From wooden spoon to finals:

North Adelaide in 2018 finished 5th and have so far made it into the preliminary
North just made it into the Grand Final, coming from 47 points down (I think it was) early in the 3rd quarter, to win by 5 points!

Hold on a second

red+black have any FINALS ever been overturned after the fact in any of the major leagues like the Fremantle/St Kilda game a few years back?

Amazing story, this one! I watched the whole game but didn't know about this controversy until a few minutes ago. North's comeback win was just fantastic, but there has to be a fair bit of doubt about the result now! I still can't imagine the SANFL would be prepared to overturn the result, but we'll see!!

The signs of Melbourne making the 2018 Grand Final are good when you consider the results in the state leagues.

With the exception of the NEAFL where there isn't a red and blue team, in each of the major state leagues a red and blue team has made the Grand Final to be played next weekend.

Casey Demons will play the Box Hill Hawks in the VFL; Oakleigh Chargers play Dandenong Southern Stingrays in the TAC Cup; Norwood Redlegs are playing North Adelaide in the SANFL Grand Final; and in the WAFL Grand Final the West Perth Falcons will play Subiaco.

Well the AFL looks set to smash the attendance record for the finals series:

https://afltables.com/afl/crowds/summary.html

Even with the double grand final in 2010 due to the draw which resulted in an extra game there was only a total finals attendance of 650,000, this may be the first season to get over 700,000 attendants to finals.

But the average attendance should be about 77,000 per game which is the largest since 1981, the last true year of the VFL before South Melbourne moved to Sydney is 1982.

This weekend should see:
- the 1st or 2nd largest Friday night preliminary final ever,
- the 2nd or 3rd largest aggregate attendance for a preliminary final weekend

Large preliminary final crowds:
- 108215 (1970), 107279 (1969), 103649 (1968), 102494 (1971)
- 99203 (1962), 98652 (1973), 98002 (2007), 96272 (1972)

As you can see from the table, the AFL policy on which team plays their PF first is not set in stone. More recently though, the highest winning QF team has played on the Friday, although that was not the case in 2012.
1994-96, 1999-2000, 2002, 2005-06, 2012: Highest winning QF team did not play their prelim first
2004: Brisbane played their home PF at the MCG due to policy at the time (when did this end?)
2008-09: only instances of Friday night and Saturday night prelims

and in the TSL North Hobart won the wooden spoon :p

red+black - As you seem to have the full details of sanfl/wafl/vfl/afl, I was wondering if you could tell me which teams have gone from

wooden spoon to Premiers

and/or

wooden spoon to finals.

For the WAFL:

Swan Districts 1960 and 1961
Claremont 1963 and 1964
South Fremantle 1969 and 1970

From wooden spoon to finals:

South Fremantle in 1905 finished 4th on the ladder, then lost 2nd semi
Perth in 1913 finished 3rd then finished runner up
Subiaco in 1917 finished 4th then lost 2nd semi
West Perth in 1925 finished 2nd then lost 1st semi
South Fremantle in 1945, after a winless season, finished 3rd then finished runner up
South Fremantle in 1962 finished 3rd then lost 1st semi
South Fremantle in 1967 finished 3rd then lost the preliminary
Subiaco in 1968 finished 4th then lost 1st semi

The dream lives.
I don't know if the pre-finals bye is the sole reason but I think we should expect more top 4 teams to lose in straight sets and more 5-8 teams make the prelim. I think that's great for football. There's no real reason why any team can't win 4 games in September, the Bulldogs proved that in 2016.

I’m talking about north Adelaide from 5th

Has any team ever had 5 teams in a finals series?

North has beaten south, Sturt, woodville* and the sanfl* at tribunal so far!
Come on down norwood

At three stages during 1992, Tony Lockett and Jason Dunstall had the same number of career goals at the end of a round.

At the end of round 14, both had 733 goals (Lockett 152 games, Dunstall 158)
At the end of round 17, both had 748 goals (Lockett 155 games, Dunstall 161)
At the end of round 22, both had 775 goals (Lockett 160 games, Dunstall 166)

Not before or after did they have the same number of career goals at the end of any round.

1901, 1999 and 2018 are the only finals series I can find where minor premier fails to make grand final after one finals loss. Given traditional final five and final four systems had double chance to reach grand final 1931 to 1993 was not even possible as you had to be beaten twice not to make it. Before 1931 most years minor premier had right of challenge if lost a final so also effectively double chance. 1901 for some reason did not and Cats top of ladder lost one final and not in grand final.
