Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Terry Wallace has coached Richmond in 97 games.

After this round (Rd 9), Richmond will have been bottom 4 on 50 occasions under Wallace.

44 of those were in 15th or 16th position.

I'm not sure his 100th game in 3 weeks time will be cause for celebration.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Geelong have now won 22 consecutive home and away matches.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

The Bulldogs beat every team at least once from season 2000-2001, despite winning only 22 out of those 45 games.

In 1987, Sydney scored 635 points over three rounds (16-18).

Round nine, 2008 - Brent Harvey 250 games vs Bulldogs
Round nineteen, 2008 - Drew Petrie 150 games vs Bulldogs
Round thirteen, 2007 - Glenn Archer 300 games vs Bulldogs
Round fourteen, 2006 - Watt 100 games, Firrito 50 games vs Bulldogs

Adam Simpson is due to play game 300 when the two sides meet in a few weeks.

Bill James played his first and only game in the 1920 premiership.

Leigh Matthews has polled the third most career Brownlow Medal votes, yet he has failed to win one. Unless he comes out of retirement and takes home Charlie, this record is unlikely to be broken.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Ben Hudson is the oldest current listed player with fewer than 100 AFL games next to his name.

David Cloke polled nine Brownlow Medal votes in his final three games.

Round 20 of 1999 was the last time two victories exceeding 100 points occured in the same round. Sydney defeated Adelaide by 118 points, and Brisbane defeated Fremantle by 114 points.

In that same Brisbane vs Fremantle game, the Lions only won the second half by one point. They led 21.5.131 to 2.6.18 at HT.

Tony Lockett's start to the 1991 was exceptional. Goal tallies of 12, 10 and 12 goals to begin the season saw him with 34 goals after round three. The round eight Coleman Medal leaders this year were all on 27 goals. Later on that season, Lockett's final four games of the season produced goal tallies of 13, 10, 11 and 9 goals.

The closest Lockett would come to kicking three consecutive bags of ten goals again, came in 1996, when he kicked 11, 9 and 10 goals from rounds 9-11.

In 1988, Jason Dunstall kicked a goal in every match to kick 132 goals for the season. He kicked only one goal against Carlton in the SF that year - the only time all season he kicked fewer than three goals in a match.

In 1989, Dunstall kicked 138 goals for the year. Once again, he kicked goals in every game, but kicked one goal only once, against St. Kilda.

Dunstall went 72 consecutive games between 1987 and 1990 kicking at least one goal.

Once again, Dunstall kicked a goal in every match of the 1991 season. Despite his consistency, he only managed 82 goals for the season, failing to kick a bag of 10+.

Dunstall's 145 goals in 1992 produced three bags of twelve and a bag of 17 against Richmond, where he scored a record 243 Dream Team points without tackles included.

In Dunstall's decorated 269 game career, he failed to kick a goal in only fifteen matches.

Garry Lyon is the last player to kick a bag of ten goals in a finals match. He scored ten goals against the Bulldogs in the 1994 SF. His tenth goal came half way through the third quarter.

Gary Ablett SNR is the only player of all five players with 1000 career goals never to kick consecutive bags of ten goals or more.

Lloyd will join him.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

steven king won 3 grand finals out of just 3 games played
2007 vfl grand final
2007 afl grand final
2008 nab cup grand final

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Mark Arceri saved Carlton from that feat all in the same game on a wet day at Western Oval back in the early 90's i think. Kicked a goal with only a couple of minutes left in the match.

But that was in Round 11. I was specifically looking from the start of the season.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Gary Ablett has polled Brownlow votes on every occassion when he has over 30 possesions throughout his career.

He has had over 30 possesions on 5 occasions this year.

Last year when he polled 22 votes, he had over 30 possesions on 7 occassions.

I know where my money is going..

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Melbourne's record over the last 3 years for Rounds 1 to 9.

2 wins, 25 losses

Assuming they lose next week to St Kilda, that's 3 years in a row Melbourne will start 1-9.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Assuming Terry Wallace is staying put:

Round 10 - 500 games as player or coach
Round 12 - 100 games as Richmond coach
Round 14 - 250 games as a coach
Round 18 - 254 games as a coach, 254 games as a player
Round 22 - 258 games as a coach*

* equal to Bill Stephen who currently holds the record for most games coached without making a grand final

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Mick Malthouse won 64.20% of matches as coach of West Coast.

