th onwards is represented in the table below. 7 of those have been in the last 7 years. In fact, if we ignore the past 20 years, then the only times Carlton had finished lower than 8th in any season were 1925 (9th) and 1964 (10th).

Code:
[B]9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th 16th[/B]
 1 1 5 0 0 0 2 3

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. Matthew Bate's first 8 games were wins (100%). Since then he has won 10 out of 47 (21%).

2. Tony Modra (3.56) has a better goals-per-game average than Matthew Lloyd (3.49)

3. Ben Rutten kicked 3 goals with his first 3 kicks in AFL football giving him a 100% record. Since then he has kicked 2 goals from 710 kicks, giving him a 0.28% record.

4. In round 20 1994, Geelong defeated North Melbourne by 1 point, yet dropped 2 spots on the ladder from 6th to 8th.

5. In round 9 1994, North Melbourne vs Collingwood, John Longmire kicked 6 goals and 6 behinds from 11 kicks!!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

How is that possible? Did he at one point handball it through his own goals?

I hate to be a spoilsport, but according to... http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pc-fremantle-dockers--clive-waterhouse ...Clive had 74 career tackles averaging 0.7 per game.

Fremantle have never played in a draw, the closest coming in the 'sirengate' match in which the result was overturned the following Wednesday from a draw to a one point win to the dockers, after a mishap in which the umpires failed to hear the siren and a point was kicked after the game had unofficially 'ended'.
http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/teams/fremantle.html <--- also has him down for 74 tackles

As much as I like this thread and this board it has to be said that you people have too much time on your hands or at least your sources do.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Just looking at allthestats.com on their site, an interesting correlation with Port and Brisbane.

Both sides started in their current incarnation as Port Adelaide Power and brisbane Lions in 1997. The Lions have played 291 games for 162 wins, 124 losses and 5 draws. The Power have played 289 times for 161 wins, 124 losses and 4 draws! Almost identical results in their 12+ seasons in the comp.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Just one stat. After just 4 rounds this year, Fremantle had managed
- a goalless 1st quarter
- a goalless 2nd quarter
- a goalless 3rd quarter, and
- a goalless 4th quarter.

Probably a while since a team has managed that.

Mark Arceri saved Carlton from that feat all in the same game on a wet day at Western Oval back in the early 90's i think. Kicked a goal with only a couple of minutes left in the match. Geelong in the infamous 'Silvagni-Milburn' match in 2001 kicked three goals in the 1st quarter and that was all she wrote for the rest of the game.

The 1992 Grand Final saw a remarkable goalkicking list by the Eagles. Sumich 6, Matera 5, Wilson 3 and Evans 2 made up their 16 goals, kicked by just four players. I wonder when the last Premier to have had as few as four goalkickers would have been...although answering my own question Sydney 2005 and Blues 1968 must be on the list.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

In 1927, Collingwood won the Grand Final with only ONE goalkicker: Gordon Coventry, who booted both their goals. Richmond only managed one. Must have been a wet day.

In Round 5, 2000 Geelong beat West Coast by 81 points. West Coast had eleven indicidual goalkickers that day, but none of them kicked more than one.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Danny Frawley had a better win% as Richmond coach than Terry Wallace currently has.

Terry would go ahead slightly if Richmond won each of their next 4 games*.

* - not going to happen

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

AFL teams that have never won more than 10 consecutive games in a row:

St Kilda (10), Adelaide (10), Western Bulldogs (9), Fremantle (9), Port Adelaide (8), Sydney* (8)

* although have done so as South Melbourne (1918, 1933, 1935)

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Hawthorn entered the league in 1925 and it took them until 1942 to beat Collingwood. The Pies won their first 29 games versus the Hawks.

In 1954, Collingwood had played Hawthorn 51 times and had a 49-2 record against them!

From that point on, Hawthorn has a 52-44 advantage.

49-2!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

University did not have a positive overall W/L record against any team.

Their only shining light was a 4-3 home record against St Kilda.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Richmond joined the league in 1908 but did not manage to defeat Carlton until round 2, 1918. In that year South Melbourne won their last home and away game by five points, the semifinal by five points and the grand final by five points. Earlier in the year they had also beaten Geelong by five points in round 8, and endured their only loss for the year- to St Kilda, by five points in round 4.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

For the second year in a row, in Round 9, Brad Johnson had a shot at goal after the siren to win the game, and missed both times.
