Not really a stat but when the Lions won their 3 flags ( 2001 - 2003 ) they NEVER finished on top of the ladder after the home and away season. I think they are the only club to do this aswell.

That is an amazing and most definitely unique observation! It is hard to find more than a handful of previous cases in one of those league alone of a team winning a premiership and then failing to play in a Grand Final for a decade before. With the AFL we have in reverse chronological order:

Adelaide: won in 1998 but have not played a Grand Final since
Hawthorn: won in 1991 but did not play a Grand Final in the next sixteen years
- (of course here removal of the country zoning gerrymander is a clear explanation)
Melbourne: won in 1964 but next played a Grand Final in 1988
- (again, country zoning gerrymander key explanation)
Fitzroy: won in 1944 but never played a Grand Final again
Melbourne: won in 1926 but next played a Grand Final in 1939
Essendon: won in 1924 but next played a Grand Final in 1941
Fitzroy: won in 1922 but next played a Grand Final in 1944
South Melbourne: won in 1918 but next played a Grand Final in 1933

In the SANFL, there are only four similar notable cases:

North Adelaide: won in 1991 but did not play another Grand Final until 2007
West Adelaide: won in 1961 but did not play another Grand Final until 1983
West Torrens: won in 1953 but never played another Grand Final before merging with Woodville in 1990
Glenelg: won in 1934 (their first finals series), but did not play another Grand Final until 1950 (and that’s actually only twelve seasons because of World War II)

In the WAFL, we have:

Swan Districts: won in 1990, but played no further Grand Finals until 2008
East Perth: won in 1978 but played no further Grand Finals until 1996
West Perth: won in 1975, but played no further Grand Finals until 1993
- Subiaco won in 1973, but played no further Grand Finals until 1985
  - Any of the 1999 premiers that does not play this year’s Grand Final will equal their feat
- Perth won in 1955, but played no Grand Final in the following decade. All 1999 premiers have thus beaten them
East Perth won in 1936, but excluding the wartime under-age competition did not play a Grand Final until 1956 (sixteen seasons out of Grand Finals)

I think you'd need to update your Melbourne stat there.

Won the 1964 GF and then didn't play in the Grand Final again until 1988, a 24 year gap.

The Chris Connolly stat is among the most surprising I've seen.

Connolly's first win was the day he was caretaker coach for Peter Schwab at Hawthorn, IIRC. Ben Dixon kicked a goal after the siren to win the game.

Freo then rattled off 9 wins in a row against the Blues, which just so happened to be Carlton at their worst.

It’s notable how few there are outside of the early years of Hawthorn and North Melbourne - who were clearly much too poor to be viable in the VFL of the 1920s especially with Carlton and Richmond having so many wealthy patrons. One would think there would be a great many against St. Kilda from Hawthorn and Essendon in the 1980s or against Melbourne from Carlton in a slightly earlier period, but none are to be noticed.

There are competing tensions at play - success breeds longevity and more chance for relative club strengths to change and produce a loss; mediocrity and defeats result in a shorter career.

Found it interesting that the players list contains a number of greats, while the coaches list is relatively nondescript.

Speaking of coaching cameos, how about Bernie Massey at Melbourne. Sure it was only a night game but he filled in for Ian Ridley once in the 1971 final against Fitzroy and won the flag.

First players to play against every team.

Just an interesting stat...if Chris Judd, Brock McLean, Lachlan Henderson, Robbie Warnock and Heath Scotland play in the round 2 clash against Gold Coast, they will be the first players to have played against every team that is currently in the AFL.

That's an interesting statistic; it got me thinking, are there any players who after playing the Gold Coast this year, will have played against every team including Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears?

I couldn't find any. Very few players remain from when Fitzroy and the Bears were in the AFL for the last time in 1996, and Dustin Fletcher (Essendon) and Brent Harvey (North Melbourne) are one club players, with Harvey never playing Fitzroy or the Brisbane Bears anyway. Daniel Bradshaw is actually the last Brisbane Bear still playing (no Fitzroy players remain), so this disqualifies him too. Is there anyone I might have overlooked, who played against Fitzroy, the Bears and this year may play against the Gold Coast?

Heres a challenge, which player has played in the most team match ups. eg judd has played 15 different ones for the eagles and another 14 for carlton (he already played wce v carl at wce).

Im guessing a pike, flethcher kickett with early 50's

The only way it could happen was if Dustin Fletcher played against the Gold Coast this year; then, at season's end leaves the Bombers and has a final season for another club feeling he has another season left in him, and plays against both Essendon and West Sydney for his new team.

That will leave him having played every team except University.