At Footscray, he didn't win half of the games he coached.

And at Collingwood so far, he hasn't won half of the games he has coached.

If Collingwood go 11-11 this year, Mick will have won exactly 50% of games as Collingwood coach*.

* So I predict Collingwood to finish 10-12.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1. Only Geelong and St Kilda have won more 1st quarters this year than West Coast.
2. Essendon have won more 3rd quarters this year than any other team.
3. Only Carlton has won more 4th quarters this year than Melbourne.
4. Geelong has won 9/9 1st halves this year.
5. Adelaide has won 1/9 2nd halves this year.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

1991, 1992 and 1994 were the only years that the VFL/AFL had 24 rounds.

No team lost every Round 23 and Round 24 match they played.

However, Hawthorn and St Kilda are the only sides that won every Round 23 and Round 24 they played.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Allen Jackovich:

- Finished his debut AFL season in 1991 with 71 goals 57 behinds despite only having 1 goal 2 behinds to his name at round 14.

- Kicked 46 goals between his 4th and 9th game.

- Kicked 7 goals+ on 12 occasions with Melbourne from 47 games

- Kicked 18 behinds in the first two rounds of 1994, and only 13 behinds for the remainder of the year.

- Kicked 8 goals in his final game for Melbourne

R3 2007 vs Melbourne (30 possessions) and no votes?

R22 2008 vs West Coast (30 possessions) and no votes?

OK, "more than" 30....technicality!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Max Rooke has only played in roughly 60% of Geelong's wins in the famous streak of 48 from 51 from Round 6 2007. Missing most of the opening part of 2007, his last two defeats are against the same opponent separated by over two years. Round 22 2006, and the Grand Final 2008 are the last two occasions Max Rooke has walked off the ground in the losing team.

It could also be argued that Max was actually Jarrad back in 2006, so last year's Grand Final was his only loss under his current name Max.

Fitzroy defeated Hawthorn by one point on each meeting in 1978, over the eventual premiers no less!

After 90 games as coach, both Mark Thompson and Terry Wallace under the Tigers had almost identical records at their respective clubs. Thompson 39.5 wins and Wallace 35.5. wins in that period of time. Bomber's record since though is a fair bit better!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Please excuse the Geelong-centric nature of these stats. I am a keen GFC fan, but not at the expense of appreciating the game objectively (as the following selection of stats might suggest).

Port melbourne played in 8 consecutive GF's (51-59) and manged to win just one of them.

Geelong are a 50/50 proposition in games decided by 1 point, having won 23 and lost 23.

Geelong are also pretty much a 50/50 proposition in games decided by 1 goal or less, having won 116 and lost 117.

Graham "Polly" Framer had 11 handballs in Geelongs 1963 GF win, exactly 1/4 of the teams total handballs. To put that in a contemporary context, a player would now need approx. 45 handballs in a match to equal Farmers individual to team ratio.

Only three clubs have managed 20 consecutive wins. Essendon once, Brisbane once, and Geelong four times.

No need to be excused.

Ablett's competition high 33 handballs in Rd 4 v Adelaide was just 13% of Geelong's total that day.

For this you do need to be excused. That is some selective stats reporting if ever I saw it. 23 consecutive wins is not really the same as winning 20 consecutive games on four different occasions, now is it?

Oh, crap. Right you are. I was looking at Rogers Results "Stringing together Wins 1897-2008" and i have mis-understood the stat. It did seem too good to be true. Well spotted!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Yes, he has reported them that way, but I don't think his intention was to mislead.

But Geelong do have a second opportunity this year to string together 20 wins.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

No, he didn't intend the stat to used in the way i used it, i have just mis-read him contextually (a wishful mis-reading on my part, perhaps). Anyway, GFC do indeed have a shot at that kind of streak this year. As long as it doesn't end grand final day i will be happy.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Tonight was the first time Carlton and West Coast have played in Melbourne since 2004.

It is also the first time the two teams have met at Docklands.
