Geelong are 0-5 in finals outside of Melbourne
4 of those teams won the premiership (Essendon '97, Adelaide '97, port Adelaide '04, Sydney '05) and the other won had their best result ever (Fremantle '13)

Geelong's first win over Sth Melb/Syd in a final last night.

Maybe it could be a year of records breaking, the Tigers smashed the Geelong hoodoo last week, and Geelong will need to overcome an interstate finals duck and also beating the Crows in September to advance to the GF.

Preliminary Final Matchups
(similar to https://afltables.com/afl/teams/allteams/grandfinals.html#06a)

Under a final 8 system, 1st has always made the preliminary final.
Under the final 8 system since 2000, 1st and 2nd have always made the preliminary final.
The top 2 teams have met 10 times in the PF, yet 1st has only hosted 5 of those times.
Under the original final 8 system, not once did the top 4 all make the PF.
Under the revised final 8 system, 13 times in 18 years did the top 4 all make the PF.

In 2016 in the NEAFL, the UWS Giants finished as premiers by beating the Sydney Swans in the Grand Final, while the Brisbane Lions finished last.

Fast forward 12 months, and the Brisbane Lions defeat the Sydney Swans in the 2017 NEAFL Grand Final to finish premiers, while the UWS Giants slide from premiers to last in one season.

Adelaide and Richmond, who both play in Preliminary Finals this weekend, currently have the longest Grand Final droughts in the AFL.

Richmond has not appeared in a Grand Final since 1982, while Adelaide is next longest not appearing in one since 1998.

If both are successful this week, the longest drought will be shared by Carlton and North Melbourne - no Grand Final appearance for either since they met in 1999.

This Friday's match will be the 11th time a Victorian team has traveled interstate for a Preliminary Final.

On the previous 10 occasions, the Victorian team has lost 8 times:

1994 - Melbourne lost to West Coast
1996 - Essendon lost to Sydney
2001 - Richmond lost to Brisbane
2004 - St.Kilda lost to Port Adelaide
2007 - North Melbourne lost to Port Adelaide
2012 - Collingwood lost to Sydney
2014 - North Melbourne lost to Sydney
2015 - North Melbourne lost to West Coast

However, the 2 wins have come in the last 2 years:

2015 - Hawthorn d Fremantle
2016 - Western Bulldogs d GWS

Also, Geelong has never played a Preliminary Final interstate, and Adelaide has only hosted a Preliminary Final once before - in 2006 when it lost to West Coast.

This Saturday's match will be the 16th time a non-Victorian team has traveled to Victoria for a Preliminary Final.

On the previous 15 occasions, the non-Victorian team has lost 9 times:

1990 - West Coast lost to Essendon
1993 - Adelaide lost to Essendon
1996 - Brisbane lost to North Melbourne
1999 - Brisbane lost to North Melbourne
2002 - Adelaide lost to Collingwood
2003 - Port Adelaide lost to Collingwood
2011 - West Coast lost to Geelong
2012 - Adelaide lost to Hawthorn
2014 - Port Adelaide lost to Hawthorn

And the non-Victorian team has won 6 times:

1991 - West Coast d Geelong
1997 - Adelaide d Western Bulldogs
1998 - Adelaide d Western Bulldogs
2004 - Brisbane d Geelong (this should have been a Brisbane home final)
2005 - Sydney d St.Kilda
2016 - Sydney d Geelong

Also, Richmond has never beaten a non-Victorian team in a Preliminary Final, and GWS has never played a Preliminary Final interstate.

I think you're missing quite a few matches.
eg. Sydney played 4 finals at the MCG in 1986/87.
WCE played 5 finals at Waverley in 1988/90.
Essendon played in Brisbane in 1996.

EDIT: my bad, first line of previous post clearly states preliminary finals.

The wooden spoon team of 1980 season were the 4th highest scoring team of that season.

The Roys of that era had a potent attack but an appalling defense.

There's actually an even stranger anomaly still with regards 1980.

It's the only season in the competition's history where both the teams finishing first & second failed to reach the Grand Final.....Has never happened before nor since.....And can't happen this year either.

Wow!!!
We were robbed at Kardinia Park, that is why.

Going out in straight sets by 7 & 8 goal margins respectively, suggests otherwise....At least the cats bowed out with less than a goal margin in the Preliminary Final.....Ouch.

I was talking about being robbed of top spot by the dodgy shit that went on at Kardinia Park that saw them win by 5 points.
We should have been top of ladder and had the first week off. There was no Perovic, Keogh and Jimmy Buckley in week one final. Maybe a well earned week off is all we needed to refresh and re-load,
That actually changes the whole dynamics if had week off as we should have as we saw last year for Dogs when they got back a few players at perfect time.

Having said that it was not meant to be as it turned out. Season was cursed from start for things to go wrong.

Yeah.....What goes around comes around.

Kernahan kicking that goal after the siren in round 22, of 1987, against the Roos out at waverley, was basically what decided the premiership that season.
