Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

The same carnival bonny campbell for WA kicked 25 odd goals v the same qld side. WA and SA both spanked the Queenslanders by 20+ goals from memory, but the Vics decided to let every player kick a goal, late in the game backmen were trying to recieve the ball in the back pocket and form a flying v and run the ball the length of the ground for a goal

According to some sources they say that the backmen or any other scorers were put at full-forward and as soon as they scored they went back and put someone else there to score.

  • St Kilda bettered Essendon's score by a factor of 2 or more in round 14 of 1915 (70 v 31) . The next time was not until round 22, 2008 (147 v 39)

How Long? Last 100 to 700 Wins (VFL/AFL)

  • Geelong has taken 6 fewer seasons than Richmond to amass their last 100 wins and 9 fewer seasons to win their last 200 matches.
  • Essendon has won their last 400 matches in 16 fewer seasons than Melbourne.
  • Hawthorn has won their last 600 matches in 26 fewer seasons than St Kilda.
  • Richmond won their first 200 matches in 109 fewer matches than for their last 200 wins.
  • Both Melbourne and WB/Footscray have needed exactly 1,327 matches each to obtain their last 600 wins.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

  • WB/Footscray has not doubled Geelong's score since 1968.
That case was fascinating because Footscray had won only one of their first eleven games, and Geelong had been on top just three weeks before. It is still Footscray’s biggest win over Geelong, but historically pales in comparison with what Kelvin Templeton and Ian Dunstan did on the same round a decade later against St. Kilda.

Indeed:

  • Footscray had its biggest win against Richmond until 1989 (here for an amazing parallel I have noted ever since 1989) in Round 13 of 1958
  • its biggest win against Geelong (still) in Round 13 of 1968
  • its biggest win against St. Kilda (still) in Round 13 of 1978
It would be hard to find a parallel to that I presume!

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

How Many Times Topped?

  • Hawthorn and Nth. Melbourne have each topped the other 43 times on the final season ladder.

  • West Coast has topped Collingwood 14 times in their 24 seasons. WB/Footscray has topped Collingwood 21 times in 86 seasons.

  • Between 1943 and 1995 Sydney/SM only topped Carlton twice on the final ladder. Since then Carlton has only topped Sydney/SM on 4 occasions.

  • Sydney/SM has topped Carlton on the ladder for 7 consecutive seasons, 2002-08. The previous best was 6, 1897-1902.

  • Geelong topped Collingwood on the ladder in 10 consecutive seasons 1991-2000. Prior to that the best was 3 consecutive on 3 occasions, 1923-5, 1950-2, 1961-3.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

  • Hawthorn did not top Carlton in a season until the 1957 First Semi-Final, and not by points in a home-and-away season until 1958
  • Hawthorn did not top Richmond in a season until 1956
  • Since 1956, Hawthorn has topped Richmond in 37 of 55 seasons (67 percent), including 14 in a row from 1981 to 1994
  • Melbourne did not top Carlton in a home-and-away season from 1965 to 1988, not Hawthorn from 1968 to 1989 (shows what a gerrymander country zoning was)
  • St. Kilda did not top Essendon in a season from 1940 to 1962
  • South Melbourne topped Carlton only three times post-finals from 1937 to 1995;
    1. 1942 (by percentage only)
    2. 1977 (only after the last round)
    3. 1989 (only by a single place)

Consecutive Matches Won
Leading at Each Break - Lost Trailing Each Break 1897- 2010

  • In 2010 Geelong became the first team to have streaks of 5 or more matches which were won leading at each quarter break in 4 consecutive seasons.

  • Richmond last won 5 consecutive matches in this fashion in 1980.

  • Melbourne in 1962.

  • Sydney/SM in 1934.

  • St Kilda lost their first 27 matches in the VFL trailing at each break,

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Yeah, decided it would be easier to have restrictions. There are so many players who would have kicked 5 goals on debut, and thus possessed an average of 5.00 at that stage of their career. I couldn't be bothered researching all of them. Many of these players would still have had pretty good averages after their second game as well, maybe even their third, fourth or fifth (remember Adrian McAdam's first three games?).

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

On September 11, 1982, during the second week of the finals, three players registered their 100th goal of the season. Malcolm Blight kicked 5 goals for North Melbourne against Hawthorn in the 1st Semi to go to 103 for the season, a total upon which he finished as North Melbourne lost and were bundled out of the finals.

Ross Ditchburn kicked 4 goals for Carlton against Richmond in the 2nd Semi to go to 102 for the season, 58 in the seniors and 44 in the reserves. Ditchburn finished with 105 goals for the season (61 seniors, 44 reserves).

Mark Scott, playing for St. Kilda Reserves, kicked 5 goals against Geelong Reserves in the 2nd Semi to go to 102 goals for the season (45 seniors, 57 reserves). Scott finished with 109 for the season (45 seniors, 64 reserves).

Not sure how many combined totals there have been in VFL/AFL history, but the highest one I know of is 131 by Allen Jakovich for Melbourne in 1991 (71 seniors, 60 reserves).

Then again, you can look at Peter Hudson in 1970, when he kicked 146 goals in home and away, 8 goals in night series games and 10 goals in state games, a total of 164 goals in senior football.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

After previous discussion about the biggest score ever I reckon the game mentioned on the front page of this paper was halfway there when the losing side did a runner.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19800519&printsec=frontpage

33.12 to 0.0 at half time!

Incidentally it seems Google News Archive will now let you browse by date (hoorah!) but that heaps of papers that used to be there have been removed (boo!) and the year I'm currently looking through (1980) has most of the Monday papers removed which takes out all the footy match reports.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Here's another match that was heading for a massive score when abandoned.

http://news.google.com.au/newspapers?id=MSBVAAAAIBAJ&sjid=L5QDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3350,2841632

Moorabbin Under 19's 372 points in front of Yarraville in the last quarter when player knocks umpire out and kicks/headbutts boundary umpire. Banned for life as a 16 year old.
That is amazing!

Since it occurred on the same day as the amazing Fitzroy win over North Melbourne, I would have had a lot of opportunity to look in The Age for details, but I do not recall any from my numerous looks at June 20, 1983 (or The Sun, or The Herald of June 18, 1983).

If the match was to be abandoned, the incident would have to have been far more serious than merely one player kicking or head-butting a boundary umpire - appalling as that is! There was of course a VFA section near the VFL one, but it says nothing about the incident.

One thing I did know about from the 1980s VFA, Supermercado, was that a Brunswick Reserves player was suspended for urinating in the goal square during a game! Do you know the exact date of that incident and was it reported in the papers?

I only started looking from '81 on (researching the Barassi as Melbourne coach era) but if I find anything on that I'll send a link.

Better out than in.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

Hope this stat has not been displayed yet.

What would be the record for the most goals kicked by a player against one team in a season?

Peter McKenna kicked 32 against Carlton in 1970 from four games (two home and away, two finals). I have a feeling that certain Big Footy members will be able to search and scour their databases and compile a list faster than I could.

Re: Post 5 random (obscure) stats

There appears to be something unlucky about premierships won in the year 1999. Of the five major leagues around Australia (AFL, VFL, TAC Cup SANFL and WAFL), only one 1999 Premier, WAFL team the West Perth Falcons, has played in a Grand Final since then, winning in 2003 and losing in 2002.

All of the others - AFL North Melbourne Kangaroos (AFL), VFL Springvale Scorpions(now Casey) , TAC team Prahran Dragons (now Sandringham) and SANFL Port Adelaide Magpies have failed to make it to the last day of the season in over a decade since then.

What makes it all the more strange is that three of these teams were very dominant around this time; North won in 1996 & 1999 and were runner up in 1998; the Scorpions won the 1995, 1996, 1998 & 1999 flags and the Port Adelaide Magpies played in every Grand Final in the 1990s except 1991 & 1993, winning 7 and losing on 1 in 1997.
